crashed my car and failed...
okay, i just got a car about a week ago. its a 97' pontiac grand am. i took up the street to get my nails done and when i came home i went to hit the brake but accidentally hit the gas and ran up the curb!!!!! not to mention i hit a boulder and a tree!!!! the car only has a few scratches but i had to call a toe truck to lift it for mel!! im so scared to drive. i only have a permit and i rarely drive. i took my road test yesterday and i passed the 3-point turn but i failed the rest bc i ran a stop sign that i didnt see. not to mention the guy was a total dick. i reported him today for his rudeness. he kept make comments like, 'you've gotta be kidding me', and 'you cant be serious'. all bc i couldnt hear him bc he was like 500ft. away from me and he was just waving his hand around. how the hell am i supposed to know what that means? so i took my test again today and the lady said she could issue me my license but she didnt feel comfortable doing it bc she said i didnt look confident. wtf? what do i need to do to pass the damn thing!!!! i only have one try left. was i just meant not to drive? :'( >:( :O :-\

Re: crashed my car and failed...
If you can't yet discern between gas and brake, perhaps some more practice is in order. That will make you more confident, and in turn, less dangerous.
:D

Re: crashed my car and failed...
Take it from me (baaad driver) what CO said, and don't drive all over the place until you feel more confident. Some people are better drivers than others (spatial ability, hand-eye co-ordination, multi-tasking help with the whole driving thing- artsy types have brains that aren't always wired best for driving).

Re: crashed my car and failed...
Self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think you can't drive and you're not meant to, you're gonna suck. If people like some constipated DMV worker who has to get some sort of power trip on 18 yr old girls cuz he couldn't do anything else with his life (and that's just a guess ;).) tell you or make you think that they believe you can't drive, you'll suck. Trust me, driving is a skill that you'll get better and better at. I've been driving for 3 or 4 years and every once in a while, I even hit the gas or break instead because I'm not paying attention or whatever the reason... it's not freakish or unusual :).
Okay, back to DMV people... I dont' understand why they're all so miserable! Seriously, they get so many figgin' holidays! My first test person failed me because I didn't check my blind spot while pulling up next to a cement median (read: unless a fucking car was driving on the median, there was no one there). I don't know where the "lack of confidence" section is on the test... but maybe you should try another DMV place? Maybe she was friend's with the loser guy? Psh. People are so lame. 18 yr old's are better drivers than soccer mom's in gigantic SUV's or 80 yr old's in boat cars... I've never had a teenager drift into my lane because they're losing their vision! (Hm, sorry, I guess I'm tired and grumpy, lol. I'll stop now)

Re: crashed my car and failed...
LOL Damn.. This scene from "Gone in 60 Seconds" is playing in my head after reading this post.
I really lucked out when I took my driving test. The written test was given to me while I was in driving school. Yes, my ex-husband didn't have the patience to teach me how to drive, so he sent me to a driving school.. lol.. My driving test consisted of driving around the block, doing a 3-point turn, driving back around the block to the DMV, and parking the car. I passed of course, but I felt a little jipped, because I really didn't do anything at all to prove that I could drive, and I wanted to show off a little, and do all the things that I had learned while driving in the class. Ah well.
The thing that puzzles me is, this guy that gave you your test, he wasn't in the vehicle with you? I thought that when the driving test was given, they had to be in the car as well?
As for the DMV people, they're all asses. The only "nice" DMV workers that I've known exist in Arizona. They even made me smile for my license picture when I had it renewed there. Always happy and laughing, etc... But for the most part, they've all got sticks up their asses and live to make everyone's (especially young drivers or potential drivers) lives miserable.
The only advice I can give is to try and relax when you're driving. Be confident in the fact that you have control of the vehicle, you control where it goes.
When I first started driving, I drove with both feet. LOL.. My instructor had to get me out of the habit of that. I would use my left foot for the brake, and the right foot for the gas pedal.
Good luck to you Hunny. Don't let the mean and nasty DMV zombies get to you. You'll be fine.

Re: crashed my car and failed...
Hey, it's true! I've been studying that crap over and over. Bleh. In fact, here's the textbook def. (cuz I'm studying hard here :D)
Self-fulfilling prophecy: The case whereby people 1. have an expecation about what another person is like, which 2. influences how they act toward that person, which 3. causes that person to behave consistently with people's original expectations, making the expectations come true.
It really rang bells because a girl commented in class last semester about how she's a really good driver, no accidents or tickets or anything. But, she's friends with a guy who thinks girls are bad drivers and tells her so and that she sucks at driving... So whenever he's in the car with her, she makes all kinds of mistakes, as soon as he's out, she's fine.
*mental hug* Driving's always stressful, whether it's how well u can do it, if you get a ticket or get in an accident, or just ur car or insurance. Don't let miserable old people get to you with the ONLY thing that they're holding over ur head.:meditate:

Yup!! The DMV I always have to go to is great! No lines and everyone is happy and laughing. When my brother got his permit the guy grading his test actually told him, "I'm sorry. You've passed your test but it won't save you any money on your car insurance. Place a 15 minute call with Geiko.":P

Re: crashed my car and failed...
I remember my first time behind the wheel of a car. I drove about 7 miles....in a hour. Talk about being careful.
I also got my pedals mixed up once in driver's ed and ran up a curb.... :scared:
Then they decided to put me on a stick shift. :scared::scared::scared:
Haven't driven one since. :relieved:

