She's barely 2 years old! Do you think a fan is broken inside?
is it a laptop?
no a pc.
OOPS! I meant to put this in the lounge! DOH!
anyhow, I noticed it the day before yesterday as my daughter is playing Fashion Show Barbie on my compy. It started glitching and I could smell this electrical burning type smell. Anyhow, I remove the cdrom and shut off the computer but the cd was totally burning! and the cpu felt super warm! So now I only keep the computer on for a short period of time and haven't been using my cd drive. But that sucks, ya know? I don't want to take it anywhere but I guess I really have no choice, huh?
lol oopsy...i was kinda wondering, but ya know...anyways my laptop is about the same age and had the same problem around august of this year. I was told it was probably a fan inside, turns out it wasn't. I had some new insulation paste stuff put inside, which helped and then I purchased a "laptop cooling center" or something. it was about $30, and I set my computer on it and it gives it 4 extra fans. it doesn't overheat now, but with a pc...good luck! perhaps a broken fan or maybe some insulating paste for you too?
hmmmm, I've never heard of insulating paste I suppose that could be an idea. The wierd thing is I've never heard any sort of "fan" come on before...Is there even a fan inside? lol
Either that or Barbie is just SMOKIN' huh? LMAO
In the back of your PC (probably) there should be a vent...circular. As soon as you turn on the PC, that fan should kick on.
well there is no circular vent in the back. Just large-ish circular holes. I think the vent is on the side though. (or it could be the top if I chose to set it that way) It doesn't sound any different though. Like it doesn't sound quieter.
Open your case to your computer.
Turn it on.
Look at the power supply fan, case fan and CPU fan (it's a fan atop a large heatsink). If the CPU fan isn't spinning, you need to replace at least that fan. This is not difficult, but can be daunting for the uninitiated, so wear something hot and ask a guy that knows computers to replace it for you.
hmmm...I don't see any sort of screw holes to remove anything...
what kind of rig is it? Look for handles on Dells that slide or pivot. HPs are often the same way.
The back will sometimes have thumbscrews on HP/Compaqs.
PM me if you need private help.
it's a gateway. I swear there are no friggin screwholes anywhere. In the back there are a couple little bolts with holes type things. kinda like I would need a round allen wrench to open it. if there were such a thing as a round allen wrench. It's starting to get warm again so I think I will sign off for now. If I can't figure out anything by tomorrow I will pm you. thanks. :-)
I'm betting on the fan for the power supply...which means a new power supply. Check your warranty, though...they're standards warranty (I think) is 2 years.
^ Unfortunately, if it's the PSU, Gateway uses proprietary PSUs and motherboards, so she has to get a non-ATX 2.0 standard unit.
If she gets me the model of the PC, I can source that PSU. Now whether or not she wants to replace it herself is another matter.
Really? Huh.....mine didn't....but then again, mine is 5 years old, vs 2 :-P
