Thongs and UTIs
Hey ladies, don't mean to get too personal here, BUT...when you started dancing, did you suffer from urinary tract infections? Since I have started dancing 3 months ago I have suffered from not one but TWO UTIs. I know you get a UTI from having sex after long periods of abstinence, toys, and thong underwear too. I have only been with my fiancee over the past 5 years sexually, I make sure I pee after sex, and I am increasing my water and cranberry juice intake. I think it may be the thongs I have to wear, as I have never wore them before I started dancing. So I am thinking of switching to a cotton crotch thong or just wearing them only when I have to go onstage.
Has anyone else out there suffered from UTIs on the count of dancing? What did you do to help the problem? I already saw my doctor today for meds, but I don't want this to be a reoccurring thing. I can't live this way! It hurts! Help! :(

Re: Thongs and UTIs
Gee, I get plenty of UTI's too, and most of the time I wear thongs..is it required at your work to wear thongs, or could you wear like, see through booty shorts? It could help maybe. They also have AZO cranberry pills if you dont like drinking the juice.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
I work at a topless club where we wear thongs onstage but while walking around on the floor we have to cover up our butts with booty shorts (not allowed to wear anything see-through). We usually wear the thong underneath shorts, skirts, etc. I was thinking of ditching the thongs and wearing them ONLY for my stage dances (we strip down to a thong). I like dancing and am making great $$$-I would hate to quit but I do not want to screw up my urinary tract either.
I like your cranberry pill advice. I like the juice, but so high in calories! I'll be sure to check it out when I go to the store today (for my 3rd gallon of water)...thanks RD.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
Youre welcome. If you dont find the AZO, its because it is more than likely in the tampon/pad isle. I went to CVS and looked for it everywhere in the OTC medicine section, had to ask for help, then the guy said it was where the tampons were. Guess they think only girls get UTI's ;) You could also ask your dr if you could get an extra supply of the antibiotics since you seem prone to them. I keep a few extra on hand in case I cant get to the dr right away. Good luck :)

Re: Thongs and UTIs
Thanks, I feel better already (after my 2nd jar of cran juice LOL). I think I may be prone to them due to the thongs. This barely happened to me before I started dancing, but those lycra thongs are to blame I think. Damn them!
Geeez, I know every occupation has its hazards, but this is ridiculous! LOL!

Re: Thongs and UTIs
I know they are horrid! I had my worst one (or so I thought) a couple of weeks ago. Ask any SW'er that chatted with me, I was in complete pain and peeing blood. I went out that night and got azo (the kind that turns your pee orange, it numbs the bladder up too so you cant feel the contracting) and got cranberry juice..I drank 32 oz of juice and water water water, went to the dr 3 days later, they did a test, and I had already gotten rid of it. Good for me!

Re: Thongs and UTIs
P.S. on top of retired Dancers great advice... try to find a non-sweetend cranberry juice if possible. sugars can affect an inflammed urinary tract.
also for all others viewing if you get common UTI's it could be a sign of other problems..
Bladder infections, STD's or even Diabetes.
if these symptoms persist you may need an perscribed antibacterial drug.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
Go to the doctor and have him or her prescribe you some Cipro. It is an antibiotic that cures UTI's.Good luck.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
Cipro has lots of side effects. But of course your doctor will take a look at your medical history before prescribing you anything. I just use the regular ole septra-suphar antibiotics. But with cipro, theres an increased chance of pulling some muscle or something like that, I cant exactly remember.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
I haven't noticed that I get more UTI's, since I get them all the time and have since Jr high.
But it might help a few of you guys; don't wear undies at all, ever. Except for work of course. I haven't worn undies (except work) for about 10 yrs. I have only gotten 2 yeast infections and they were after my kiddos were born. The Dr. said that's common right after labor and delivery, but this is just a sugestion.
My Dr. also say that if you refrain from wearing undies, it will help with UTI's too.
Oh, the AZO helps a little.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
I've heard (from a good lady friend who is an RN) that (some or overuse of) antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the vagina and then bad bacteria take over. So watch out you don't substitute one problem (curing a UTI) for another.
Just relaying info. (Hell, I didn't know there were any in there.)

Re: Thongs and UTIs
That is true, therelayer. That's why you should take acidophilous while on the antibiotics.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
I dont wear underwear since Ive danced (3yrs) I have noticed this too, same for me.. UTIs are the WORST for dancing
-
Re: Thongs and UTIs
Ive never noticed this, but I usually wear bikini undies anyway, at least to bed. But when I go out somewhere if I am wearing bikinis, I feel like the world knows lol.

Re: Thongs and UTIs
Well I did go to my doctor and got meds the same day I made my original post. The meds have helped, as I am feeling much better today. Been drinking a lot of water and cran juice, and I never wear underwear, except while I am dancing. I've only been with my fiancee sexually over the past 5 years and he hasn't cheated on me so I doubt I have a disease...I swear, it's those darned lycra thongs!!!! I will keep AZO on hand just in case though...and have been remembering to pee after sex too.
I'm just glad it's over now. God. I felt like I was in labor again. Sheesh! Why does this stuff have to happen to us?!!! We already have periods to deal with!!! Good Lord!

Re: Thongs and UTIs
I get A bacerial infection from thongs....But I have been getting one almost every month and am worried that it might hurt me in the long run. I have been to a gyno every month and gotten metronidazole sp? but it simply isn't getting rid of it... I'm not wearing thongs anymore, and have even stopped using tampons because the doc says they can trap bacteria....Since I haven;t been working I can't afford to spend $500 for a newdoctor....what should I do?? Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask...
