This picked my curiosity so I was wondering....how many of you when you were newbies (or still are) knew/know pole tricks? If you did, how did you know? Did you get a video and train? If you didn't know, how long did it take you to learn?

Get yourself an x-pole and a DVD - even thought the other girls at your club might teach you it's always good to have a pole at home to practice with.
exoticdancelessons.com by fawnia is a great resource.
I watched friends and went in early for my shifts the first week so that I could practice. After that I would do my first song of every set on the pole until I got comfortable with it and learned more tricks.
Dang. She did not ask about poles, she asked about learning pole tricks. I wll never buy a pole from PS. They 're so busy on here promoting themselves instead of getting their orders straight.
Really. There's no point in spending hundreds when you can buy and make your own pole. It's called a hardware store...Quote:

When I started it only took a couple weeks of practice to master a couple basic pole tricks. You just have to trust yourself and not be scared to fall.. Ive smacked my head a couple of times over the years - Ive been dancing 5 years now and still screw up once in a while...
they changed it to exoticdanceschool.com i just got the polework dvd in the mail today. it's awesome. she goes over each trick and different variations several times each trick. i got it so quickly too. i've got a lllooonngggg way to go though. ;D
what are some basic pole tricks???????? i only know how to spin on it and slowly come down
The first I learned was pulling myself upside down with my arms... where you kick your legs up then spread your legs holding on with your arms and slowly lower yourself back down.. it looks touch but took a couple tries to get it.
The secord I learned was shimmying up the pole and making it look somewhat not gorilla like... then letting go with my hands... using only my legs to hold myself upside down...
I later taught myself to slide down a little upside down then hoist myself back upto grab on with my hands and do the first trick again by flipping BACK up and sliding down...
This sounds and looks hard to do but once you have the 2 parts down its easy to figure out lots of pole tricks...
I now dont do them unless its crowded because i get horrible bruises on my calves from the 2nd trick. They dont hurt just look ugly...
Both of these were learned within a month of dancing... I just took to the pole like a monkey takes to a tree... hehe...
Fawnia here... my website has changed: ;D
I did pole classes for ages... and now I am a dancer... I know at my pole school you can get private lessons where they teach you on the poles in your club...but a few of the other girls have asked me to show them some pole tricks and its easy to learn off the others...
I didn't start doing pole tricks until 2 years after dancing. Just get the basics down and you'll figure out differet variations on them
I was a customer at a club for the first time last night and I was AMAZED by the pole tricks, only about 1/5 of the girls did them, and really it was kinda sad cuz none of the guys seemed to care, but I was like WOW, these chicks have TALENT!!
I don't really think I have the upper body strength to do a lot of the stuff i saw, and I'm so clumsy I can't imagine doing all that stuff in those giant heels. But we'll see, maybe I'll surprise myself.
When I started dancing I had never done pole or dance in my life. I'm completely self taught and I subscribe to the motto of 'throw yourself at a pole and hope ya stick'
Seriously though just watch what other girls do and copy. Don't get disheartened if you cant just try to copy the movements until you build up your strength. if you don't feel comfortable with the shoes, take them off. If no one does pole well at your club there are alot of DVDs available on the web.
If you want to see some crazy ass shit you have to check out pantera at www.poletricks101.com she is INSANE
