A lot of unestablished photographers will do TFP/TFCDs with models till they've built up a portfolio and a reputation.
what do the photographers charge
what are tfp
You need to do more research.
TFP is Time For Prints. Where you provide your time as a model for free in exchange for prints of the shoot (all prints). TFCDs is the same as TFP except you gain a CD of whole shoot instead of prints. Sometimes they have model release forms this type of shoot, sometimes they don't.
Inexperienced photographers will gladly do TFP/TFCDs. Experienced photographers may charge a nominal fee to produce your portfolio or you can probably work out a deal that s/he can have copyright of the photos (therefore be able to use them as s/he pleases) in exchange for allowing you to use the photos (prints or CD) in your portfolio (therefore no charge to do the shoot as the photographer can sell the prints/photos to make money).
It is best to just do TFP/TFCDs until you feel you have gained enough experience (and a healthy portfolio) to charge. That is what I have done.

TFCD seems to be the way to go right now. I shoot 90 to 120 pics in 3 hours, and give the girl a Kodak Easy Share CD. The cd works like a regular cd-rom...very easy! They only cost $3.27 per cd; soo the cost to either is small! I try to shoot the girl in 5 or 6 different outfits and some nudes, for variety. garageglamour.com is a site I belong to. Its like MM, but, since it, GG, was the first one I saw, thats the one I belong to. As far as charging...YOU have to figure out what your time is worth. For Gods sake, don't UNDERCHARGE!!!!!
If you're just getting started, there's no telling what you'll charge or what you can charge. Very few people make really good money being a photographer.
Online galleries are full of bright amateurs or semiprofessionals who are happy to shoot and advance their art with TFP/TFCDs. If you want to charge models to shoot porfolios, you better have invested in a decent studio, decent lighting, decent equipment, have hours of training and practice under your belt. Then you can start doing the really fun and artistic stuff (but at least profitable) like weddings and senior pictures.
