asking the DJ to play my music?
First of all, I tip between $40 and $100 per shift where as most dancers tip the DJ less than $20 if at all.
Now. I want my music. I asked for Massive Attack. All 3 DJs I work with gave me puzzled looks. One asked if it was a new band. So how about NIN? Too slow. Actually, their reservoir had about 3 songs by Trent & Co. Portishead? Not there. I didn't bother to ask about HandsomeBoy Modeling.
I'd like to make a CD for them so they know what I like. But the music has to have some sort of mass appeal, absolutely no instrumentals. I like trip-hop, techno, and Britney Spears.
Suggestions? For example, what song by Portishead has the most mass appeal. I don't want to scare the DJs away with my "obscure" music.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
Sheesh, for that kind of money they ought to play what you want--or at least try a little harder.
A lot of clubs don't allow slower music, so this could be part of the problem. But sadly, so many DJs actually have very limited musical knowledge and/or flexibility, that this is a more common situation than you might think.
I would try using Crystal Method or Prodigy.
"Like I Do", "Vapor Trail", or "High Roller" (from 40 seconds to 1 minute and 5 seconds in) from the Crystal Method "Vegas" CD.
""Tough Guy' from the Tweekend Cd would probably be perfect for you, but might violate a 'no slow music' policy. The song has serious balls, though--so if your DJ has any, he might try it. Almost any song from this CD will work for you, but the more commercially viable two are "Name of the Game", and "Wild, Sweet, and Cool".
Prodigy is also more commonly accepted techno/rock, and from the sound of what you like, "Mindfields" would be great for you. This is on the excellent "Matrix" soundtrack (the first movie), and also on the Prodigy CD "Fat of the Land"--"Narayan" from the same CD being also great for your slower and more sensuous style. The latter must be cut as it is way too long for a stripclub, but is a hot song.
If you like slower stuff and they will play it in your club, don't these morons at least have Enigma?! What about Paula Cole's "Feelin' Love" or Sadie B. Hawkins "Damn..."
Personally, I would love to do a night in which absolutely no top40 was ever played, and playing unique, sexy, and creative music was the only criteria. But this would be hard to pull off, and would require a more enlightened and intelligent clientele than can usually be found.
For the Portishead question...
http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sh...ight=Portishead
I have recently acquired a serious Portishead remix of someone else's song that I am dying to play, but I have to find it first (still getting sorted out from a move). i'll post it wheni find it.
For another few workable commercial/type type songs, you might try "Take my Breath Away" by Berlin, "Human" by Human League, and these are older songs, so if the DJ is stuck in an era you'll still get it.
Or you might give "Justify my Love (12" Orbit Mix)" a try, if you can find it, it's way, way better than the original, but recognizeable.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
yeah but youll find out that most dj's could be replaced by machines and no one would notice or care. They dont come to see the DJ they come to see us.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
AmyLynne...what happened? I'm curious why it is you can't ever let a thread go by about a DJ without bashing them. I'm not starting a flamewar here, just honestly wondering where all the ill will comes from. Do tell.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
Oh...and for the music question, to stay on-topic.
I know Massive Attack. Can't say I'd play much of it aside from "Unfinished Sympathy", honestly. Portishead is slooooooow. That was a whole 'nother thread once upon a time. If your club allows such things in format then groovy. But personally, I'd get fired for it. Only 3 NIN songs? That seems suspicious. There's plenty of playable NIN that any DJ should have in their collection. If they said it was "too slow" can i assume you asked for one of the uber-mellow tracks? I'd make them a cd of stuff you like and see what happens then.

Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
As for the music question.
It sounds like most of the stuff you listed is very slow like DJoser says.
Most portishead is just to slow for most high energy clubs, specially on high energy nights.
But,for that kind of tip out,the dj's should have found a way to take care of you.Either by suggesting different music under format that you would like,or playing your more obscure<sp>music during off times.
Alot of clubs stay within mainstream music because of the client base they have or want to attract.Alot of times obscure stuff isnt allowed.
But most dj's can squeeze shit in so to speak, speacially for a high average tipper.
Alot of clubs also run more then one girl on stage at the same time,so you might have other dancers who have a hard time with it.I know the other girls are not your problem, but its just a consideration to think about.
We dj's and dancers in this business are a very diverse group, the differences in the music we listen to and really like is incredible, thats why most clubs cater to the custies and the demographics of the club when it comes to the music with formats.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
The DJs indeed need to play for everyone. There is more than Eminem, Poison, and whatever replaceable rapper. They need to be shown. Like with Prodigy, other than Firestarter, they just don't know. I love stripping to trip-hop, dance, and techo. Cheezy pop? I love it! Bring on Justin Timberlake.
DJoser, thanks for the suggestions. I'm making all sorts of CDs. One DJ who is super awesome actually admits that he learns about music mostly through the suggestions of dancers.

LOL they ALL should freely admit it,I know I sure do!!!!!
Doesnt matter what kind of music your talking about,I have a dancer I know who will have the newest,or best ideas on what I need.
No way can a dj stay current in all catagories without the input from the dancers, even in our best days.:)
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
Can I get an AHMEN BigGreen not a day goes by that one or twelve dancers clue me in to something I haven't heard and a good portion of the time it is popular and playable! Thanks Ladies!

I think that the majority DJs are eager to play music that makes them the most money. I tip well because I do well. They know this. They also know I can do better, especially if their music puts me in a terrific mood so that the customers want me more.
If you ever want to see my spirits and earnings drop simultaneously, play "Cherry Pie" by Warrant.
I imagine that you are talking about the DJ who played "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crows, "Yellow Taxi" remake by Counting Crows, and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" by Jimmy Buffet for my set. Yes, this has happened. And yes, it pissed me off. In fact, I'm still pissed.
What music do you suggest for good spending?
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
they should never be mixing, or playing gangsta, or cRAP or hiphop, it doesnt work. It only brings in the wannabe pimps and players and thugs and drives real custys away.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
AmyLynne. Seriously. We get the point. I think you've made it enough times in enough threads. Thanks.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
For a sec there,I thought it was me.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
Shit, if I'm tipping $40 it's to stay the hell off of the stage . . . they can buy you what you want or at least play your cds for you. If they won't then cut that shit out and keep your money.
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
Wow...no dj love here.........
Re: asking the DJ to play my music?
I can understand how some dancers dislike DJs, having worked with quite a few bad ones. Hell I've probably bashed DJs as much as anyone here, if you count all my posts, lol.
But the good ones will try to play what you like, as long as it doesn't violate format or get them fired. If you tip them very highly they might even bend the rules and play stuff that might be pushing it, I know I have. Fortunately we have lots of good ones here on SW.
And I have to eat my own words to some extent because both of the other DJs where I work are very cool. Furthermore, one of the new managers there is a great guy and really easy to work with, lol. So I will be the first to admit to judging DJs and managers too harshly.
I am especially happy to see the point BigGrnMnM made about learning from the dancers about music, this is so very true.
We can certainly all agree that this is a great place to come and figure out how dancers and DJs can work better together...
