I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
I'm trying to gain like 5-7lbs. I'm 115 right now but I should be around 120-122, that's when i look my best. I've tried everything...fast food...milkshakes...eating after i'm full...donuts...i even try to eat before i go to sleep and i just wake up hungry. I live in the city so I walk a lot, a lot of stairs, it seems like whatever little weight i do gain i loose from just walking around! Some might consider this lucky, but i don't, i want my curves back! What should i do? What should i eat?
I'm sitting here with my best friends dunkin donuts and haggen daz, hope something happens.

add butter to your diet. Use whole milk instead of skim. pile on the sour cream and cheese to that baked potato. try adding a couple protein shakes a day too.

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
You are probably blessed with a high metabolism.
Count your blessings, lol.
One suggestion, do not go crazy with the fast foods, and adding in a ton of junk food to help you gain the weight. My father tried the same method when he was in the Navy, always thinking he was too skinny. He went out on tour at 6'2", 145 lbs, and when he walked off the boat a year later he touched ground at 220 lbs. He has been fighting to take the weight off ever since.
Altering your diet is probably the worst thing you can do. The best suggestion I can offer if you are highly active, is to add in some kind of a high calorie protein shake to your daily intake. Something to up your caloric intake for the day, without forcing high cholesterol, high fat foods into your diet. This will not promote negative side effects like high cholesterol which fast food/junk food can sometimes do.
One other suggestion. If you are eating small meals, all throughout the day, you may want to cut back the number of meals you eat, and up the portion size. many times people highly active, will eat all throughout the day due to time constraints. Which is good for keeping the high metabolism, but if you cut back your meals to 2-3 times a day, your body's metobolism will slow up a bit. Eating small meals throughout the day, cause your body to act as a human furnace, constantly working to break down food, raising your body temp, and keeping less storage.

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
There are healthy ways to gain weight without comparmising you health. Eating junk food can actually rob you body of nutrients and be detrimental to the situation you are trying to counteract. I will cut and paste part of a health plan I designed for a friend with a similar problem. (she had a few allergies so excuse the referances to this).
This doesn’t have to mean eating every 5 minutes but it does mean making more calculated food choices. By adding more nutrient dense foods into your diet you can get extra calories in an effective way that shouldn’t disrupt your lifestyle too much. To gain weight, on average you need to consume an extra 500 calories a day, 3,500 extra calories per week will allow you to gain 1 pound. We are not going to get obsessed with numbers I just wanted to give you an idea of where we are at.
A few good ways to add extra calories in a healthful way without having to gorge yourself:
• Smoke more Mary Jane to bring on the munches LOL just kidding ;)
• Eat more whole grains; brown rice, whole wheat bread, potatoes, yams for some examples. Try to avoid ‘white carbohydrates like white rice, white flour etc as these products do not contain any nutrients and actually take vitamins and minerals out of your body in digestion. The body has to use up more energy to digest them then they actually give back.
• Because you are allergic to diary milk you might want to add some soy milk or rice milk into the diet. Having a glass on its own or in a smoothie would be a good idea.
• Fresh cold pressed oils; flax and hemp would be the first choices but I am unsure if you are allergic to seeds, and in this form? There is a great brand called ‘Udos blend’ that I highly recommend. You can add this to everything; drinks, salads, veggie dishes, seafood and even shakes. It will also supply your body with a great source of essential fatty acids which will help to repair the body, give you energy and also help counteract asthma and allergies. The other option would be to use cold pressed olive oil if you are unable to consume the above.
• Full fat soft cheese such as cottage cheese and quark are great, as well as full fat yoghurt. Because it is already pre-digested by the friendly bacteria more often than not people with milk allergies can consume these products. When purchasing yoghurt buy a plain unsweetened type and be sure that it has ‘live’ or ‘active’ cultures on the label. This way you will be giving your stomach a healthy treat also. Once you are at your ideal weight you can switch to a low fat version.
Nuts are also a great idea, almonds are wonderful. You can make some great nutmilk.
If you would like some more specific ideas FoxyRoxIt feel free to PM me with your current diet/eating habits and I can offer a plan to cater for you as well as some supplements that might help. (It won't cost you anything BTW :))

I'm already pretty toned from years of ballet and gymastics, I was actually looking to gain a bit of fat, i think a lil' fat is sexy.
Also, i forgot to mention that i smoke cigarettes, close to have a pack a day, i don't smoke to control my appetite and i don't substitute meals with cigarettes, but could this still be part of the problem?
Again, thanx for all your help :)

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
My boyfriend's trying to gain weight too. He eats ice cream, cookies and other fatty foods similar to what you're eating. Another thing he does for a meal is eat 2 packs of instant noodles (Ramen nooddles) with an egg and hot dogs. He likes a high carb diet for gaining weight. If you're concerned about eating too much saturated fat you could eat nuts which are high in calories (and their fat isn't as bad as say butter) or you could drink alot of regular soda. Another thing he does is drink Boost (a meal replacement drink from the grocery store) as a snack. One small bottle of Boost has 240 calories and it's healthy and comes with lots of viatmens and minerals.
I think if you drink Weight Gainer (it's a powder you add to water from General Nutrition Stores) you won't have any trouble gaining weight- it's really really high in calories. It upset my bf's stomach though but others drink it with out a problem.

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
Have you tried seeing an MD? You may suffer from overactive tyroid that would make it difficult to gain weight no matter what you ate.
You may also want to see a nutritionalist or dietitian to figure out just what you daily caloric needs are and then add upon that.
I have never suffered with a problem gaining weight, but my husband does have a hard time gaining any weight. He has high calorie protien drinks three times a day and mixes them with fruit juice or ice cream (low fat as he does have high colesterol) for even more calories. Otherwise he eats a clean and natural diet high in lean protiens and lots of whole grains and veggies.
Good luck to you and I wish you luck!

I actually just saw the doc last week and she said everything was in order, I just have a fast metabolism, she said i should be glad. But alas i am not.

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
This may help you gain some weight, but after you gain you have to learn how to keep the weight on while dancing or whatever it is that you do that requires cardio.
This works for some Anorexic patients in hospitals. First eat many small meals a day, anything you like to get you going. Ok, start with a breakfast, eat slow, right after drink Ensure. Snack, drink Ensure, lunch and Ensure. This will fill you up, so learn to eat and drink slow. Of course have water too, but always after a meal. Water alone will take hunger away.
Just be a "grazer" all day, and drink the Ensure. Slow down the cardio, until you gain.
Walking is fine. After you gain (i hope you do) try to up your cardio again, lift weights for muscle, and keep on eating what you like. Ensure will not hurt you, but it's actually made for people who need calories and nutrition together.
Good luck,
Pamela

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
FoxyRoxIt, I notice you are 20. I had the same fast metabolism when I was younger. You may just be skinny as a snake for the next 10 years or so. This probably doesn't seem helpful but you'll appreciate it when you turn 30ish and your body starts changing even though your eating habits haven't. What I mean is, the girls whose curves you envy now will have expanded to the size of Alaska while you will finally have the curves you dreamed of. ;)

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
I think that girls who have trouble gaining weight can get just as hung up as those who wish to lose weight. I'm sorry that you seem to be trying quite hard with no noticeable results, but like losing weight, gaining weight won't happen overnight (a good thing for some of us!).
I agree with the whole muscle mass thing. I think that the best thing to do would be to talk to someone who might know the best type of diet for your body type. Eating too many fatty foods to gain weight will make you unhealthy and is bad for your heart no matter how thin you still may be (just look at the Atkins people!).
Why not try a dietician or a gym expert/personal trainer for advice?

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
Be very careful of what kinds of fats you put into your body. Eating junk food, fast foods, etc is very bad for you...especially in high quantities. You may not be gaining weight, but high metabolism or not, you could be clogging your arteries and upping your cholesterol. Not good. Drink a "weight gainer" protein shake 1 a day for a few weeks and see how that helps...eat less per day...3 solid, square meals. (As Mein and Krys suggested). If that doesn't work, you can also go to see a Nurtritionist. But, please...don't keep eating the fatty foods that you are. It's really not healthy for you at all.
Take care of yourself!!

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
I agree with the protein shake comment. It might sound funny at first, but a high calorie shake will flood your metabolism and allow you to add some lbs. Try Champion nutrition Ultramet, or EAS myoplex sport.

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
Ok guys here's an update (like you really care ;) I've gained some weight, I don't know how much, I don't actually have a scale, but I can see a bit of difference. I took some of your advice, been eating avocado sadwhiches (yum yum yum), lots of healthy snacks like nuts and drinking milkshakes or protein shakes everyday, the hershey's shakes that come in the bottle are good. Also I know it's bad, but donuts and ice cream (but only after a good meal). My booty's lookin a wee bit more smackable these days. Yay!

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
Maybe you should keep tabs on your diet... especially calorie and protein intake from fitday.com But it's good that you're gaining weight and you want to.

Re: I've tried and tried, still not gaining weight
I have a similar problem, the last time I went to see a doc he pretty much told me that I need to gain some weight. He mentioned doing excercies with weights as a way to gain since strength training builds muscle. Also try not limit the amount of cardio that you do.
