OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!That site made me cry.We definately need to help these animals.
meow, meow... :-[ that's eat I'm opening a kittie zoo!
okay...okay....fine....I'll go in next week and adopt the guy they showed in the clips.
This is no laughing matter.Animal homelessness is a big epidemic.
Some anecdotes re: pet adoption. Where I live, farmers often gun down abandoned dogs and cats because they pose a threat of disease and death to livestock. And if the farmers don't put them down, the coyotes will get them instead. While this sounds cruel, I got to see the nighmare alternative when I lived on Puerto Rico: due to circumstances unique to the island, stray dogs suffered and died horrible deaths due to neglect and starvation. The "sato"s were walking dog skeletons, occasionally with bloody mange.
This is why Americans euthanize unwanted animals. Unpleasant, but consider the alternative.
My dog is a beautiful Rott/German Shepherd mix. Our cat is a Siamese mix. Yes, you can find beautiful pets for free, you don't have to spend a thousand dollars on an AKC animal. My cousin bought a Persian cat, and the cat has many medical problems due to inbreeding. She has spent more in vet bills than what she paid outright for the cat.
If you cannot have a pet, there are other ways to support animal rescue. Donate to the SPCA. Send FTD flowers to your local county shelter, or donate supplies, or your time. Even county animal control has tough times dealing with the workload posed by the number of unwanteds.
And spay or neuter your pet. Many cities have charity funds to help with the cost of the operation. And no, the operation does not "mentally scar" the pet- my dog still humps my leg merrily. The cat still behaves like a cat (fur doorstop.)
I own a bunny. I previously adopted one from an agency. The place f***d me over in a major way, see my thread "banned" in LO. I am not in any way shape or form criticizing this thread starter, or adoption. All I'm sayin here is be careful, if they offer to "sit" your pet while you're away. You might not get it back, as what happened to me. I'm a very strong supporter of banning horseslaughter, which is now taking place in my state.
:crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:
omg...
my dog is right here by my feet...and I just couldn't help but cry. That was really sad....but its reality...
I'm going to the pound this week with my cousin, she wants to get a dog. Don't be surprised if I'm on the news for adopting the whole shelter!!
heh...i wish...
I am a life long lover of animals and my husband is a Vet who specializes in exotic animals. We have a rescue shelter of sorts on our property which remain at full capacity pretty much everyday so obviously we are big time supporters of animal adoption. I can't fathom buying a typical household pet such as a dog or cat when there are so many wonderful animals awaiting adoption. I can't stress how difficult it is to turn away animals from our shelter knowing where they will likely end up. It's a difficult thing to turn away those scared little eyes but to keep up with the quality of life for all the animals we care for it has to be done, sigh -- When my daughter gets old enough to help care for the critters we will probably build another small shelter on our land but I fear that no matter how many we build and tend to that we will always end up having to turn some away. :'(
This is such a good thread, KittenKat!
I have always adopted my animals from shelters, with the exception of the animals that neighborhood kids have brought to me. They always know who will take strays & abandoned animals in.. lol
I have a BIG problem with pet stores who sell cats & dogs. Most of them do not come from reputable breeders but, PUPPY MILLS. The store owners buy these animals in "bulk" from backyard breeders and puppy mills. They don't care where they come from, as long as their cages are stocked and the money is rolling in.
Always save a life and adopt a shelter animal.
The guy that started the organization that made the video is a hottie, too. ;D
He's a beautiful man inside and out!
I ran into his site when I was doing research about trapping and maintaining feral cat colonies. I sent him an e-mail and he offered me some good advice and words of encouragement.
I've been involved in rescue for over 10 years now- now I personally have 7 cats and 3 dogs, all who were considered "unadoptable" in one way or another, so they've stayed with me.
another wonderful site and my very favorite shelter:
http://bestfriends.org
I worked at an animal shelter, and I'm not against euthanesia- I'd rather be put to sleep than suffer and starve to death. I'd like the get the word out on animal adoption- and spaying and neutering. I'd like to dream that one day, animals won't have to get put to sleep for the lack of a loving home!
The pics in the video are mostly Michael's personal pics from his feral cat colony that he manages.
I'm sorry about your situation, whirlerz.
Which organization did you adopt from? What was the reason behind the foster mom not returning your bunny?
I thought the video was a little over the top, but I am definitely for the cause.
There are two problems with regards to unwanted pets right now:
#1, not enough people are adopting pets who need homes right now, and by doing so they continue to put money in the pocket of "purebred" Puppy/kitty farms who churn out animals at an unhealthy rate.
#2, there needs to be tighter regulations on spaying and neutering animals...in my area which is rural, there are a lot of stray dogs and cats especially and the local agencies are focusing more on the spaying and neutering aspect, rather than adoption because it's easier to control with more of a long term solution to the problem.
