Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
What do you think, folks? Was this the one predicted for September? I live in S.F. and assumed I would feel something, but nope. Not a tremor over here. Is anyone in SoCal? How are ya? 6.0 is a good size and the last time I felt one like that I was in SoCal in '92. I was 12. :o

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Yeah, I just heard about it. My friend in LA felt the after tremors. Is Mother Nature pms'ing these days or what? Hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes......oh my. :P

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
I guess so. You know how girls will menstrate together after a while... Well, I'm right smack in the middle of mine. Go figure. We must be closer than I thought.... I should call more.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
I fear there will be more. The Northridge was about a decade ago. My science teacher friend says the tectonic plates move a few centimeters each year, so California will eventuallllllly shiver off into the Pacific Ocean.....then some of us normal folk can own some NV and AZ beachfront property. Ha!

We're on the same page mm. I was at the gym whe I learned about the quake. I think there will be more to follow this one. I am just hoping we have a series of small quakes rather than a big one.
On another note..How many of us Cali residents have an emergency earthquake kit ? After hearing about the 6.0 that hit central Ca., I decided to get started on mine. So far I have tons of water, soup, first aid kit and a few other things.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Ya, I felt the rock and roll of the earth. I heard that there was two back to back earthquakes. One was a 5.9 and the other was a 6.0.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
This might sound horribly stupid (hey, I'm a Tucan, don't know nuthin' bout no earthquakes), but does this have anything to do with the Mt. St. Helen's drama going on? ???
-
Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Hardkandee, that's a valid, non-stupid question. Let me ask my teacher friend for some help on researching that and I'll post tommorrow.
We might go hit the sack and do some research on human sexual response first though, rawr........; )

Thinking the same thing.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
I have my kit but not everything I should have. I have a ton of water and a kick-ass first aid kit but no food yet or anything for my puppy. I took the baby wipes (for baths) for work and haven't replaced them... You know how it is ; )

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
I didn't feel anything, but I was sleeping....
-
Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Didn't feel it either, but noticed all the blinds on the windows swaying back and forth.
-
Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Damn it...not NOW. I leave for L.A. in just over 24 hours!!! Argh!
-
Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Hmm. There's another big'in' though not at big as the first. Wonder if it will travel north towards us??

Hey, thanks!!
I hope your study of the human sexual response was successful, there's nothing worse than wasted reasearch time....

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
I'll try to get him to get on here to type a response about "convection", which contributes to earthquakes and volcanic activity. But yeah, as you all know now, the tectonic plates and Mount Saint Helen are up to no good...
We were up to no good too! The earth moved, but we're not in CA! Ha ha.

I totally forgot about food for the puppy and the other animals too. I never even thought about baby wipes either.

Well, I was watching the news this morning and of course they were discussing the recent quakes. The scientist were saying that N. Ca really does have anything to worry about ( for the time being), but So. Ca might get a big quake with in the next week or so.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
I am new to the whole earthquake thing... I have only lived in Orange County for 2 years. What kind of kit should I put together in case of a large quake?
The club I work in is a really old structure! I would end up crushed for sure if I was at work when the big quake takes place. Does anyone have any good survival techniques they could share?
I was lucky and didn't feel the earth move all the way down here in Newport Beach. But I'm really freaked out at the possibility of getting cushed in a big one. :P

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Three kits: one for home, car and work. PLENTY OF WATER!! They say at least 3 gallons per person for 3 days. First aid kits, if you have pets they need their own food and water and first aid kits, blankets, toiletries, money (in case ATMs are out) flashlights, portable raidio, canned/boxed food, one small pan and pot, lighters and or matches, baby wipes (for bathing), a tarp and maybe an extra change of clothes. Oh! Glow sticks and flares are always good. I'm sure there's more but these for sure you would need. Keep it all in a bag somewhere within reach.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
As for surviving through a big quake NEVER RUN OUTSIDE!! Stay away from glass for sure. Get under a sturdy table or in a door frame. Be sure to turn off any gas ASAP. Have some sort of plan on where to meet your family/friends afterwards in case you aren't able to speak with them. Stay put? Meet at home or a place in between.

Re:Finally, The "Big" Earthquake??
Nada. Usually it's easy to confirm a shake as a quake (vs. withdrawls or a drive by RPG-ing) with swinging blinds, lamps, etc.. But I saw and felt zippo. (west la)

No longer recommended. Most homes are equiped with earthquake shut-off valves now. I believe most appartments are as well. Only turn your gas off if you smell gas. Service manpower after a quake will be stretched too thin otherwise. Also check for off the hook phones after a quake. Phone service can support only a limited number of dialtones, and off-hook lines quickly overload the system. This was a big problem in 94. Of course toddlers and dogs are carrying cell phones in LA now so probably no longer a big issue. Cats apparently are disgusted by the trend and have refused.
All you really need is to know someone that has made surviving an apocalypse into a hobby, and go hang out at their house. Believe me you'll find plenty of these in Orange County. We're a bit more carefree north of the Orange Curtain.
