Weekend Commentary ... "... we have awakened a sleeping Tiger ..."
with implied reference to the famous 1941 quote from Admiral Yamamoto in this Middle East Times op-ed ...
(snip)"... Indeed, jihadis have been killing for a decade in the name of Islam. They killed innocent tourists and natives in Morocco and Egypt, in Africa, in Indonesia and in Yemen, all done in the name of Islam by Muslims who say that they are better than all other Muslims. They killed in India, in Thailand and are now talking of killing in Germany and Denmark and so on. There were attacks with bombs that killed scores inside Shia and Sunni mosques, inside churches and inside synagogues in Turkey and Tunisia, with Muslim preachers saying that it is okay to kill Jews and Christians - the so called infidels.
Above all, it is the Muslim mind that is on fire.
The Muslim fundamentalist who attacked the Dutch film director Theo Van Gogh in the Netherlands, stabbed him more than 23 times then cut his throat. He recently proudly proclaimed at his trial: "I did it because my religion - Islam - dictated it and I would do it again if were free." Which preacher told this guy this is Islam? That preacher should be in jail with him.
Do the cowardly jihadis who recruit suicide bombers really think that they will force the US Army and British troops out of Iraq by killing hundreds of innocent Iraqis? US troops now have bases and operate in Iraq but also from Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Oman.
The only accomplishment of jihadis is that now they have aroused the great "Western Tiger". There was a time when the United States and Europe welcomed Arab and Muslim immigrants, visitors and students, with open arms. London even allowed all dissidents escaping their countries to preach against those countries under the guise of political refugees.
Well, that is all over now. Time has become for the big Western vengeance.
Visas for Arab and Muslim young men will be impossible to get for the United States and Western Europe. Those working there will be expelled if they are illegal, and harassed even if their papers are in order.
Airlines will have to right to refuse boarding to passengers if their names even resemble names on a prohibited list on all flights heading to Europe and the United States.
What is more important to remember is this: When the West did unite after World War II to beat communism, the long Cold War began without pity. They took no prisoners. They all stood together, from the United States to Norway, from Britain to Spain, from Belgium to Switzerland. And they did bring down the biggest empire. Communism collapsed.
I fear those naīve Muslims who think that they are beating the West have now achieved their worst crime of all. The West is now going to war against not only Muslims, but also, sadly, Islam as a religion.
In this new cold and hot war, car bombs and suicide bombers here and there will be no match for the arsenal that those Westerners are putting together - an arsenal of laws, intelligence pooling, surveillance by satellites, armies of special forces and indeed, allies inside the Arab world who are tired of having their lives disrupted by demented so-called jihadis or those bearded preachers who, under the guise of preaching, do little to teach and much to ignite the fire, those who know little about Islam and nothing about humanity. And today the Tiger roars in French ...
"France ejects 12 Islamic 'preachers of hate'
By Colin Randall in Paris
(Filed: 30/07/2005)
The gulf between British and French treatment of preachers of hatred and violence was thrown sharply into focus yesterday when France announced the summary expulsion of a dozen Islamists between now and the end of August.
A tough new anti-terrorism package was unveiled by Nicolas Sarkozy, the interior minister and a popular centre-Right politician.
His proposals reflect French determination to act swiftly against extremists in defiance of the human rights lobby, which is noticeably less vocal in France than in Britain.
Imams and their followers who fuel anti-western feeling among impressionable young French Muslims will be rounded up and returned to their countries of origin, most commonly in France's case to its former north African colonies.
Mr Sarkozy also revealed that as many as 12 French mosques associated with provocative anti-western preaching were under surveillance. Imams indulging in inflammatory rhetoric will be expelled even if their religious status is recognised by mainstream Muslim bodies.
Those who have assumed French citizenship will not be protected from deportation. Mr Sarkozy said he will reactivate measures, "already available in our penal code but simply not used", to strip undesirables of their adopted nationality. "We have to act against radical preachers capable of influencing the youngest and most weak-minded," Mr Sarkozy told the French daily Le Parisien.
The first to be caught in the new round of expulsions is an Algerian, Rena Ameuroud, whose brother Abderraham was jailed in France earlier this year for his part in a jihadist training exercise in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris. He faces immediate deportation for allegedly urging fellow-worshippers at a Parisian mosque to engage in "holy war".
At least seven French nationals are now known to have been killed while fighting with anti-coalition insurgents in Iraq, in some cases as suicide bombers, the minister said. A further 10 are believed still to be there. France, which has Europe's largest Muslim population with estimates varying from five to nine million out of a population of 60 million, has long prided itself on its stern approach to terrorism.
Mr Sarkozy's crackdown on those "promoting radical Islamist polemic" was disclosed at the end of a week that began with French anger at Britain's failure to extradite the alleged financier of Islamist bombings in Paris in the mid-1990s. Rachid Ramda, 35, an Algerian, has been held for 10 years while fighting attempts to return him to stand trial. Survivors and victims' relatives who gathered this week at the St Michel station in the heart of Paris to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the worst attack, which killed eight, called on Britain to "stop protecting" Ramda.
They are unimpressed by his supporters' claims that he is a "gentle and peaceful" man who devotes his time in the Belmarsh top-security jail in south-east London to learning the Koran by heart, studying English literature and comforting other Muslim prisoners. Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, has approved Ramda's extradition - as did his predecessor David Blunkett - but his removal depends on High Court proceedings.
French ministers and commentators have long expressed exasperation at British handling of individuals who support terrorism, arguing that greater emphasis is being placed on their human rights rather than on security interests."
Re: Weekend Commentary ... "... we have awakened a sleeping Tiger ..."
I was just going to post that article Melonie. Over here in Paris, they take an extraordinarily aggressive approach to issues like this... Very different from the Anglo-Saxon culture / approach. I read posts here from Americans (I'm American also) who are outraged at human rights abuses / police abuses of power in the US/UK. I wonder what they'd think if I took them on a tour of the Paris metro on any given day of the week! They put up with ZERO potential bs. I also used to live in Singapore. Damn have I got a story. Anyway, let's just say I've never seen any crime there.
Re: Weekend Commentary ... "... we have awakened a sleeping Tiger ..."
Mel: That was a great article. I fully expected, as did many americans, a full scale mobilization after Sept 11, 2001. Something like after Pearl Harbor.
Instead we have a war where the volunteer military does the fighting, and eighty per cent of us out of the big cities in more rural areas are not effected at all by the "War on Terror."
The only time I come into contact with the War on terror is when I fly from an airport.
Out here in "pretend rural land and Suburbia Inc." there does not appear to be a war on terror.
As a realist, I expect that another incident, (which a pray will not occur) will cause the
full mobilization of american society.

