Cultural Assimilation dispute breaks out at the ol' ball game
Very interesting. I'm kind of torn on this one, although I think the coach blaming his team losing on account of this is kind of sour grapes.

In a balkanized country, one should expect these things.

Good for the umpire. America speaks English, and the constantly increasing use of Spanish by people who know English is somewhat annoying. The Coach however is just trying to find a reason to bitch.
Re: Cultural Assimilation dispute breaks out at the ol' ball game
The coaches comment about demoralizing his team smacks of sour grapes, but is to cover up his own stupidity . I am in the same area and have heard extensively from other little-league umpires from the same leauge. There is no "English-only" rule in baseball, nor can there be. The third base coach instructs the batter on what to do with hand signals. The catcher tells the pitcher what to throw with hand signals. None of these are in English. Baseball is not played in English or there could not be a little-league World series. Umpires signal balls and strikes and safe and out with hand gestures.
The umpire was dead wrong, and stupid to boot. The other coach was dead wrong for not filing an immediate protest with the umpire.
"There is no crying in baseball."

Why is this such a big deal? Little league is a privelege not a right. Why is it so hard to try to make things fair for all players? If they let players speak a language that is not considered an American language (yes I realize there is no offical language in America) why give them an unfair advantage? Would it be ok to have teams wired with wireless mikes and earpieces to tip off pitches, bark out strategy, or other such things?
It just goes to show the sad state of our country where something as little as this makes bigger headlines than the case of the teeball coach paying one of his players to bean his own teammate to get him out of the game simply because he was not as good as the rest. () I mean that is a much more revolting story. But in this PC America we are living in its considered worse to offend a group of minority Little Leaguers than to physically endanger the life of one child. Seems like we, as a country, have our priorities seriously out of whack.