I thought I had posted this here? Hmm, it must have been on the fitness site then. But yes, that site makes me cry and I am guilty of having bought an expensive dog instead of saving one. However, I will never do that again. My next dog will be from a shelter because I will know that I rescued it and will give it a great home. (But thats not soon cause I have 4 right now) lol
Why do you think it was over the top? :( I think these kinds of videos always shock people and show them reality. (and those pics werent nearly as bad as some of the things these poor animals go through)Quote:

A few years ago, I wanted to volunteer at a Pet Shelter, and I cried the whole time there, that I didnt go back. I saw a Chow who had cigarette burns, a bulldog with a missing eye. I knew that if I worked there, I'd wanna take a bunch of them home with me (not possible) OR that I would see them be put to sleep. So I knew that I couldnt handle it emotionally. :(
Another thing, that guy IS a hottie. What a good person.
LOL Lexi.. You remind me of one of my best friends. She has 4 dogs. Her mother once bred daschaunds (sp), so she took the mommy and one of her babies. Eventually the mom passed on, so she got a black lab from her mother, who was breeding them at that point. Then, she got a "mate" for the lab from another reputable breeder. So, she was up to 3. She was in Petsmart one day getting food for her babies, when a lady was walking around with a dalmation/terrier mix. This poor little thing was deaf AND blind. The lady explained to her that she had been there for the adopt-a-pet day that they had there. No one wanted this little sweetheart. So.. What did my friend do? Yep, she took her home.. lol
That was about 3 years ago. You would never know that this dog was deaf and blind. She is my favorite of the four dogs of course, just because she doesn't let a thing bother her, especially her impairments.
So she has 2 labs, Dakota and Luke, her daschaund, Zeus, and the dalmation mix, Summer.
My friend also had her tubes tied a couple years back, because she considers her dogs her "children", and the only ones she'll ever want. She's incredibly dedicated to them.
Oh my god Rhiannon! Thats how it happened.
My mom's chihuahua had puppies (and I kept benji. I had a soft spot for him because he was totally black but he had two front paws that were white. They looked like white leg warmers) So I kept him. (also because I had to hand feed them after a few weeks because she had so many and they were literally taking out all of her nutrients so she had seizures. ) Next litter came along and the same thing happened. So I had to hand feed them and got attached AGAIN. I kept Yeya. I had tried to give her to a friend, but his Shar-Pei almost ate her, so he gave her back. Then Turbo is technically by bf's dog, but since we are on and off, hes not technically mine. And then Ivy. I got her in a store because she was so cute and had green eyes like me and kept licking my face. ;)
She was an "unplanned" one, but I love her. I love them all.
:)
Awww, the world needs more pet lovers like you Dahling..
I definitely don't think the video was too over-the-top either. The pictures and stories in the links I posted are much more intense. There are quite a few pictures of actual puppy-mills. The living conditions of these babies is bad enough, but when you actually read the stories of what these animals had to live with daily, you can't help but start to cry.
In a lot of states, it is a requirement before an animal is adopted out, that they are spayed or neutered. Like I mentioned in another thread, Arizona is very very strict about it, as they spayed my 9 week old puppy before I could have her.
Here in Rhode Island, they will make you sign a contract in some places, if the animal is too young. The contract you sign promises that you will have the animal spayed or neutered before they are 6 months old. You are required by law to show them proof. Or, they come looking for you. That happened to a friend of mine. He didn't get it done within the given time, so they took him to court and slapped him with a very hefty fine.
Although that sucked for your friend, I would totally support them neutering/spaying dogs and cats because lots of people have unwanted puppies and kittens.
Prime example, my moms chihuahua! Benji and yeya were lil' accidents. My mother thought the chihuahua was too small for the yorkie. (hes big too) But when a dog (or man) is horny  they will fit it into anything! And so he did.
And I told her!!! But she didnt listen and it happened twice.
So although I love my dogs, I have the two males neutered. I am thinking of getting the girls done too, as I heard they can get cancer if they arent. :( (I waited because they are so small, that i was sfraid they would die on the operating table) We all know that anything that comes to females, it always worse. :( (for benji and turbo, they just snipped their nads and took them out) For Yeya and Ivy, they will have to go through major surgery. Poor babies. :(
I found my baby on www.petfinder.com!! You can find any kind of animal anywhere on that thing, it's awesome!!!!
LOL I'm the same way, Lexi.. When he told me what had happened, I pretty much laughed in his face and said "Told ya so". I am in total support of spaying and neutering. People should leave the breeding of animals to the actual breeders.
Unfortunately females have to go through so much more than males.. Isn't that the way in everything? hahaha.. Men don't realize how easy they have it sometimes.. lol
It's a long story kit. Very sad. To me anyway. You can check it out on "ladies only", thread title, "banned". Been a couple yrs. now. I do have my gurl, who I treasure, & love animals dearly. I think it's great what you're doing. Much sucess to you & all animals.
Tiger, I think what you & hub are doing is great also.
