The patent system is such a joke in this country.
With all the problems we create for ourselves, "they" would rather blame high school students ("America needs foreign students because ours are under-educated") with the decline of American Technology.
Well I guess this is as good a place as any to announce this. I, Destiny, have just been awarded a patent for the, "Stripper Ass-Slap". From now own, any dancer that slaps her ass on stage has to pay me a $2 royalty.
There is a lawsuit which has been going on for quite a long time now, SCO vs. IBM. I'm not sure if it's actually over patents. SCO was formerly known as Caldera, and is claiming ownership of at least portions of the software code contained in Linux. Some people claim SCO is only serving as a "proxy" for Microsoft. I don't know if this is true or not. As to the lawsuit, you can read a slew of related articles at this site

There is also conjecture Microsoft will attempt to stop Linux via software patents. Again, I don't know the answer to that, considering the underlying framework of Mac OS X isn't a variant of Linux, but an older relative to it(Linux) known as FreeBSD. A variant specific to Apple known as "Darwin." Could there be an attempt by SCO to sue Apple as well? Although if I understand the information at this website, SCO hasn't been doiing very well against IBM lately, from a legal standpoint. And Apple is known for initiating a large amount of litigation itself.
