Horrible... horrible crime
A nine year old girl is kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Left bottomless, face down in the mud.
The fiend is twice convicted of the crime is sentenced to death!
But on the second appeal some "activist" judge commutes his death sentence to life. He escapes execution.
Cut off his balls we say!!! Little pedophile murdering pervert! The guards wanted to send him up to paint the gas chamber he would be killed in.
Then DNA evidence comes out... and proves he wasn't the one who did it.
The story of Kurt Bloodsworth - one of hundreds of innocent men who's conviction of rapes they never did were over-turned.
If we let our zeal in punishment go unchecked in these cases, there would be a lot of people getting their ball sacks sewed back on.

Sympathetic as I may be towards Mr. Bloodsworth, I'd like to see some stats on the rest and comparisons to stats on other crimes. As the esteemed Paul Harvey used to say, "And now... for the rest of the story."
84% of all rapes go unreported.
The rate of false reports is 2-3%, the same for other felony crimes.
Only one in three reports results in an arrest.
Where the accused assailant was released pre-trial, in half the cases he did not have to post bond.
In cases where there was an arrest, only 46% end in conviction. The rates for murder is 69% and other felonies 54%.
After conviction, 55% of rapists spend time in prison. 24% do only their time in the local jail and 21% are released.
So let's do some math, shall we? From The National Center for Victims of Crime an estimated 683,000 women are forcibly raped every year. Only 16% (109,280) will report it. Approximately one in three (36,427) reports will result in an arrest. There will be 16,757 convictions; 9216 rapists will do hard time, 4022 will be let go with time served (during trial) and 3519 of rapists will do no time at all.
If we're looking at the comparative dangers of being a man versus being a woman, Deogol, I think I like your odds better.

Come again? I do believe I have adequately and mathematically demonstrated that overzealous punishment is not precisely the problem.
Re: Horrible... horrible crime
We are both saying the same thing, the system isn't working.
I am also saying that people should be continued to be given the benefit of the doubt - but they definitely should still be locked up until they can find a line of reasoning to free them. It like "Sorry bubba, you may indeed by innocent, but right now it just is not looking that way. I certainly do hope something shows up in the future that breaks this line of reasoning that got you put in here."
I am telling this story to warn those who would want to serve up physical punishments there may be a day of atonement should such a thing happen to an innocent person.
If you want to go on about crime statistics and being a male meaning being safer - I think you should expand your examination. There are many more male victims of crimes than female victims of crimes.
() for some reading material.

You're backpedalling. You posted a thread about "hundreds" of innocent men being locked up for rape charges because of overzealous punishment; I countered with hundreds of thousands of rapists going free. If you wanted a thread about all crimes worldwide then you would have posted that in the first place.

Um I don't think I am backpedalling.
Your stat's are because women are not reporting the crime and following up with prosecution.
I am saying men are getting fucked over in general. Sorry you read it that way.
