Speaking of books - all time favorite?
My favorite is Papillon. Story about a French thief who was framed and put in jail for something he did not do. Because of that, he spent a great deal of time attempting to escape "inescapable" prisons. He said he would have gladly served his time for something he'd actually done.

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?
Lord of the Rings (It was intended by it's author to be one single novel, and was only split into three due to a paper shortage, Tolkien actually fought the split). First book i ever read, and it's still my ATF.
Second favorite would be Neuromancer, by William Gibson.

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?
Hrm...
I need to ponder this some more, but if pressed for an answer right now, I guess I'd say:
The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner. As I Lay Dying is up there too.
But then there's the sci-fi/fantasy side with the following:
Childhood's End
A Canticle for Leibowitz
The Left Hand of Darkness
Dune
LotR
At the Mountains of Madness
Bah, I can't decide. Don't even ask me about movies - I have 100 favorite movies and they change daily.

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?
It took a while, but I asked myself, "Which book do I keep loaning out to friends, buying again, loaning out,,,,,"
The answer is "The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay
.
This story is a great book about a young English boy growing up in a South Africa with racial discrimination. The boy, Peekay is discriminated against for being English by the Boers (Dutch), but is still strong and due to his genuis and boxing skills and strength comes to lead all the tribes of Africa. "First with the head and then with the heart, that's how a man stays ahead from the start." Hoppie Groenewald, advise that Peekay will carry with him through his life.
A great book, relative to Post Colonial Literature where you are able to see the effects of the colonization of Africa. The book is humurous and easy to read, extremely enjoyable for all. It is a story of a young boys dream to rise above discrimination and to fight for racial equality

Stephen King's "IT" and "The Stand"
Gotta love his books...
And The Shining - I read that when I was 9 - I think it came out in 1980. I remember this because i asked my mom several times what some words mean, including the C word (as in nickle-plated [email protected]#$). :o
Heh. My mom just told me I probably shouldn't be reading that book. I shrugged and just kept reading. Gotta admire her for fostering that literary love.
I also love Peter Straub's stuff. And Clive Barker - I don't think I've read anything like Weaveworld. But his absolute best stuff is his short stories a la Books of Blood.

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?
Books that didn't send me to sleep and was eager to read the next page..
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Interview with a Vampire and all the other books in the Vampire series by Anne Rice except Memnoch The Devil as it took me too long to get thru it compared with all the other books.
The Stand by Stephen King
Rich Dad, Poor Dad
The Spiral Dance by Starhawk
The Son of Sam.. um.. don't know the author.. it was about the killings in New York.. I was going thru my demonolgy phase and happened upon this book.
These are the only books I can think of right now... hence these books MUST have made an impression with me.

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?
Roots-Alex Haley.I probably read that 10 years ago.I just remember wanting to come home from work to read more and find out what happened.

Re:Speaking of books - all time favorite?
Memnoch - Anne Rice
The vampire series by Anne Rice, ate that up like mad when they first hit the stands, I occasionally reread my faves over n over.
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden, oh my what a great read and dip into another culture, I highly recommend this read.
I loved the biography written on Aerosmith - cant remember the name but a great book good read and incredibly interesting.
I liked the one on Jim Morrison - of the Doors, too; "no one gets out of here alive" I think it was called.
In between this kinda stuff I am always brushing up on books with personal insights, creativity, spirituality(not 'god' persay no but personal enlightenment type stuff), self improvement, psychology, etc.

No one here gets out alive, Danny Sugarman. I've read that. When he was a kid he used to hang with Jim. Good book.
