I should preface by saying that for the most part, I still live with my (overbearingly protective Jewish) parents, because I go to college in town and the little time I have to work does not pay enough for me to afford my own housing.
My mother was using my computer for something, and happened to stumble on...guess where? SW. She was not thrilled. I however told her I would not discuss it at the moment, and instead, wrote her and my father a letter.
This is what I said:
I do not feel that it is my duty to explain all my motives for this, however I am willing to give you an explanation, if that is what you want.
I need to gain financial autonomy, and I need to do this quickly. While we have all been working in this direction since I graduated high school, and this has gotten me nowhere. We end up in a self-defeating cycle, and I can see myself remaining in it indefinitely. These baby steps are not working, and what I need for myself and for my sanity right now is a place of my own, and some independence, and, most importantly: privacy. This is something that--as has been proven to me multiple times--I cannot achieve at home. I cannot afford this kind of freedom with my fifteen hour a week university job, and while I'm sure working a full-time job and going to school full-time is possible, I can see myself burning out quickly.
I am, however, willing to endure social stigma in order to gain the autonomy I need, and I have been considering looking into a job at a strip club a few nights a week. This is not something I felt I needed to share with you right away, as I am still doing extensive research. Stripperweb is a forum for exotic dancers, and I had signed up in order to ask a few questions, talk to some girls, and just generally observe.
None of this is part of my "problems", as you so delicately put it, but simply a way I am considering in order to gain the kind of life I seek, and to stop this cycle of "let's get you ready to go out in the world unless we feel you can't".
All of your preconceptions about dancing are just that: preconceptions. If you really want to understand what's going on, perhaps you could look at the issue more thoroughly before they make instantaneous judgments. Stripping is a legal, legitimate job, and it is just that, a job. Nothing more. If I decide to take this path, I will do it on my own if need be, and you can either support me or not.
Thank you for the cheese sandwich.
...Don't ask about the cheese sandwich. Anyway, my parents now see my point, and realise that they don't have any control over me any more in this matter. We had a very civilised discussion, and while they are not exactly thrilled that I want to do this, I feel this is a big step for me.
I have to say Jenny, a better worded letter on this type of topic I never could have imagined. You're handling this with dignity, class, and brains. Whatever your decision will be regarding dancing or anything for that matter, I know you will have nothing but success in these endeavors. You're one cool cat.
How funny. Just make sure the club caries some Manischewitz for you to drink while you're working. Actually, on second thought, I wouldn't wish that stuff on my worst enemies, so never mind. :)Quote:

Welcome, Jenny! Glad the parental notification went well.
That's an awesome letter Jenny. I'm glad you and your parents were able to discuss this in a healthy way. Congrats!

I actually like Manischewitz wine. In very very small doses like the little cups they give you when you toast L'Chaim at the end of temple.Quote:
