HELP! I'm a make up retard!
I have never really worn make up, just for special occasions and stuff. So I don't have much and I don't know how to apply it so that it looks well and blended. Usually just sweep something over my lids, put some eyeliner on and blush. Never anything more.
I am starting a new club in the beginning of Just, the opening is July 9th. I was thinking of gong to one of those stands in Macys and having them do my make up, watch them and just buy the stuff they use. I guess I should do this sooner? Do I need to wear foundation or do you think just concealer where needed is ok. I would like to do a smokey eye look so how should I go on my cheeks and lips? Lighter to off set the dark eyes? thats what my sister told me, but then I always liked deep lip colors like berry or something.
Anyone recomend any of the brands that they know are in Macys cosmetics department?
Thanks
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
If you are gonna work as a dancer, I would say find a MAC location (you can do a location search on their site) the colors are brighter and less granny like.
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
Don't worry hun, i have danced alot of years, i am a make-up retard too! BUT, i made great money. MAC products i found work well, but you still have to know how to apply them right? I have soooo many products just going stale. We have some ladies here who do make-up....IT looks great!!!!!
Me i stick with liner only, pink lips, with gloss....Done. Because i SUCK at make-up.
I have done heavy make-up before, it just looks goofy on me. I have had Avon, and Mary Kay people both come to my home in the past, it looks too made up for me.
Also MAC stays, i like that, but i really have no use to pay the price....I swear....I am make-up retarded too!!!! :)
But, don't worry too much sometimes a little goes a long way. Now when you're on stage, or in the dark club yes....you want more!
Imo just to wear lots of make-up to do it, it kinda strange. I see too many over made-up ladies around the clubs it really looks silly when they hit the dressing rooms and such.

Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
Oh hon, don't call yourself a "make-up retard." You're talking to the girl who jabbed herself in the eye with an eyeshadow applicator trying to put on eyeshadow. Everyone has their make-up boo-boos, and trends change what people think is OK in make-up application- watch some re-runs of 1980s TV shows to be horrified by slash-applied blush and horrible peach lipstick. Or look at old fashion magazines.
Anyhow, my personal favorite makeup guru is the late Kevin Aucoin, who had a great affection for women and believed that all women have a right to be beautified by make-up. He wrote some books that are widely available.
Identify your strong points and accentuate them. Pretty eyes? Play them up. Cute mouth? That too. Then minimize the things that bother you. I always use heavy concealer for skin breakouts, and then conceal that with shimmer powder. You can get away with a lot of creative make-up in a dimly lit club.
It is possible to teach one's self to apply perfect make-up- my sister was offered a sale job at a MAC boutique on the strength of what she was wearing on her face (Cover Girl, that she applied!) I was both proud and jealous of her.
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
you know hun if you do go to MAC (which i highly recmd) ask them to make you a face chart, basicly they will draw the makeup the same way they put it on you on a sheet whith "basic instructions" so you always have a "guide". also about the lips just remeber the darker the lipstick the SMALLER your lips look the lighter the lipstick the BIGGER They look! also if you choose to wear conceler i would suggest following up with foundation because conceler does not blend well (it is not made too just to cover up wear needed) but good luck you will do fine the minute you learn to apply it to your own liking you will be fine! hope that helps!
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
Don't worry, honey, you'll learn and it will be fun to play with different colors and shades.MAC is the best make up to go with, but it can get expensive. If you want to try something good quality and at better prices, try L'Oreal. You can get it at any drug stores. It is important to get good foundation, that will match your own skin tone, good (loose) powder to set it,and then good mascara (try doule extend). Then you can choose different shades for eye shadow and liners and blush.Judge on your hair color and eye color when doing that. Also it's important to get good make up brushes, they make a big difference in make up application. Good luck to you and ask more questions, please!
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
that is right i forgot about the importantce of GREAT brushes!!! you will need to invest about $100 for the basics like fountain, powder, eye shadow blender, and lip stick app. brushes, but beilve it when i say it will make the biggest differnce in the apperance of your makeup! iyt comes out perfectly!!!!!!
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
Kevion Aucoin's book "Making Faces" rocks. It is set up like a cook book: each page is a diferent "recepie" for the makeup shown in the picture: It first lists the makeup and equipment you will need, then gives detailed step-by-step instructions.
For really really simple beauty and makeup advice, try Bobbi Brown's books.
I would not recommend spending hundreds of dollars on makeup brushes. Go to a fancy beauty suply counter, get a really good look at thier bruses, even sketch them or trace them if you have to. Then go to Hobby Lobby or Michaels or one of those other craft-supply warehouse stores and buy the natural-bristle artists brushes. If you want more info, let me know and I will run down the brand names and sizes of all mine. (too tired to run upstairs and get them right now!)
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
well IMO the artist brushes are too stiff and they do not last as long as the makeup brushes but hey if it works for you why not right? just make sure that the hairs do not come out easily that is the main thing and clean them often
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
MAC is wonderful. Laura Mercier and Nars are also fabulous color lines. If your skin is in good condition then you should be able to get away with just concealer and setting powder. Make sure your concealer matches your skin well. If it's too dark you'll looked bruised and if it's too light it could glow under the black light.
In all honesty You can probaly continue to do the same make up routine if you're just a little more heavy handed with your application of the products. If you decide to do the smokey I always recommend sheer glossy lips with just a hint of tint on them and lightly bronzed cheeks.
A strong lip and nude colored eye lids with a lined upper lash line and tons of mascara is pretty too. Very 40's pin up girl glam. The make up artists at the counters should be able to help you, just make sure you go to line that is known for color. Clinique may have it all but the wear of thier color products as well as the intensity of the pigments suck.
I would agree with Lala's opion on brushes. The quality of the hair used for cosmetic brushes as well as how the bristles are cut make a huge difference on how the brush dispurses the pigment on the skin. I use MAC and Mercier brushes and that has been at least a $300 investment for me.
If you're not willing to fork over hundreds of dollars for a set of premium brushes now, start with the Sonia Kushik brushes availible at Target. They're very affordable and the quality isn't bad at all. Purchase the ones that are individually sold. Sometimes they sell them as sets in "travel" sizes, the price is a little cheaper but so is the quality. In the future as your Kushik brushes begin to shead and wear, you can replace them one at a time with luxery brushes.
Re: HELP! I'm a make up retard!
i agree iwth mia m, go get the Sonia Kushik brushes at target
tat is he only place that carries them)
i recomend MAC for eyeshadow and get the studi fix power/foundation combo for the club. its a little to heavy for daylight but looks great under the club lights. be carfeul with the studio fix beacuse i have heard some girls break out, i personaly never have and i have oily skin
I also recomend NARS for blush, it is the only kind i have ever used that has not looked streaky on me.