As a fellow realist, given the strength of liberal publicity and the success of bogus accusations such as BWG 'lying' in order to invade Iraq, my guess is that nothing short of a 1/4 mile wide crater and 100,000 US civilian casualties would result in full mobilization of American society.

I agree that a first hand experience with Paris or Cologne or Antwerp or Milan police would open a lot of British and American eyes.

It's really sucks that America has to compromise it's safety in fear of people crying "racist" bullshit. :(

No, what really sucks is seeing just how quickly Americans are willing to trash the Constitution when the going gets tough... ironically, the only time the damned thing's worth anything and, of course, one of the primary reasons for its existence.

Preach it brother! Preach it! Testify!
People are all worried about them making new laws and shit - well - they don't enforce most of the laws anyhow (especially when it comes to the border, expired visas, background checks, etc.) ... oh, unless you actually are AN AMERICAN CITIZEN ... then you catch all kinds of bullshit.
Re: Weekend Commentary ... "... we have awakened a sleeping Tiger ..."
it would appear that the Brits are finally waking up to the issue as well ..
(snip)"This segment of a mainly peaceful and productive immigrant population hasn't escaped the attention of those political actors whose traditional antipathy toward blacks is being transferred to the largely unassimilated Muslim community. The far-right British National Party is trying to exploit the home-grown terrorist threat by calling for immigration controls and distributing literature using a photograph of the bombed London bus with the caption, "Maybe it's time to start listening to the BNP."
Today's xenophobic right is more than a nuisance because it's fishing in an increasingly well-stocked pond of grievances. Before 7/7 working-class whites living in heavily Muslim parts of London, and in cities such as Bradford, Leeds, and Luton, voiced the complaint that, on their streets at least, one sees far more burqas than Bobbies. A pervasive cultural apartheid encourages a majority of surveyed whites to believe Muslims are more loyal to fellow Muslims outside of the U.K. than to their fellow Britons.
Some extreme right-wing groups have even joined forces with well-organized soccer hooligans in a coordinated campaign to exact physical revenge upon the Muslim community. British police have recorded over 1,200 suspected anti-Muslim incidents in the past three weeks. Last Friday, for example, a Muslim-owned store in a Leeds suburb was set ablaze and the police evacuated one of London's largest mosques following a bomb threat.
Since July 7, the Blair government's response has been surprisingly measured. Yet, both the police and Blair's conservative opponents, firmly backed by public opinion, tug in the direction of sacrificing additional freedoms for the illusion of certain security.
Among Londoners, fear and frustration are starting to replace stoicism as the most common responses to their new reality. Callers to British talk radio reflect a growing populist sentiment that's both anti-civil liberties and anti-immigrant. If, in the coming days, Blair's actions appear insufficient against domestic terror, his countrymen's legendary stiff upper lip may yet turn into an ugly, authoritarian-minded scowl."

