Does everyone take supplements of some kind?
I'm starting a 30 day detox tomorrow as well as an exercise plan. A lot of my friends use diet pills etc but although they work they seem to have adverse side effects and I'm a bit nervous about putting things like that into my body. The detox plan suggests kelp, ginger and cranberry supplements as well as multivits.......has anyone here lost weight and got more energy/better tone through simple diet and exercise, rather than resorting to pills? If so, would you mind sharing your experience with me?

Please be aware that I'm only sharing my personal story and not advertising. The poster above asked and I'm responding. Okay...........

I used to be one of the pill poppers. I used to pop many pills in re: diet as my diet is never any good and not having enough daily or overall exposure to the sun during the week (due to working of a night) does also affect one's health..... then came a day where I just was over all the pill popping. There had to be something... anything.. out there that will help me suppliment my diet nutritionally.
I found it: Himalayan Goji Juice. I have been using it since mid-2004 now... and all I can report is positive side-effects from it. It de-toxifies my body as well as helping it nutritionally.
This.. alongside exercise.. a decent diet (nothing too fatty and so forth).. has helped. No pills.
I use a suppliment (the Goji Juice) due to the pure fact that the fresh food available in the local supermarkets up the road do not contain enough nutrients. It is due to how they are transported as well as general farming practice.... the only way I would be able to actually gain all the nutrients I require is if I only bought organic foods (and/or grew my own) however that is out of my price-range therefore I have to suppliment.

What you may want to try ( many have had good results) is to try replacing a couple meals with whey protein shakes. Still eat at least one full meal of all the basic food groups and snack natural foods. A whey drink blended with milk, (a banana and a teaspoon of peanut butter, if you need the calories) will still give you the nutrition and you need. If you workout, your metabolism will be equally as increased as if you took a diet pill of some sort. Only you'll be MUCH more healthy for it. Most serious people into healthy fitness do not belive in those kinds of supplements. Vitamins, some herbs, amino acids and protein supplements are the most popular.
It never hurts to do a lot of reading if you want to know about something.
Give Amazon a try. There are plenty of great books on fitness and nutrition.
I like this one, but it may not be right for you:

I was much like GoldCostGirl with the pill popping, now that I finished my degree in exercise science I know that most if not all supplements have risk factors or just cause you to have expensive pee. When I left for school away from home this last semester, I bumped up my cardio and didn't lift as much which helped a little to drop some weight but most of it for me was my eating habits. Since I've left, I've lost 11 lbs just by avoiding red meat, pork, no soda, only whole grains (very little white bread) mostly spelt bread, replaced most milk products with soy or rice milk. and I try and eat a salad every day. The weight seriously started falling off! I still allow myself some fun food but only in moderation.
I did used to make a protein shake when I was lifting weights but then I learned that protein mixes have MSG in them which is scary to me! If you don't feel like your getting your daily nutrition requirements then pick up a multivitamin but try and get it in liqued form since the body will absorb it better. Sorry this is kinda all over the place!

I'm thinking that's why I have found results with the Goji Juice... it is a liquified form of nutritional suppliment. Also... thanks to the Goji... my cravings for "bad" foods is almost nil.
Personally, I strive to not eat anything with white flour or the like. I dropped all kinds of meat except seafood out of my diet. I don't consume as much dairy anymore: no yogurts, no milk.... loooooove my cheese so that won't be gone. I use rice cakes instead of bread. I strive to drink water, cranberry or orange juices. The fresh salad also works as I notice I feel great (emotionally) after eating one compared to eating something unhealthy (anything high in fat, sugars, preservatives and so forth).
I have always subscribed to the theory that good nutrition (eating "right" alongside any liquified nutritional suppliments if you find you need the aid) and exercise is the way to go.

Re: Does everyone take supplements of some kind?
Thanks girls - have been on my diet for 6 days now and am going to have a break tonight and tomorrow and just eat what I want - the diet itself is fine, I feel better and seem to have more energy, but it's rather restrictive and I think I have more chance of sticking to it if I give myself a Friday night and Saturday all day off it - then I get back on it on a Sunday until the following Friday. I've also had an exercise programme drawn up by a personal trainer and am following that Monday through Thursday each week, so I hope to see some results within the next few weeks - I'll keep you posted!
