Sitting here, raining outside, storm news on TV says we're in for big flooding. It always says that...3" of rain turns into 10' (that's 3 inches equalls 10 FEET) of increase in the level of the river. I wonder why
Partially, it's our addiction to impervious surfaces - roofing, paving, and other materials that reflect rather than absorb water (you'll notice grass and many natural materials absorb rather than reflect water). So much waterproof covring on ground that used to absorb water = more running downhill into the river...less being absorbed where it's needed.
There are alternaties to these surfaces (pavement that absorbs water, etc) but they aren't often used. Crazy...given how much we need the water and how little good it does flooding the river.
