Self Defense for strippers
I thought it would be wise for us all to have a talk about self defense.
Not just from the customers but, other girls.
I carry pepper spray on me at all times. Because if someone gets crazy, >:( particularily other girls I don't want to fight.
This can lead to injury and possible disfiguration.
So I just spray them in the eyes kick them in the knees and call the cops.
this tatic is also good for after work with who knows what the guys are thinking about.
:O
what would you girls do?

Re: Self Defense for strippers
My boyfriend has showed me some self defense moves that I guess he learned in Tai Quon Do (how do you spell that?) or just fighting as a kid and they are surprisingly painful for seeming so easy! I still don't think I could fight someone and I'd like to study self defense or martial arts. My brother was telling me the other day I should get a Taser which I'd love to get but they are around $600 for the one with the lazer site (I'm a bad shot). They are not deadly though but are pretty effective for stopping someone.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
Maybe it's something I should think about, huh?
-
Re: Self Defense for strippers
Best self defense is to just manage the situation wisely... good luck using tae kwon do on some drunk ape... probably just piss him off more.
-
Re: Self Defense for strippers
I know self defense and I took martial arts for years.... I also carry a gun. ;)
-
Re: Self Defense for strippers
i have a permit for a gun too . I carry a stun gun. Did some Muy Thai boxing.

A guy I know was shot with a Taser BY A COP!!!.. He died..:-[ The autopsy/ report said he was really drunk and was also angry so his blood pressure, adrenalin and heart rate was out of control.. when the cop shot him.. the “shock” killed him. I don’t know about US laws surrounding this but they are illegal here in Canada.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
I'm sorry about your friend, Yea. Tasers are legal in the U.S., at least in most states they are. It makes sense that it could kill someone if they have some other health problem. I had a friend who had a heart condition and her doctor told her if she ever used cocaine even once it would instantly kill her. Good thing she never tried it!

YEAH ! Good thing.
Anyway, self defense is soo important, I always wanted a stun gun or something BUT.. I always think, if I need it.. Ima use it no doubt so, this would lead to an offence. SHIT.
What is our best solution? I think even pepper spray is illegal.
Maybe there is a "natural" something that would knock someone out? I think martial arts are best, especially if you know those "FU up pressure points }:D but then again, you have to have contact with the predator!

Re: Self Defense for strippers
wow and i've just been using pepper spray

Re: Self Defense for strippers
hairspray works on some people, not all. Pepper spray is legal in at least some states. It's the mace and pepper gas that isn't. Pepper spray is just made from the juices of red cheyanne peppers. Look at the ingredients. At least the one I saw was. So, technically it is natural. If you feel really threatened there's always spraying hairspray and putting a lighter to the stream. Makes a really cool blow torch! I wouldn't recommend that unless you really feel threatened or are about to be killed/raped so forth. Don't how much trouble it'll get you in or try carrying around a pocket knife. There's also some places, at least in South FL, that offer cheap, some free, self defense classes.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
The best form of self defense is common sence. I am not opposed to people who have guns at all, but I have 2 kids in the house, and by the time I unlocked it, it would probably be too late.
-
Re: Self Defense for strippers
I too carry a gun, have taken martial arts, and I was in the Marine Corps for a little while.
I also carry a duct taped roll of pennies in my purse. I pull them out and put them in my hand when I walk out to my car after work and don't put them back up till I'm on the road.
I took Muy Thai and Tai Chi both along with the USMC's training course so I can be dangerous when I have to be.
You best bet is to stay sober, free of drugs and keep you wits about you. A women's self-defense class might make you feel more ecure and help but they best thing to remember is that a car key can puncture a lung if you punch hard enough with it.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
(Djoser makes mental note never to fuck with Kitana...)
pepper spray--good, who cares if it's illegal if it saves your ass, will work on most
Roll of pennies--really fucking good, especially if you already have a mean punch, and you punch them in the throat
Common sense--best
gun--next best, as long as you not only know how to use it but won't hesitate...
I am partial to choke holds and using my elbow. Choke holds are fucking awesome. It's quite a feeling of power to feel them suddenly turn to jelly, and know that you can kill them if you want to--though I never did. It doesn't take too much wrestling skill to use them, but if you run into someone who has had wrestling, especially jujitsu style--use plan B!
The elbow is excellent for close in fighting and works quite well for breaking ribs and jaws. But better use the right portion of your elbow or you'll paralyze your lower arm temporarily, lol. I have never been forced to use the elbow in anger, fortunately, but the bag is a great way to master it's use.
I would highly advise anyone who can use one to play with a heavy bag as much as possible--it's funny but I just posted today about the fact I found a gym with one in the Lounge.
The other thing to remember is that size doesn't mean shit in a serious fight, except some of the bigger guys can be harder to take down if you don't know what you are doing. If, on the other hand, you do, than noone will be easier to take out than some overweight ex-jock who thinks because he played football in high school and has been in a few brawls he is a bad-ass.
If you really think the guy--or girl--means business, go for the eyes or the throat. Most guys won't expect this.
Muy Thai is what Frank Dux used to achieve his record knockout total. He was the real-life Bloodsport guy. Not really big, not pumped up, not all that nasty looking, but lethal...

