to tattoo or not to tattoo
I've been wanting to get a tattoo for a while now but I still have yet to make the leap. Unlike a piercing which can heal on its own, a tattoo would be permanent. Although tattoos have been gaining mainstream acceptance, there still is a stigma associated with having one among the general population. If I do get around to getting one, it would be able to be covered by a tshirt. I'm wondering how many out there find tattoos on guys a turn off.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
Tatoos on men is one of my biggest turn ons i love tats. Its personall decion to get one or not but i perosnally see no reason not to. Have with it. :)

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I love tats on a guy shows he can put up with pain ...might able to put up with my shish.
The only thing that would be a turn off is: gang tats, scary tats (like murder tats etc.) and just racists tats.
Everything is pretty cool even if it is controversial. Go to the best guy in town might be more but youll get great work most likely. Ask around when you see peoples tats n such. Dont know if you have a place picked out yet.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I have an idea of what I want and I know exactly where I would go to get it. It's arguably the most expensive place in town but for something that will be on me forever, I might as well go to the best.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I don't think they are a turn on but a lot of girls do.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
Tattoos of a band around a mans arm are always a turn on,and nobody will see it under a shirt. Also an idea for you,get a temporary henna tattoo and see if you like how that looks first before getting the permanent one.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I love ink on men! Yummeh. But I'm have a huge hangup when it comes to what and why... I always, ALWAYS ask why someone got the image that they chose. "Cause its cool" or "Cause it looked good" doesnt cut it. C'mom, how about a lil meaning behind it? ::)

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I would say that a tattoo is a bad idea. I just think that guys don't like them. And as I recall, someone, somewhere said that the richer the guy is the less he likes tattoos - i agree 100%. I highly doubt that a tattoo will make you more money, and I'm sure that it will make you less. But of course, if this is something you've wanted forever, and has a very special meaning you shouldn't listen to chumps like me.
take it from someone who got tattooed before she turned 18 and now regrets it bitterly. Obviously this has nothing to do with your age, but don't get it if you're not sure! Please!

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
Whatever you pick, make it meaningful (heritage, tribal, family name, etc.) because you'll regret a dopey "joke" tattoo. I have a few I'm waiting to get (post-dance years.) I have two on my scalp, under my hair (like the treasure map on the movie "Blackbeard" LOL)
They ARE addictive. Yesterday I had to resist a sudden urge to get another one!
Also remember tatttoos need special care & touch-ups....they can get expensive.
I'm a fan of armband tats on diesel biceps. Just my suggestion.....

First of all, this is a guy. Second of all, just because you're bitter about getting something silly tattooed on your body doesn't mean everybody is. I (also a man) am very attached to both of my tattoos for my own reasons. I'm going to get a third one of these days. My wife has four tattoos and I really like them. I really like tattoos on women, so there goes your theory about guys not liking them.
Fact is, if someone wants ink they should get it. But they should make sure they want it first. Don't do anything permanent on a whim.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
Yes if you like the tat, by all means get it. But as to your inquiry, I personally find guys without tattoos alot sexier.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
The only opinion that matters is your own. You're the one who has to wear it. You seem to want it badly enough, have it figured out, and know what you're thinking, you don't need the extra push. If it's important for you, get it done. Mine are special to me. Make it special to you. If yu like it, who cares if it turns other people on?

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I love tats on men and women.. I appreciate the art of it.. I like bright bold pieces... Im working on a piece for my back... its going to be a cover up of a crappy "on a whim" lower back tat. But the thing is the one Im covering has meaning.. I dont hate it Ive just grown away from it... (if that makes any sense)
EVERYONE tells me not to do it... but I dont care... if you want one DO IT! If someone is going to look at me differently because I have a big tat on my back good riddance... and thats all I have to say about that!

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
what tattoo do you want to get, if you don't mind my asking? do you have a pic?
and do you like women with tattoos? because in my experience, they are the most open to men with tattoos.... usually a conversation starter, too!

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
Example of work on male:
It does hella hurt too! I was making Popeye faces when the tattoo artist wasn't looking. You better really like/want what you get.

As someone who has apprenticed as a tattoo artist (Purple Panther in Hollywood, CA) and has quite the collection herself, I'd say no no no to this suggestion.
Granted, you should make it meaningful, but TRIBAL???
No offense, but tribal is REALLY trendy, and you'll end up regretting it.
Names are the #1 thing people come into tattoo shops to get covered. It's never a good idea to get a name tattooed on you (unless it's your kid's)!!!
Kanjii- japanese words- another tattoo idea that's gone trendy and bad. That's probably in 2nd place for tattoos people get removed/covered, after that is looney toons characters.
Your best bet is to design something yourself! Something that has always been a favorite thing of yours, and meaningful to you. When you go to the tattoo shop, definitly look for cleanliness first, but just as important- look at your artist's portfolio.
If your tattoo artist has Kanjii/tribal/looney toons in his book- DON'T GET A TATTOO BY HIM/HER! This is a sign of an inexperienced artist, or one who is just not very good. Look for artists with original pieces, and also look at the style they prefer to work in. If your tattoo idea is simmilar to their style, they can pull it off better than, say, if you want a portrait done by an old skool artist.
(I mean, you wouldn't expect picasso to be able to perfectly duplicate the mona lisa, would you?)
Most importantly of all- design your own tattoo! Keep it original! If you like dragons and can't draw one, ask a friend, or the tattoo artist to draw it for you. There is nothing worse (in my opinion) than having the same tattoo as a hundred or more other people.
Oooh.. and one more thing- make sure that you get something that you can easily integrate into a bigger piece. Tattoos are like potato chips.. you can't get just one }:D

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
Oh, and I think tattoos are VERY sexy. I won't sleep with a guy unless he has at least one ;) Personal preference, tho ^_^

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I got my tattoos in the corps, which was cool there quite a few people had them. But now that I am in the civvie world I hate my tattoos. Everyone has them. My own mother got one, tattoos are no longer for the cool, the rebels, and the cold hearted murderers. They are also for soccer moms.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I live by the same philosophy as Dave Mustaine. When he was asked if he would ever get a tattoo he replied "Never, you don’t put a bumper sticker on a Mercedes-Benz"
In my opinion, the tattoo thing has gotten a bit out of hand, it seems like almost everyone has one now. It looks great on a few people, but on the rest, it just doesn't "fit" the person.

LOL tired of seeing tribal on lower backs too? I'm a tattoo critic, when someone says, "im getting some tribal around my arm/on my lower back" I look at them and say, "oh how original, I'm sure that you will just happen to start a trend and everyone will have them.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
I like that Dave Mustaine quote!
However, I like tats on guys, as long as they're reasonable, meaningful, and not lame. It really does depend on the guy though- we'd have to see a pic of you in order to judge if you'd suit it.

I agree. It's totally become a fad, just like when I used to pierce my ears multiple times in the 80's. I'm not saying they never look good because often they do and god knows everyone seems to have one, but I'm not a big fan of tattoos on men. My boyfriend has one and I do not like it.

Re: to tattoo or not to tattoo
JumbliesMan: how was I supposed to know it was a guy? there's no mention of it!
And besides, if you read my post carefully you'll notice that I said it was ok to get a tattoo that is meaningful and long-awaited
Argh!
