an english newbie
Yep, yet another newbie with a load of dumb questions to ask! I promise, I've looked around the whole of the forum, and I think I'm pretty clued up, but I just want to make sure.
I've never worked as a stripper before, although I am a trained dancer. I have worked in a strip club (as a waitress) so I've got a fair idea of what goes on. I've got an audition next week (at a club about an hour away from me) and I know that as long as I don't panic, and I get through that night I'll be fine. I'm a good dancer, I'm a nice, friendly person and I'm pretty good looking too, if you don't mind me saying!
However, I am a little nervous and I guess I just need a little reassurance. My hair and make up I'm cool with, and I've got my audition tracks all sorted. I can dance to pretty much anything anyway.
What worries me is:
1) Clothes and shoes. I really have no idea what to wear. Do you suggest I invest in proper costumes straight away, or wait a week or so, till I know I'm in it for the long run? If not, what kind of things can I go for? I really need some inspiration here.
2)Skin. I can get very dry skin if I don't moisturise properly, but I've read in a few places that you shouldn't use body moisturiser because it can cause you to slip off the pole (makes sense to me). Is this true? What can I do about it?
3) Pole tricks. Like I said, I've never pole danced before. Then again, a lot of the girls at the club I used to waitress at didn't do any pole tricks. And I'm a quick learner. Is it a problem if I don't use the pole much straightaway?
4) Confidence. I just know that the audition is going to be hell. I'll probably sweat, shiver and possibly cry afterwards. All I've really been told is that I go down for the audition, and if I'm successful I'll stay the whole night. I take this to mean that I go down there, dress my self up, they take a look at me and as long as I'm not seventeen stone, bald or both, I'll be pretty much OK. So should I go down early, when there are going to be fewer people there, but they'll be more likely to be paying attention to me, or later on in the evening, when it'll be busier, but people might bo a little more distracted? Or is it going to be just as hard the first time whatever I do? Any tips on how to reduce nerves are EXTREMELY welcome!
Minor issues are: I look young. Like jailbait. I'm 18, but I have a hard time buying cigarettes (age limit 16 here) without ID. I don't think this is gonna be a problem, but I just thought I'd mention it in case anyone's had any problems this way. Also, I'm completely on my own in this. I don't know anyone at the club I'm going to. Personally I'm quite happy with this, but can anyone see any problems here? Finally, any experiences at British clubs would be interesting to hear.
I think that's it. And that's actually quite a lot, isn't it? Huh, guess I was less confident than I thought! Any help is so gratefully received, and you know all those little things you forgot when you were a newbie? Tell me about those too! I have no shame in being a newbie, I just want to be the best I can be!
Thank you all!

Re: an english newbie
Have you checked out www.mypole.co.uk/ it's a UK based dancer site. You may even find someone who works at the club you plan to audition at.

Re: an english newbie
Welcome to Stripperweb!!
I've never danced in the UK before, but here are a few suggestions:
Clothes and Shoes: Buy yourself a nice gown and a more relaxed outfit (like a bikini or short dress). Since you are a newbie, you should probably stay away from pants (hell, I still can't get in and out of pants onstage, lol). As for shoes, invest in a nice pair of 6-inch clear shoes with either a cone or stilletto heel. The cone heel is easier to dance in, but not as sexy as the stillettos.
Skin: I also have dry skin. This is what I do - soak in the bathtub with a cap full of baby oil or olive oil before actually washing off (this also helps with shaving). After drying off, I use ultra-light skin conditioners (either Ash Therapy by Avon or Nivea Visage's Shimmer line). If you overdo it, just wipe with a baby wipe, especially your knees and thighs.
Pole tricks: I know nothing about pole tricks except that where I am, they are a waste of effort. Is there a playground with a pole you can go mess around on? Also, make sure you are stregnthening not only your arms and legs, but your core (your abdomen).
Confidence: My best advice is to do it sober - that way, you won't feel the need to drink everytime you dance. Move slowly and in time to the music. Will you be allowed to pick out the songs you want to dance to? If so, pick a few songs and practice in the mirror. Watch how you move and your facial expressions. Then get onstage and work it!! If you have a friend that would be willing to come in with you, invite them along for moral support.
Looking young: I look young as well (Im 27 and have recently been carded for an "R" movie). If you can go back and forth b/w looking young and older (thru make-up and dress), then go for it. One thing though - if you try too hard to look older, you might come across as a little girl playing in mommy's make-up. I've seen it before - not pretty, lol.
Good luck with your audition and let us know how it goes!
