Trojans, Worms, Viruses and the Web
Greetings all,
The Holidays always see an influx of nasty computer viruses, worms and other things designed to cause you and your friendly website operators grief.
As has been mentioned here a number of times, the ways to best protect yourself involve using a secure web browser, having a recent and frequently updated Virus program, as well as perform frequent scans for trojans and data miners with Ad-ware scanning software.
On the topic of secure web-browsers, Firefox is a freely available web browser that works with 99% of the websites and functions as a complete replacement for Internet Explorer. Simply switching to, or preferring Firefox can reduce the number of viruses/worms dramatically. It's a very small download so even modem users can get quickly (less than 5mb). It installs easily and even imports all your Favorites/Bookmarks from Internet Explorer.
You can get Firefox at:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
If you are already a Firefox user and also use Broadband, you can highly improve the performance of Firefox by configuring it to use more connections with no delay in data transfer. If you are somewhat computer savvy, the steps for doing this are at:

With the above config values, Firefox web browsing speed can far exceed Internet Explorer.

According to CNN, Firefox has bumped IE below the 90% usage point.
NOTE: I don't recommend deleting IE entirely. You WILL run into DHTML menus and javascripts and such that will NOT work in Firefox. Using IE under necessary circumstances is not likely to destroy your computer......not likely.....not reeeeal likely....

Back in the day, sys admins had to look out for Cuckoo's Eggs, too!

Want to stop Viruses, Trojans, and Worms; dead in thier tracks?
Buy a MAC Power Book with good antivirus software and extra memory. This one step alone will decrease your anxiety level about the above afflictions by about 200 fold.
They so worth the money you spend on them.
