Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
I don't think that they did anything wrong. The girl was causing a problem and it needed to be solved. Today my boyfriend got a call from his son's school from his teacher. Apparently his son (six years old in kindergarten) was refusing to listen to the teacher or something. Maybe if they should call the police on his butt if he gets too out of hand. I've had to pick him up from school on a day when he threw a fit becuase he didn't want to leave and I was about 2 seconds from turning around and leaving him there.

6 years old in kindergarten???How did that happen???
-
Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
^ depends on the districts age cut off period. Most are 4 years old turning 5 or 5 turning 6 during the school year.

I went to kindergarten in NY state. Since I was born in December, I had to wait an extra year. I was 6 I do believe. I think for that specific state, the birthday cut off is after a certain day in November...

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
My Son's Birthday is June 3rd. The Kindergarten he went to didn't let out for Summer break until the end of June. So he was 5 when he started Kindergarten, and 6 before it let out. It's all about how the school year is.
Most likely Bunny's boyfriend's son either started late because of an age cutoff, or just celebrated a birthday.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
My cousin was like that. I remember being all jealous because he didn't have to go to school and i did. A year is eternity when you're 7.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
The school called the police, they had to and that's fine. I think that the cops should have kept the child at school in a room with them and called the mom in. If that didn't do anything then beat em. No, really, if they find a problem with the parenting then maybe she is not best for her child.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
Who the hell tells the school calling you about your KID "Sorry, dude. Too busy." I'd march into my Boss's office and say "Laters, gotta go grab the rugrat."
The MOTHER needs a spanking, and not the good kind!

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
Exactly, Mad. I don't care if your boss is threatening to fire you or whatever. If your kid(s) need you, you should be there. If not, you suck. Jobs are replaceable, children are not.

Not to mention that if they fire you over leaving TO PICK UP YOUR KID IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT, you have pretty decent grounds for a lawsuit that no-one will blame you for.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
There's also plenty of kids repeating kindergarten nowadays thanks to the recent requirements that children must read and write before they move on to the first grade. Knowing your ABC's, counting to 10, and sharing toys with your classmates is no longer good enough.

Yep, if your child can't read fairly well out of kindergartn and you don't offer to get a tuitor for him/her, then the child is held back...
At least that's the way it is in Fairfax, VA.. They are considered to have the best schools, yeah because everyone's been through the grades a few times!
It's hard to decide who to blame for the neglect, the school or the parents.. Maybe a little of both? Neither one might have the time or the resources to properly teach the kiddies.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
I say cuff em and stuff em coocoocoo....
And add a taserin too for good measure!
Seriously if it were one of my "angels"(cough) and they were disruptive to that point...handcuffs would be the LEAST of their worries....I'm a FIRM believer in spare the rod, spoil the child, hell even my own 2 "darlings"(cough, cough)know kids need a spanking sometimes...sometimes even if they don't need one just to keep em in check, lol

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
Well, it doesn't say if this is the first time this child has acted like this. If it is...then they should treat it as a red flag for abuse (physical/sexual/mental). 99% of children do not throw violent tempertantrums out of the blue for no reason at all. If the child has a history of throwing these types of tempertantrums, then the parent needs to learn how to properly discipline the child. If the child is acting out from abuse, then the situation needs to be dealt with NOW.
Other than the "shock" factor...I don't see them getting very far in court...especially with the whole situation caught on video tape.
But, I think that it was handled as best it could be under the circumstances.
The day my daughter chooses to act that way is the day that she gets a hard spanking to the ass. Right now, the 1-2-3 method works great... *crosses fingers*

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
I don't agree at all .... no one knows the mothers situation when I first moved to PA both my parents still worked in NJ b/c it payed more so whenever I or my sister got sick they wouldn't be there for at least 45 min to an hour pending on traffic... If the police had to be called they should kept the child in an empty classroom I believe they did more harm than good... seems to me the child has some type of problems and this probably made it worse... I just moved to florida and the schools already pissed me off... LAw says I can't hit my child but the school here can? Also they go to an aftercare program and if they misbehave they get paddled???:O I told my children no one but me is to put there hands on them....sorry so long....

