Ratzinger (Sp?) got elected and took the name Bennedict XVI...
And dude needs a haircut, bigtime...
I dunno why they elected a 78 year old man, though, the guy could die tomorrow and they'd be at it again!

Yeah, he sounds more like an interim pope to me....
i can't believe he's 78!what's goes on in these people's mind's that they elect someone who is ready to kick the bucket!
I'm not too happy about the choice... too consevative. At least we know he wont stick around too long.. (Sorry, God!)
That's what I was wondering too. 78 years old. the one that just died was 84. So if this guy is lucky to live to 90 it will be just 12 years. Something bothers me about him can't place it.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...
Ha! I'm a Lutheran!!!
Needless to say, the Lutherans and the pope did not get along.
^ I just saw the movie Martin Luther the other night it was pretty good.
Don't forget that Democratic senator Strom Thurmond was still filibustering at the age of 99 !
As far as the College of Cardinals choosing Ratzinger, I'd say that this was a deliberate response to liberal politics and media throughout the world !
Does this surprise anyone, especially given the conservative messages JP II espoused over the last 26 years?Quote:

and just for the hell of it....
This was written years before the pope died, so it wasn't... you know. "Insensitive".

I bet the next few popes will all be on the verge of meeting the boss also.
It should take the average popespan from 20-30 years down to 10-15 years.
Actually the average is only about 7.5 years. JPII's reign of 26.5 years was in fact the third longest ever.Quote:

As I understand it, he may be one of the more qualified, as he was part of the investigation of the abuse scandals (vs the bishops who were more oriented to cover-up than exposure.)Quote:

Before any kind of change, the clutch of rigidness grows tighter.
In the US, with it's ridiculous Political Correctness and "Zero Tolerance" and the desire by some to take liberalism to the absurd - this is an example of rigidness that precede's change. For the US political system - change is obviously in motion.
The Catholic Church is just ... a ... little ... bit ... slower....
They could've done better.
I went to Catholic grade school and was taught evolution there. This was the 60's.
Speaking of being backwards, Martin Luther could be as full of shit as any pope. Read what he had to say about Copernicus.
It would've been nice to see an African or Latin American guy elected in, but the monopoly seems to be broadening, from Italy to Europe.
A former member of the Hitler Youth. Good choice.::)
the new pope is on my death pool
Agreed, Muyaha......
Boy, I bet the Polish are annoyed.
I'd bet money on the next pope after this being Latin. I'd like to see black, but yes, as Jenny pointed out, The Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church is not super-progressive.
I'm not one to defend Nazis, but you really didn't have much choice back then. Especially if his parents actually were in the Nazi party or didn't feel like risking their lives to fight against Hitler's totalitarian regime.
That being said, I was also hoping for the Latin American guy, not just because I'm Latin, but because the majority of Catholics live there. How many Catholics are left in Germany? 142?
The Catholic Church has never been known for being progressive, but (and this is aimed at Melonie) at least JP 2 was fervently against the Iraq war. I guess the "culture of life" doesn't apply to Iraqi's. I'm surprised you agree with their politics so much! Do you use birth control, Melonie? Have you or do you have sex outside of marriage, or have you had it in marriage without the intent to procreate? Have you engaged in oral or anal sex? Somehow I doubt the Vatican would give any of us on this site their blessing, regardless of politics.
Good luck to Ratzinger, he'll need it. Hopefully he won't be a drooling, semi-catatonic mass of ectoplasm like Strom Thurmond was the last two or so terms her served.
wow, people are starting to freak out about his Nazi connection, its all they are talking about on talk radio today!
People are acting like David Duke got elected president of the NAACP or something.
Yup, a Hitler youth that thinks gays and rock music are evil. }:DQuote:

Personally, I regard this Pope as a "temporary" measure as his age means he is literally one foot in the grave already to me......
Besides, I denounced my Catholicism many many moons (years) ago now so whatever happens in that "world" doesn't really impact me. It might indirectly just doesn't directly anymore (as such).
No, since he was in charge of doctrinal enforcement. That was his job. I laugh when people get all bent out of shape when a pope actually acts in a Catholic fashion...like they were expecting him to erase 2000 years of Catholic tradition because a bunch of non-Catholics (and some pseudo-Catholics in Western nations) don't like some of the doctrinal positions promulgated by the Vatican.Quote:

Very true, very true. I suppose some people would say he could have refused...but that's why CZs were originally created--political troublemakers.Quote:
