However, since funds are basically a basket full of different stocks or bonds selected by the fund's manager, funds are bound to be holding some losers as well as some winners. I usually take the time to research likely winners and buy these stocks directly.
It's never too early to start investing ! However, with the presidential election up in the air, it's possible that the American markets may wind up taking a nosedive over the next 2 months. If you do own funds holding US stocks, please be prepared to spot the beginning of any nosedive and sell out before you take too big of a potential loss.