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
Ok...I just watched the video of this (the actual video). The little girl was ripping papers off the bulletin board and "punching" the principal...climbing the table, etc. HOWEVER, she was sitting quietly in a chair...and THEN the police officers cuff her and take her out.
WTF is up with that? If she's back into good behavior...why are they handcuffing her and removing her from the school? I think THAT was out of line...on everyone's part...so I change my vote. I think that they ALL fucked up...and if they get sued...then good.
You can see the video here: http://courttv.com/video/

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
K, I'm going against the grain here, but I don't think a 5 year old should ever be handcuffed, as the mother of one myself. There were other things they could have done. I watched the video, read the story, I don't think she was that out of control. Kids that age throw fits occasionally. Doesn't mean you gotta handcuff 'em! Put her in a room by herself, call the school psychologist to help diffuse the situation, anything but getting cuffed by the cops. Ridiculous! Even more so that so many people agree with it! Go ahead, jump on my shit now if you'd like....I'll still love ya'll in the morning =)

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
Can't say what side of this I'm on, but the case has apparently taken some interesting turns.
http://www.sptimes.com/2005/04/26/St...rl_in_vi.shtml
Just some tidbits from this article I found interesting:
ST. PETERSBURG - The mother of the 5-year-old girl who was handcuffed at school by police has withdrawn her daughter from Pinellas public schools and is moving out of state, superintendent Clayton Wilcox said Monday night.
The development was the latest in a bizarre saga that began Friday, when a videotape of the handcuffing was made public.

On Monday morning, the Largo lawyer representing the girl's mother appeared on five network news shows. He returned wearily to his office to find a fax from the mother, 24-year-old Inga Akins, stating he had been fired. The fax had been sent from the tabloid TV show A Current Affair, on which the mother appeared Friday and Monday.

Also on Monday came the prospect that the Rev. Al Sharpton would be coming to town. The famous New York crusader and one-time presidential candidate is intrigued and considering weighing in on the episode, his staff said.
"Instantly he felt that it smelled bad, but he wants to research it first," said his spokeswoman Rachel Nordlinger. "It could be a case of police brutality or a case of her civil rights being violated."

Pinellas County records show that a St. Petersburg apartment complex where she lived moved to evict her on March 31, about two weeks after the handcuffing that put her daughter's face on TV screens across he world.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
First time I saw that video completely. Okay to me that was not a violent tantrum at all. That little girl was testing her limits and she obiviously had no limits. LOL her face though when those cops came in was priceless.
-
Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
I think it's much more enjoyable watching cops shoot their legs than kids being handcuffed...but that's just me.
-
Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
I agree that the cops COULD have handled it better....but I do not feel that they had any obligation to do so. The child's tantrum was not overly impressive, short of getting on the table. At that point, she is a danger to herself. The good move for the cops, I believe, would have been to place her in a cruiser...see what she does.....get hold of the mom....figure it out from there. To actually handcuff her most certainly would escalate the situation. Try to show her that it is serious...and see where you can go from there.
But again - I do not feel they were under any obligation to do so.
The mom should be tasered, though.

Re: Unruly Children - Unruly Parents
After watching the video I STILL think the cops did the right thing and here's why
Look at the girls behavior from this angle..make her 15-18yrs old...she is committing several crimes 1. criminal mischief(vandalism-the tearing of papers off the wall) 2. assault(the punching and kicking of the asst principal) 3. resisting arrest(struggling to get away from the police)
Yes she was calm when the police arrived, but the cops needed to worry about their safety and hers.....

But Blade tha point is is that she is FIVE!!! She's a kid. Calling the police is over the top IMO. There are plenty of kids who have tantrums...shi I've seen worse in WALMART!
