music help
so we have to do two song sets, and i have songs i like a lot but i dont know what other song to pair them with.
1) my bloody valentine - forever and again
2)joy division - love will tear us apart
3)the kinks - lola
do you know what other songs would be good mates for these three? maybe another song by the same artist?

Re:music help
I've always thought it would be hillarious to see a girl dance to "Lola," considering its subject matter.

Re:music help
oh i know, but ive strip to "rebel, rebel" by david bowie all the time and no one else seems to pay attention to what its about, so im convinced it doesnt matter.
(and my stage name is Lola ;))

Re:music help
95% of the world never concider the meening of songs in a strip bar. Take "Edge of the Worlb" by Faith No More. I've ruined that song for many a dancer when I tell them what its about. And is it me...or is P.Y.T. and keep it in the closet by Mr. Jackson seem extra icky now-a-days?

Re:music help
Nope, the guys aren't listening to the words.
One of my favorite songs of all time, or rather both my favorite versions--since there are several, is "I'm Afraid of Americans", by David Bowie. The ones I like are from the Rusty Nails IV CD, and the influence of Trent Reznor in both remixes is unmistakeable--they are way funkier than the other versions.
But I have heard that one club played this song after 9/11, with the dancers wearing US flag costumes--and the crowd went wild with joy and patriotic fervor. If they had really listened to the lyrics they would have strung up the DJ by his thumbs, shot the dancers, and burned down the bar.
I played it myself but knew noone would pick up on the not-so-hidden meaning, even when he sings "Johnny wants a brain, Johnny wants to suck on a c*ck...".
I was hesitant to play another of my favorites in the months immediately after 9/11--"America Number One", by those commie rockers, Consolidated, but the song is too damned good to resist, so I wound up playing it eventually. Commies or not, lyrics be damned--the song is that good.
There I sat, rigid with tension, waiting for an angry mob to rise up, storm the DJ booth, and tear me into bloody shreds. Or for my boss, pathetic geek that he was, to stick his head in--his lips trembling characteristically with barely suppressed rage--to tell me that the customers were freaking out and I was finally fired.
Noone said a word, they loved it, even when the guy clearly says--
"There is no America...there is no democracy...there is only...
...IBM, and ITT, and ATT, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon..."
All they heard was the chanting, over and over again: "America Number One!", and that killer bass line, which is as heavy as you can get.
That's one of the songs that used to especially freak out my boss, the geek--by actually causing vibrations in his office (which was located right next to one of the two biggest speakers in the club)--God forbid!
My explanation that it was a nightclub and that some slight vibration from music, right next to the speaker, might be expected, did not go over well. Nor did the customers constantly begging me to turn it up.
But again I digress, and the topic has been left in tatters. So...
Try "Destroyer", by The Kinks
My favorite Kinks song is "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman", but it really sounds nothing at all like "Lola", which I have played several times, BTW.

Djoser just checking out your history in this forum. You sound wise and well schooled in SC DJing. I seem to agree with your general philosophy. But your post about 9/11 made me think of my most embarassing musical decision. That very evening I played a tune that I'd always played for a rocker girl from up north. It started playing and the irony didn't hit me until the chorus:
"I feel safe in New York City..." by AC/DC :o
I can laugh and play off most gaffes but that one was too much for me.