Ah ... nice choice... fascism or terrorism...
Or people will simply accept a war has been thrust upon them and they need to figure out how to fight this one in new ways.
Re: Weekend Commentary ... "... we have awakened a sleeping Tiger ..."
The United States has always been founded upon (and a reflection of) the old Roman concept of public order. (See Preamble and statement "insure Domestric Tranquility").
Now say you come across a religion that refuses to assimilate into American society, and whose members subscribe to a theoretical higher ideal of the religion, rather than the
reciprocal duties of the american to being a citizen and member of our order of society.
Peraps it is time for a civil war in the Mideast to either establish the true meanings is Islam
rather than it's pactice as advocated by the Nazi Islamists. This will either cleanse Islam of
its self correcting Jihad mechanism (which acts against any moderization or change in some of its doctrines and actual practice), or will sort out the true meaning of this religion so that we will be able to more clearly identify the enemy of scientific progress and the enlightenment as zealot Islamists practice it.
It is time ladies and gentlemen to find out who the enemy is, and get rid of the double talk
coming from the apologists for the Islamists.
The history of the United States government is that it will jail its opponents, for years if necessary without trial. No, I am not referring to Guantanamo Bay. I am referring to
Lincolns arrest and imprisonment for five years of rebel sympathizaers in US army detention camps fom 1861-1866. Lincoln made it a little more formal by declaring he was doing this during time of armed rebellion to the authority of the United States. The prededent was set and remains. None of this is new stuff. It is in fact old stuff.
The trick is to re establish civil order and democracy after the emergency has passed.
Andrew Jackson just hung civiliians, (after giving them a military trial). This was before he was elected President. Seems in the history books to of enhanced his reputation.
He also hanged a few when he was elected president.
All depends how much the threat to public order and safety becomes. There is a company that builds jails. Wonder what their stock is trading at?

well the Brits are no longer just 'thinking about it'
and with typical British aplomb ...
(snip)"British Transport Police have been targeting specific ethnic groups for "intelligence-led" stop-and-searches as part of their heightened security measures.
BTP Chief Constable Ian Johnston said that his officers would not "waste time searching old white ladies".

Maybe on this subject the supreme court SHOULD take example from other country's legal tactics.

I don't know how anyone can argue with these measures after what we have witnessed all over the globe regarding suicide bombers and terrorists....but that's just me.
If that started here in America Al Sharpton would be all over it like the freak he is. He loves to rant about hate crimes, discrimination, etc...but where was he when a white women was brutally murdered on Long Island in New York??...:O PC America burns my ass.....
WHITE PLAINS - The fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old white woman at a Westchester County mall will be prosecuted as a hate crime because the suspect said "he wanted to kill a white person," District Attorney Jeanine Pirro said yesterday.
Phillip Grant, 43, who is black, was indicted yesterday on charges of murder as a hate crime, murder and possession of a weapon in the June 29 killing of Concetta Russo-Carriero in the parking garage of the Galleria Mall in White Plains.
In a 45-minute tape played at a court hearing earlier this month, Grant told police that he was fighting a race war and killed the woman because she was white.
"All I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die," he said, adding that she "was not an innocent victim - because she was white."

Huh. According to Jesse Jackson and that crowd, it is impossible for a black person to be racist. It just can't be done.

Yeah, imagine that...mind boggling huh? ::)
Racism exists in EVERY nationality, and it always will. But there are ways to handle it if the situation is truely of racist nature. It's like the old saying about "crying wolf"....I could say "hello, how are you" to someone and be labeled a racist in todays society.

Not to fan a non-PC fire, but IMHO a black person is entirely capable of being racist when, for example, he accepts admission to a college even though his test scores were lower than other persons of a different race who were denied admission to the same college. There seems to be a very obvious double standard regarding the use of the term 'racism' depending on which race happens to be benefitting and which race happens to be denied equal treatment.
