Why does the news media always reminds of bad things?
I have been watching and reading everything on the Space Shuttle's return to flight, because I love it and wish they would just build new ones. I think they could come up with new ways to keep the belly of it cool other than the way it is now. Anyway back to the reason for this post. I'm so sick and tired of the media always bring up in every story that..........."A hole in Columbia's left wing, left there by a large chunk of flyaway fuel-tank foam, led to the spacecraft's destruction during re-entry on Feb. 1, 2003. All seven astronauts were killed". AP News
I know it happened, I seen it happen, why do they have to keep reminding me of it? Can't they just let the people who love this thing just be happy and enjoy it?

Bad news sells papers/gets ratings/etc... In this issue, throw a rock and you'll hit someone who's guilty. If good news got peoples butts in front of the TV or got them buying the latest issue of Time magazine, you bet your ass they'd be on the lookout for the latest spelling bee winner or down at the youth center or stuff like that.
Re: Why does the news media always reminds of bad things?
After we got men to land on the moon during Apollo 11, public interest in the space program declined significantly. Does anyone even remember who was on Apollo 12? Then Apollo 13 had their accident, and the media was suddenly interested again. Then we had four more successful missions to the moon that nobody remembers.
This process repeated itself with the Space Shuttle. It was new and exciting at first, but after awhile the novelty wore off.
Then the Challenger blew up. Most television stations in fact didn't even carry the ill-fated Challenger launch live because space shuttle missions had become so routine. The same thing repeated itself with the Columbia disaster.

So what were saying here is that the public in general becomes more interested in failures which result in loss of life rather then achievment - its sad isnt it . A bit off topic but remember when any of the troop lives were lost it was all over the front pages of the papers and news etc - now I just see it on the world page not really big news anymore . Makes you feel a little ashamed of your own mankind in general .Is it just human nature to feed off of negativity ?

It sells more copy. People want bad news to tell them how good they have it compared to others!
Re: Why does the news media always reminds of bad things?
Most people are "rubberneckers' and love tragedy (ever notice cars slow on a highway past a crash on THE OTHER SIDE?)
And we're cheap...the shuttles could have been alot more affordable, safe and effective but that would have cost more up front.
Re: Why does the news media always reminds of bad things?
It's sad. And, I'm with you. However, it seems that tragedy is what makes news. You never hear about anything good anymore. It's always news about tragedy, whether it be war, missing children, accidents, sports (hockey- damn them!) and all the other bad news they can flood the circuits with.
I vote for a Happy channel. LOL..
Re: Why does the news media always reminds of bad things?
Notice that "THEY" are still not telling us what is going on in the world. Millions and millions of dollars spent on the young white teen girl in Araba by the "The Missing White Child Channel" aka Fox...
And the other's aren't so great either.
It is the same four or five stories over and over... I sense a cluelessness amongst the American People.

Maybe someone from AP read this because the latest story does not have that paragraph in it.