Re: crashed my car and failed...
I took the easy way out I went to driving school when i was about 16, 17 and they gave me my license. Thats way easier cause you take the test with your school teacher and then from the school he sends you to take your pic etc. All of my class got their license and we were quite a few. I think its harder when you go to DPS and take the test there.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! YOU ARE PARTIALLY BLAMING THE DMV GUY FOR YOU FAILING BECAUSE HE WAS A DICK!! IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NOT AN EXCUSE!
Do you realize that if you cannot drive with any amount of confidence then you have no business being on the road!!
What do you think is going to happen to you when someone driving accidentally hits you because of some unsurety you have about switching lanes or making a turn or no signal or anything like that?? You put your location as Phoenix, and I spent four months in Arizona last year and I didn't think it was a picnic to drive around in. Shortly after I left Phoenix, a friend of mine had a cousin (16-year-old) that was killed in a car accident by a 19-year-old who made an unsafe lane change. I know this can happen at any age but it was pretty damn senseless!
I am not an expert by no means and have had my share of car accidents and speeding tickets, but I DID NOT DRIVE AROUND ANY CITY WHEN I WAS 18 UNTIL I KNEW WHAT THE HELL I WAS DOING!
I do not think your DMV guy was being a dick. This is not an easy job for them, nor is it pleasant. Albeit, his demeanor may have been condescending and inappropriate. BUT FOR CHRIST SAKES YOU WENT THROUGH A STOP SIGN! You risked his life, your life, and anybody else that might have been driving through at that time.
Why don't you look into getting some driving lessons instead of jumping from DMV to DMV. You are definitely going to have your share of accidents, and I wouldn't wish this on anyone, but if you accidentally kill or maim someone or a child because of insecurity and nervousness while driving, how are you going to live with yourself.
I know this posting is harsh, but you need to wake up and take some responsibility. You are not mentally mature or ready to start driving (maybe in small towns and back roads, but not in a city and certainly not around the hills or canyons or whatever of Arizona).
the DMV has a responsibility to pass only those who are mentally mature, responsible, law abiding, and literate. If that makes them dicks and asses, then so be it. But if they passed everyone that drove like you did in your posting then we'd al be dead, disabled, and/or have ridiculously high insurance rates because of people like you.

No one's arguing that the guy should have passed her... obviously running a stop sign is an automatic fail. It's his rude comments that made him an asshole. Sure, she wasn't going to pass after that... but ragging on her instead of grading her all the way through and then telling her what she did wrong so she can learn makes this guy suck. No one has confidence when they don't yet know how to drive. He made the situation so much worse. Calm down, they aren't going to pass her until she can do it right anyway. People get in accidents all the time, even good drivers.
Fishnet, have you taken driving classes? I'd assumed you had... If not, those would help.
-
Re: crashed my car and failed...
Driving classes is a great idea, not only for the technical aspect, but also for your confidence level.
I would also add,the car you chose as your first one is pretty powerful, maybe a smaller car with less power is a better place to start.
Dont sweat whats happened so far.Your going to get this and years from now your going to have funny stories to tell your kids when your teaching THEM how to drive.
Just be safe!!(and please PM me if you ever plan on driving on Va highways)

NO ONE HAS CONFIDENCE WHENTHEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE -- then why take a drivers test.
Bella, I am not spazzing out over this, but I am upset that this is an 18 year old who has no business getting upset over failing a driving test or the instructor being rude. If you read what I wrote, I did say that he did not need to be condescending.
Yes, people get in accidents all the time, even good drivers. I even admitted that I had speeding tickets and have had accidents. But there is the other side to it ... people like Tiamaria who get a license just for being Mr. Good Guy's cousin.
I am not standing on a soapbox. I too got my license at 18, was a cruddy driver and was doomed to have an accident ... and I did. At the same time I got my drivers license, a classmate of mine also did, after he failed the first time. He freaked out on how the DMV guy was an as**** and on and on and went to another county to get his license and was granted it. A few months later, he "didn't see the stop sign" and killed a grandmother and her grandson, who was 8 at the time, has been in a wheelchair since then.
My point to that is not to boo hoo and "these things happen even to the best of drivers" crap, because I know they do. But it happens more and more to the people like Fishnet Stockings who should not have a license if she is nervous or does not know what she is doing. We were all nervous when we took our test, and did we all have the DMV ass**** as our test administrator? You bet we all did.
Agian, not to sound preachy - because I am desperately trying no to. Last summer I was in NY and was following a car that came off a hill, went through the stop sign, and crashed into another car, killing the driver and passenger of the car. The driver of the vehicle that did not stop was 18 years old and just started laughing to the cop saying "dude, did you see how far that car went?" The cop was my cousin, the kid was sober and straight, but he had only gotten his license a month prior. He lacked the mental maturity to be handling a motor vehicle.
When you witness something like that, it snaps you back to reality as to how that could have been you at 17 or 18, all cocky and knowing it all. It was a rude awakening and I just think that Fishnet should take this more seriously.
That's all I'm saying.

Hmm... Well, I don't think that's too big of a deal. Your 14 year old daughter on the road scares me a whole lot less than most 16 year old boys.
