i started like you and I was intimidated. The first was wrapping my right leg around the pole and simply spinning around. Try that first.
Are you flexable? Jumping into the splits always looks impressive either that or shouldering your leg against the pole. These are only easy if your already flexable though,
x
hmm...i think my first one was the right leg on pole and spinning. either that or sliding down it(lol yep...took me awhile to get used to the pole)
I did the spinning thing first, too. Check out and look under free pole trick. I think that's pretty much the easiest thing you can do. I came in before my club opened and practiced that. My arms felt like they were gonna fall off for the next 48 hours.
My first trick was actually kinda advanced for a newbie. I grabbed the pole and jumped onto it high enough and wrapped my legs around it tightly then let go with my hands and hung upside down from it and touched myself as I slowly slid down. :)
^ show off!! just kidding. thats pretty impressive. me, i didnt know the first thing about dancing or the pole. i took a running leap , jumped at the pole and held on for dear life. i eventually got better but they teased me for along time about "attacking the pole".
A really good resource for learning the pole is a book called The S-Factor by Sheila Kelley. It has a lot of the basic pole moves and also has some more advanced ones. She also has a dvd specifically for pole work. Honestly, i would reccomend getting a pole installed at your home. A brass one is about $200 and you can install it yourself. If thats not a possiblility, this sounds weird, but go to a park or playground. All elementary school playgrounds have tetherball poles and other various metal poles. They're about the same size and that way you can practice, practice, practice. Good luck! Oh yeah and don't wear long pants when practicing, it makes it a lot more slick, and don't wear any lotion! Have fun!
LOL i wonder how many strange looks you'll get if you go to a playground to do pole tricks
hahaha this is funny but i went to hte playground last night w/my roomie!! it was about 11 and i hid whenever a car went by haha
so i have the S factor book, its pretty good but im thinking about getting the dvd because its hard to understand written instructions with minimal pictures.
another question - when u climb the pole (i tried to follow instruction in the S factor book) is it more in the arms or the legs? i just could not do it for the life of me!!!!
legs, you grip them with your legs and just pull yourself up with the arms
Legs, definitely legs.
The first time I climbed a pole I tried using my arms. I looked... is patheti-sad a word?