Re: Self Defense for strippers
GrnBeret posted some excellent pointers on this topic about 6 mos ago. The thread includes some other very usefull tips. IMO the topic of counter-suveillance driving needs further explanation.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
I actually got the idea from my sister and her friend who'd both tried it to see what it would do, because some guy kept following them an trying to show himself to them. I know it can be dangerous, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that realizes this.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
It helps to know pressure points too. For instance if you grab someones hand and roll their hand into a fist under your fist and twist the arm to make their elbow point up, squeeze their fingers into their own palm really really hard you can have total control of the situations. These are taught by many martial art schools. If your friendly with your local law enforcement you can ask them (when they aren't busy) a pressure point move or two. When I did dance I asked a custy who turned out to be an off duty cop to show me some moves after I danced, pretty cool dude too. ;D

Re: Self Defense for strippers
hey, is there a common place that I can get pepper spray? is it sold at like, duane reade or something (i doubt that)?

okay, i actually haven't heard of this before... how does having a roll of pennies in your hand help or hurt someone? how do you hold them/ what do you do? thanks :)

It adds weight to the punch, which helps considerably.
Most of the destructive power of a punch comes from speed--look at a picture of Bruce Lee sometime, the guy weighed about 125 lbs, lol. But he could kill a guy twice his size with one punch.
The physics of the situation are governed by this equation:
energy=mass X velocity squared
However, mass is not to be trivialized, and adding mass to the punch is always very useful.
Having something to wrap your fingers around tightly is also somewhat helpful for keeping a nice compact fist.
But you do want to concentrate the striking force of the blow in the first two knuckles of the fist, which is why a roll of dimes is better, if more expensive, lol.
I have a set of gloves for the bag with very thin iron bars set into them, and you can hit harder when wearing these. I like alternating rounds with and without these, however, so as not to rely on them excessively.
I wouldn't go get a roll of pennies or dimes for self-defense unless you first learn how to throw a good punch, preferably using a heavy bag--just be sure to wrap your wrists to avoid injury.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
Um... everyone... uh... hey, can I give my two bits worth? I really don't want to piss anyone off, but a lot of stuff has been said in this thread I would like some of the dancers to think about a little more before they get themselves killed. If a dancer, usually in the form of a small woman, meaning she is not blessed with a polynesian womans genetics (I've met many a polynesian woman that could hand me my ass anytime she wanted, and I weigh in at 225) tries to use some made for tv asian derived martial "art" she may as well let the guy rape her, since that would at least speed up the process and get it over with faster. Size absolutely matters in a street situation, for rolled up coins to help you punch harder you have to know how to punch in the first place, Bruce Lee never killed anyone with one punch, and Frank Dux was a hoax, so don't go watch Bloodsport and think you can wip the piss out of someone while temporarily blinded. If you are a woman and really want to be able to defend yourself properly against a man, usually bigger, stronger, meaner, and possibly on drugs, yes, sprays, stun guns, etc, should be your first choice, but you have to get them out, and then have enough distance to use them on your attacker, which may not always be possible. If you are thinking of truly protecting yourself in an unarmed situation, the only, and I mean ONLY effective fighting system I know of is Brazilian JiuJitsu. Like Djoser said, chokes are great way to defend yourself if you know how to use them, and Brazilian JiuJitsu is the best system on earth when it comes to using and putting your body in a position to use them. Not only this, but if someone does try to rape you, Brazillian JiuJitsu is the hands down most effective system to combat a rapist. Take a couple months worth of classes and you will understand what I mean. Do not think you will stop a grown man with a punch. So many fighting systems promote themselves as effective for monetary gain, and many a person, man and woman, has found out the very hard way how ineffective those systems are. Unless you are a female muay thai champion with years of fighting experience, do not try and out punch a man, it just isn't going to work. Brazilian JiuJitsu will take about a year to become proficient enough at to use on someone who does not know the art, but trust me, the confidence you will have in knowing how to defend yourself in this way will exceed carrying around any number of guns. Okay, sorry for the long thread, but I've had friends who bought into the whole Bruce Lee, Frank Dux, spinning back triple lindy kick bullshit, studied for years and years, and found their asses in their hands courtesy of someone who couldn't tell Bruce Lee from George Bush.

