I've just been to the dog rescue centre
It's an old farmer that runs a rescue centre for German shepherds, and a farm museum. He's having an open day next weekend to raise money for cancer research, and I went along to help prepare a few things. I just thought you girls might like to see the pups that one of the rescue dogs had recently.

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
So this is a place in England for German Shepherd rescue? I love it. It's a no kill center i hope. As i breed and raised Shepherds for many years, and i know it's hard to place older dogs in homes!!! When you get past the 5 month mark, people start to shy away, as many of my dogs became "working dogs," some just were to shy. I adore animals. :)
The world needs more people like you! PS my female Shepherd is in the gallery, i do Pitbull rescue as well. Their pictures i took down, as i had to put one down. My other is very old now. :(
Nice center, good looking dogs, i hope they place!!!!

Awww what sweeties! Do they ever use any of them to train for police work?

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
The pups won't be a problem because they are healthy, happy and enjoying life. The other dogs are his personal favourites and live in the house with him. The saddest ones are the ones that have to be kept in cages and may never adjust to a life in a community.
btw - it's not me that does the rescue, I just went along to help a bit for his open day.

I'm confused by cages. You mean kennels?

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
Some of the ones that have been very badly treated are in cages outside (about half the size of a car garage). They have their own kennel inside, and they are let out for excercise of course. There isn't another way of keeping them because they are still potentially vicious and have to be excercised on their own.
Some of the ones that cannot be allowed into a home go to security firms.

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
I see. Yes a liability will follow these "vicious" older dogs. It's a tough judgement call at times. And a sad one, but anything that is humane for the animals and safe for the public works!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a VERY big and soft spot in my heart for German shepherds.
I have a German shepherd and I love her very dearly. Here's a pic of her with her Shetland sheepdog sister.

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
Not all of the dogs were treated badly, sometimes people will ask him to take over a dog if they are unable to look after it for some reason. This is George who is a big softie and loves people. He spent most of the time "helping" us and offering to check the sandwiches. :)

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
My parents had a Sherpherd when I was a tiny baby and he died when I was around two. He was HUGE and all black and a beautiful dog. People would always see him around me and get scared but he was SOOOO gentle and protective of me. He ended up dying when he was startled by some fireworks at the 4th of July and jumped up fast from a lying position. Apparently Sherpherd's have a stomach that can twist easily when they jump up like this (correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's true) and nobody knew it but he was dying. Poor boy. I think my parents have always wanted to get another Shepherd.

Yes Bunny,it's called bloat. It can happen to big breed dogs. It's when the dog's stomach turns on itself and pinches off the circulation from the esophagus and small intestine. It can only be corrected in the matter of being noticed in a few hours.Symptoms include vomiting and lethargy.I am very sorry to hear that.

George is one of the house dogs, so the whole farm is his home.

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
We had a pit pup a few years ago, and we got a bark collar for her, but for some reason, it wouldnt stop her from barking. It worked, because in the beginning when she barked, she would yelp, but it was like she didnt care or something.

Poor baby.My dogs learned within the first time they barked. They both yelped and I felt sooooo bad.:'(

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
Don't mean to sound dense...but what does a bark collar do?
I had a German Sheperd growing up...lived to be 15 years old...and missed very much. I would love to get another dog...but that won't happen too soon.
BTW...those pups were adorable!!! I sporatically volunteer at the local no-kill shelters. It's hard because if I had a big house and huge yard (horse farm) I would bring every single dog and cat home...LOL
But, I'm glad that those dogs are happy, healthy, and well-loved. ;D

Re: I've just been to the dog rescue centre
A bark collar sends a small shock to the dog's neck when the dog's vocal chords vibrate and activate the little electrodes on it.It prevents dogs from barking. To be honest,I put the collar on myself before trying it on the dogs.It was a little uncomfortable, that's all.It is more of a surprise, than it is painful.

Did you actually bark to test it out? I'm just picturing that and thinking it would be quite funny to see an attractive girl wearing a dog collar barking at herself trying to make it buzz or whatever it does.

Yes,I did.All I wanted to do was see how it felt so it would be fair to my babies.
