Over 1000 things denied to GLBT
In 1996, the U.S. General Accounting Office identified 1,049 federal rights and responsibilities that turn on marital status. Here is a detailed doc about these http://www.gao.gov/archive/1997/og97016.pdf
A January 23, 2004 update identified a total of 1,138 federal statutory provisions classified to the United States Code in which marital status is a factor in determining or receiving benefits, rights, and privileges. This report can be accessed at www.gao.gov/new.items/d04353r.pdf
More examples of non equal treatment of GLBT persons:
States that ban gay adoption
Utah
Arkansas
Florida
Mississippi
TX- in the process of foster parent ban
States with sodemy laws that apply to only homosexuals:
Kansas
Maryland (Felony) Maximum Penalty: 10 Years
Missouri
Oklahoma (Felony) Maximum Penalty: 10 Years
30 US States are what is described as "at will" which means that GLBT can be denied employment or fired from their job for no other reason besides being non heterosexual
In other states GLBT can be denied housing.
Other anti gay actions include:
Jones Univ. bans homosexual alumni from campus. in Greenville, South Carolina
Bring. Young Univ. in Provo, Utah suspends students who are open about their homosexuality.
Columbus Dispatch in Columbus, Ohio publishes the names of homosexuals arrested for having or seeking consensual sex.
Potomac News in Woodbridge, Virginia published the names, occupations, residences of men arrested for engaging in consensual public sex acts
It is particularly disturbing that home addresses are published as that allows homophobes to attack and harrass GLBT persons in their own homes.
But things are getting better with Illinois acting last week to ban anti-gay discrimination, 47 % of the U.S. population 138 million people now lives in a jurisdiction that bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Ten years ago, the figure was 34%.
27% of Americans now lives in a jurisdiction that bans discrimination against transgender persons, up from 4% ten years ago, and 5% just five years ago. Illinois's law also bans discrimination based on gender identity and expression.
However, 156 million Americans, or 53% of the U.S. population, live in a state or jurisdiction where one can be fired, refused service in a restaurant, or denied housing or a loan simply because of his/her actual or perceived sexual orientation.
And 215 million Americans, or 73% of the U.S. population, live in a jurisdiction where a person can be fired, refused service in a restaurant, or denied housing or a loan simply because of his/her actual or perceived gender identity or expression.
Re: Over 1000 things denied to GLBT
And people think gays shouldn't be fighting for gay rights. Thank you for posting this, Fairy.
I mentioned this in another post, but we can add Texas on the list of states seeking a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT to ban gay marriage.
