collecting funds for a family in need
Hi all. there is a family here in my town that has hit financial hardship. I am setting up my paypal account to collect some much needed funds for them so that they do not end up homeless or get their utilities shut off. If you can donate any amount at all that would be really really great. this is a family that attends school with our youngest daughter and they are a really deserving group of people.
let me know and here is the paypal account that can be directly deposited and sent to the family.
thank you in advance!!
[email protected] is my paypal account address!
hope you can help! it will really make a difference!
peace
ember

Ummmm...not to be rude...but is there an article about this or some other way to help? Most people are leary of sending money for something like this with no back-up information...just a heads up.

Re:collecting funds for a family in need
sounds too much like a sham and I am quite generous when inspired. You really need to be more clear on this.
Re:collecting funds for a family in need
I think a great idea is to make this known public in your area, via newspaper, and maybe a tv station.
The family could set up funding for needs with a local bank.
That is how it works around here. I don't know what happened to them, but i hope it's not very serious and they do fine in the end.
Good luck,
Pamela
Re:collecting funds for a family in need
thanks for the hints. I was just trying to help them out. they are friends of my daughter and not sure they really want their situation made public in the paper. but no worries. I will just try and get them some money other ways

How in the heck did you dig this up? Where did you find this?
I would be completely willing to help, although, with the little bit of information given I would not send any money. Maybe if there was a drive going on, I would give if I knew the money was going to the family. I've just seen too many scams where someone did something like this and no one ever found the "family" in need...where as the person who collected the money was laughing all the way to the bank (not implying anything about you, but still).

Embers-
While your cause may indeed be 'for real' and a noble cause, unfortunately there has been so much internet fraud and scams of similar style that people are natually going to be a bit stand-offish unless there is more detailed information.
There have been 1000's of scams, ranging from some little girl in India that needs airfare to the USA and medical treatment, to a number of other children and family related charities from which there was no such thing. Just someone with a PayPal sapping $$ from people trying to do the right thing.
It's a shame that the few losers in this world ruin things for the truly in need... but it's unfortunately a trend. When a dollar goes into an internet donation fund, chances are almost always in favor of it being a scam. This makes it so those that truly need help MUST provide some form of tangible, traceable information- usually in the form of local attention, newspaper articles or similar.
Re:collecting funds for a family in need
I agree whole-heartedly with everything that's been said here. You need documentation, articles, even letters in order to collect donations. I know your heart is in the right place, Embers, but as it was already mentioned, a few bad apples have spoiled the whole bunch, so to speak.
About 6 or 7 years back, a major scam went on in an AOL chatroom that I frequented. A regular chatter who we had all liked, claimed he had terminal cancer, and could not afford treatment (to prolong his life, and keep him comfortable for the remainder of it). We were all very sympathetic, and spoke to his "son", who was also a regular of the room. His "son" had set up a PO Box where we could all donate money for his father's treatment. I didn't send much, compared to everyone else. A few months later, his "son" came into the chatroom and notified us all that his father had passed away. So, a lot of the others also sent money to cover the costs of the funeral and burial.
I forget now how we all found out about it, I think another regular was in on the whole thing, but the son turned out to be the "father", and he was living it up with the $20,000+ he had scammed the chatroom (and another chatroom) out of. Pretty shitty, wasn't it?
My mother who has Multiple Sclerosis, also collects donations for the annual holiday party that they hold in December. She's required to have a letter to send to each donator, as well as a identification card for her home health aide, who goes around collecting the donations. This is all to prove that they are legit.
Again though, I'm confident that your heart is in the right place, and while I'm sure you're legit, some sort of "proof" is required with things like this.
I wish you luck with this though hon.
Re:collecting funds for a family in need
I think it's very noble that you are wanting to do this. Myself, I try to give/recycle clothing, household goods, etc. right now, I just helped out a friend, she has severe medical problems, & had extensive surgery. Best of luck to them, & you.
Re:collecting funds for a family in need
Embers it just makes it harder for people in your area to help this family if the public dos not know. What about setting up a charity booth, huge yard sale etc.
Good luck,
Pamela
