tipping dilemma (am i tipping too little?)
at my current club i currently pay 30-40$ stage fee for most shifts and then i usually tip the mandatory 5$ to the dj (sometimes i give him 10$, especially now that i work only weekends). however, no other tipouts to staff are mandatory. i used to religiously tip 10$ to the managers, but they'd sometimes refuse, so now i only tip the general manager 5-10$ and that only randomly (when i feel like getting out the money, which isn't often). i also throw the floor manager/doorguy 2-5$. now, these guys aren't assholes, they really get every girl's back regardless of whether she gives them 2$ or 20$. if a guy is messing with a girl, they kick him out on his ass immediately. my question is, should i start giving them all more money, and if so, what should i be tipping out to staff, since it's not mandatory (except the five bucks to dj)? it's really been bothering me, because i feel bad, but i've been burned before overtipping management/staff that didn't help me out despite giving them a hefty tip each shift. i just don't know what to do about it.
Re: tipping dilemma (am i tipping too little?)
IMHO, managers shouldn't be tipped. That's their job, to manage. They should be doing it well regardless of who tips or not. DJs I always tip according to how good of a DJ they are (we're supposed to tip ours 10%, and I usually do at least that, unless we have a really awful DJ who can't seem to stay in the DJ booth)....door men I usually tip $5. We don't have a house mom, so I don't have that to contend with. If I bug the bartender a lot to refill my drinks, I'll tip a dollar per drink every few drinks. But that's all I pay, except my stage fee. Unless you're making mad bank, it sounds to me like you might be overtipping...but if you're happy tipping them that way, then don't worry about it!

Those are decent Houston tips girl. I would give the DJ a little more, and only tip the floorguys if you've had to deal with them that night, like if they have your back or walk you to your car. I always give managers at least $10 a piece.
Abagail, in Texas, managers expect tips.

Keep your money. You worked for it :)

That sounds about right, though yeah, I tend to tip the manager every night and not the floorguys. I used to when they actually did shit, like regulate the action on the floor and find me tables, but when they hired a bunch of lazy fucks who wouldn't say boo to an overly grabby customer I stopped. I still tip the manager because he actually does stuff for me once in a while. Basically, you tip the people who help you out.