Bruce lee never killed anyone with one punch, probably because A) he didn't want to go to jail for life, and B) he didn't feel it was necessary.
But if he punched me in the throat, I'd be one stone dead motherfucker, and I can take a punch quite well almost anywhere else, as a few of my opponents can testify.
After reading your post, I checked up about the Frank Dux myth.
Not the van Damme bullshit, as anyone who knows about fighting can agree is pure fantasy. I found it quite amusing to read about him getting decked by his bodyguard at a stripclub in New york a few years back. But the real man, who supposedly used Muy Thai to establish an impressive knockout record, apparently does have his detractors as well as his believers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Dux
I commend your warning the ladies that "...for rolled up coins to help you punch harder you have to know how to punch in the first place."
This is what I meant when I stated "I wouldn't go get a roll of pennies or dimes for self-defense unless you first learn how to throw a good punch...", though perhaps more emphasis would be appropriate.
But while the average woman would be ill-advised to fight off a large and determined rapist with contrived and questionable martial arts, I have known women who could sure as shit stop the average guy with one punch, my girlfriend being one of them, and from the sounds of it, Kitana being another.
Women such as these should never hesitate to stop a rapist with whatever skills they possess.

Re: Self Defense for strippers
I'm not arguing with you Djoser, so I hope I'm not coming across as if I am. It's just that this seemed a much more serious topic than say, what look you use at your club, so I was a little more emphatic with my tone. Anyway, no, I don't think Frank Dux was legitimate (show me anyone who fights at the highest levels of a fighting sport and claims to be undefeated and I'll show you someone who is full of shit or, hasn't fought very good competition yet), but regardless of whether he was or not, or if Bruce Lee could kill you with one punch to the throat really wasn't my point. I have just seen too much of this stuff not to take issue with it. Yes, if you stood still and Bruce Lee delivered his best punch to your throat you would be in some trouble, but why would you do that and how often will an assailant stand still so a woman can deliver her best punch to the most vulnerable parts of his body? In theory this is all wonderful, but in reality it does not happen which is why I was trying to make the point that believing it will is a sure fire way to end up in serious trouble. I am not a high ranking belt in Brazillian JiuJitsu, so I don't want to speak as if I am an expert, but I'm a decent sized guy and the first class I took I was absolutely embarrassed by a woman half my size who had been practicing the art for one year. The best I could do is get a hold of her and try and control her, basically I was fighting for my life, not the other way around, so I know it would work much better than hoping one punch lands in the right place.

No problem, lol...
I am actually glad you said what you did, because self-defense isn't something to be overconfident about! Having mace, pepper spray, a roll of pennies, or even a gun is of no use if you fuck it up and the guy just gets mad you tried it.
I have to laugh at your description of the woman giving you a hard time in that class--I never had Brazilian jujitsu, just the regular kind. There was an older guy who was teaching it, who was really, really good. If this guy came at you your first inclination would be to laugh at him--he was old and kind of fat--but that would have been a serious mistake. He was a master with choke holds, and had actually invented a 'cardiac arrest' move which was frightening in the extreme. I wish I had taken many more classes than I did, the guy was so good.
But I remembered well the principle of using the attacker's own weight against him. This would be useful for some of the smaller women, especially.
And the little ones, jesus, the hardest I have ever been hit was by a short guy. We were sparring, with fucking gloves, no less--but he hit me so hard on the forehead that my lower jaw snapped down and snapped back up, chipping a tiny piece off one of my front teeth. I had made the ridiculous mistake of scootching down so as to be at his height, and also believing he wouldn't try to hurt me while sparring with his friend, lol. Some people never play.
