A most unusual and interesting CD
Anytime you see a CD with the Cleopatra label on it, it's bound to be unique--at the least--and quite possibly a real prize find.
I think I just found such a CD--it's called Party o' the Times, and it's a tribute to Prince, featuring such artists as Heaven 17, Information Society, Missing Persons, some strange ones like Gary Numan and Buddy Miles, and even the supermodel Rebecca Romijn Stamos (who does a very sexy rendition of "Darling Nikki", if you cue it up at the right spot).
Cleopatra usually puts out Industrial, Goth, and obscure European stuff--I'm willing to bet that Mr. C or Veronika will know more about the label--but this CD is hard to classify, except that it's good, lol.
Later--
Sure enough, there is some cool shit here...
"Sign O' the Times" by Heaven 17 is fucking hot, as is...
"Pop Life" by Dead or Alive--this one is great for bellydancing style stuff
also pretty good are
"Irresistable Bitch" by Mellow Man Ace featuring Geo (whoever the hell that is, lol), but cue it up a ways in, at least a minute.
"Darling Nikki" is pretty good. I have never been all that impressed with supermodels, but I never knew that girl could sing.
"U Got the Look" by Gary Numan is pretty close to the original, but speeded up a bit and with an 80's touch that works well.
Re: A most unusual and interesting CD
Cleopatra Records is also responsible for covered in black...a cool industrial ACDC cover album and Hot For Remixes with 80's metal guys doing the songs with other guitar players and mixed by industrial type people.

Oh, man, I gotta get those. I think I remember hearing about Covered in Black, and that it was good, but I had forgotten about it until now.
Thanks for the tip!
Re: A most unusual and interesting CD
Heh. Cleopatra is actually considered something of a joke label within the goth/industrial community. Years ago they used to be halfway decent with artists like Leatherstrip on the roster, but they devolved into a label that does nothing but tribute albums to other bands with one or two cool tracks apiece and then tons o' crapola from bands you've never heard of. They did a Skinny Puppy tribute cd called "Hymns Of The Worlock" and it is laughably, horribly bad. "Covered In Black" wasn't too awful, and they did 2 cd's worth of Madonna covers called "Virgin Voices" that had some tasty nuggets on 'em. I'll check out the Prince one , though. Honestly I have come to the point where I just blow past a Cleopatra comp when I see one anymore. That, and the only "cool" music shop around here is down in the city and i haven't had time to go down there in about a month. WHEEEEE and now I go shower and prepare to return once again to the titty mines. huzzah.
Re: A most unusual and interesting CD
Although I've never heard any of it, I love Darling Nikki by the foo fighters and that's actually where I got my stage name from....so I may be required to hunt down this rebecca romijn version now.
Re: A most unusual and interesting CD
I won a few Cleopatra discs; virgin Voices 1 - Madonna, remixed Hits - Berlin, Missing Persons remixed, Gary Numan remix cd, and flock of eagulls greatest remixed. Wit the exception of the last title, they are EXCELLENT cds. They also have a band called Zeromancer on their label from Norway whom I like.

I didn't know Cleopatra had gone downhill, that's a shame.

This one got passed me DJ,what song does Buddy Miles cover?
Re: A most unusual and interesting CD
Baby I'm a Star--It has moments, but I don't know if I would use it in the club I'm at now.
I had meant to play the one by Heaven 17, but I forgot, dammit. Next time, lol.
Re: A most unusual and interesting CD
My old band was actually offered a *thing* with Cleopatra. Terms were you had to do cover stuff so as they could put you on comps for promotion reasons. *See Belle Morte.. another friend band on Cleopatra... They sell said comps at Hot Topic for like $6. They are owned by a bigger label and I can't remember offhand who that is. Basically you get paid crap for publicity. Our guy Robin is still waiting for his royalties for his time with Switchblade Symphony. Blah. NOT the biggest fan of Cleopatra. It is like they at one time exploited the freaky people for cred and now just re-release old catalogs. Good thing Gary Numan has that pilot's gig these days.
