Wow...Thanks for the story Vy. I can't believe that. I take vitamin E every day and now I'm a little undecided on doing so...../:O
Oh I know, I was taking 1000 IU everyday. But now that I saw this story, i'm just gonna stick to one multi-vitamin a day. Because too much of A,D,E, & K isn't good. Reason for that being is that they are fat soluble vitamins, Which means they do not get flushed out of your system like water soluble vitamins. High doses of fat soluble vitamins get stored within the body, therefore if you take higher then the recommended daily dose you are essentially toxicating your body which poses a great risk to your liver and possibly other vital body organs. which can lead to death over a certain period of time.Quote:

I am studying nutrition at the moment and have lots of studies to back up the good stuff about Vitamin E. At the end of the day though it is a personal choice and you have to do what feels right for you.

Thanks for posting this Vyanka! I never imagined my Vitamin Supplements would be the cause of my becoming a young beautiful corpse! I was hoping for something more exciting! LOL!

I think with the exception of Vitamin C which is pissed out if in excess, too much of any supplement is overbearing on the body. My vitamin E oil states that one should not exceed the daily dosage so I follow that.
There was a documentary here not long ago about the ill effects of taking too many vitamins and how they can interfere with other metabolic processes etc. Too much of a seemingly good thing is not always beneficial.
Funny thing is first we don't absorb all of any vitamin, water soluble or fat soluble. Also the FDA keeps us very low on the list for RDA only to help prevent us get our vitamins, and to just cover their ass! Vitamin C for example, our daily vitamin has very little C in it, well so we don't get scurvy. I have a heart condition, my doctor said up to but no more than an extra E 3 times weekly! I also need (but don't, stupid me) to take a Magnesium daily along side my multi. See the vitamins like E, Mag. and Potassium are heart vitamins, and extra would not hurt. 10000iu's pf E, was too much i was told. This can lead to overdose, but before many health problems as the vitamin builds up slowly in the body.
For 1 it a great heart vit. but too much can throw you into an arrhythmia, not good.
Water soluble vits. can have nasty side effects too. Too much C can cause diarrhea which can lead to dehydration! Stick with a multi. and eat many many vegetables and fruits, now and again pop an exttra E, C or whatever you like. I would not do it everyday.
Just my observations with my body. And what i was told to help me along with my heart condition.

they had this on the morning show this morning. I believe the doctor said the RDA was around 22 IU's? And that your typical multi vitamin had around 200 IUs (which was considered ok) and your mega vitamins had like 1000 to 2000 IU's which is waaaaay too much to be taking especially everyday and could likely have adverse effects on your health.
Vitamin E is great. The best way to get it is from your diet.
It is not just Vitamin E that you can get too much of...
You can get too much of ANY Vitamin or Mineral. You have to be VERY careful when taking supplements.
Lots of foods are already fortified with most vitamins that you need - Vit C in cereal, Calcium in Bread, Vit D in milk etc... Supplements are a big fad right now and arent needed by most people (most, not all)
There are 4 sets of Dietary Reference Intakes set by the FDA.
One is the EAR - Estimated Average Requirement - this is a set MINIMUM that 1/2 the population needs in the diet to maintain a function (whatever the vit/min is used for in the body)
Then theres the RDA - Recommended Dietary Allowance - This meets 98% of the populations needs.
The AI -Adequate Intake is includes any nutrients that dont fit into the EMA or RDA for lack of beneficial evidence
Lastly there is the Tolerable Upper Intake Levels - WHICH MAY be lower than you THOUGHT. These are when the vitamin or mineral becomes toxic. Its not hard to do if youre munching Vit C during a cold.
I once had a person at a Natural Store sell me Vit C. This lady had no idea what she was talking about. She told me to take 3 - 1000mg tablets a day. And she had me on a vit supplement that had 1000 mg in it. Needless to say NO ONE needs 4000MG of Vit C... you should do research on ANY AND ALL supplements your take - dont take some person making $7 an hour at the Natural Food Store to know... Id doubt they have any formal training in the field...
Hope at least some of my gibberish makes sense...

p.s. Im studying to be a Dietician so if you have any q's about this kind of stuff please ask me! Its like extra study for my job - and I love learning about it!
Vitamin E in supplement form is crap...I would assume this is what the study is referring to, indirectly. If you were able to get 400IU of vitamin E from food I think it would be fine, but that would be tough on a daily basis. Which is basically the crux of the issue anyways- nothing that wouldn't/couldn't happen naturally!Quote:

That's not THAT much, nor is it a ridiculous suggestion if she was referring to treating a certain ailment...long term that would be bad only because of the fillers in the Vits (time release= bad!). But it's not like eating an acerola a day would kill you, and they have 10000 mg of Vit C!Quote:

Like someone said, you just excete theexcess anyways. You need like 17000 mg a day to get to diahrea levels, and some people think of that as a cleans, anyways! lol
All the more reason to rely on healthy foods for our vitamins and not the synthetic isolated vitamins created by man. Eating wrong and trying to compensate with manmade vitamins does not work. Besides, of the 12 or so vitamins we can isolate, there are thousands, if not millions more that are synthesized in fruits and veggies that cannot be isolated by man. Some are in quantities so small that science disregards them, but the body has been relying on them for millenia, and they are crucial for optimal health.
The b12 vitamins my mom got me contain 10,000x the recommended daily dose, to be taken daily! B12 is another that stores in your body, theoretically I'd only have to take that pill once every ten years. ;)
I'm vegan, I should be taking more multi's, for at least calcium and B12 and a few minerals [when they took my iron awhile ago it was 15.2, I'm really not worried about that one]. A lot of my food is fortified, so I'm not really terrified, and even when I was really good about taking supplements every day I didn't really notice a change in health.
My multis contain . . . 100UI, or 333% to be taken twice daily.
I read the article as well a few days ago. I am just going to skip a few days and still take the 400IU I was taking. I do eat a lot of almonds, (especially when I dance. I pretty much snack on almonds, apples, balance bars and low fat cheese. Sounds funny, but it's energy, it keeps and it doesn't bloat me out. Sometimes I add dried or cooked edamame and baby carrots to that list.)
then after work I go to Carl's Jr., J in the box or B. King;D
I think you just have to modify.
cheers,
Corey
