My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
After seeing the length of government incompetance clash directly with the depth of human depravity in New Orleans this week, I was about ready to write off the human race in general.
Until yesterday. My parents in Houston have adopted a 5 year old male tabby cat, Reggie, and a 5 month old beagle, Camila. They were brought into the local shelter, refugees from New Orleans. The local shelters have been inundated with animals brought in from the Katrina disaster.
So if anyone here has been wanting to get a new pet, there are plenty of cats and kittens, dogs and puppies, in Houston. Texas people take note, since have many on these boards. I wanted to spread the word to see if anyone is interested. We can't all adopt families, but we can help out the animals.
New Orleans is, was, my absolute favorite city in the US, and I can't stop breaking down and bawling. My heart feels so heavy with grief. But watching the help efforts all around me, at least I have some hope that it will recover and be able to one day shine again. :'(
Kind regards,
Kat

Kat.. Do you know how far of a drive it would be from Memphis to Houston? I mentioned this is another thread, but I would gladly adopt a couple of those babies. I know that shelters don't generally fly animals for adoptions, but I'd be willing to drive when Hubby can take a few days off.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Memphis to Houston is about 10 hours.
Katrine, I commend your parents!! That's awesome.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Thanks, Amethyst! I'm going to see what we can do. I was reading some of the sites of shelters in Houston, and from what I saw, you need to be a resident with a Houston ID or license to adopt? That cancels us out of that's the case. :(
If we can't adopt from there, I'll make a donation to one of the shelters there by sending a money order or something this week.

This might be to prevent people from trying to adopt animals under the pretense of sending them off for animal testing perhaps?
I definatley wouldn't expect anyone to drive that far to pick up a pet.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
^I can totally understand. But those scumbags ruin it for us who are genuine about wanting to help out. It sucks. Maybe I'll give the SPCA in Houston a call and see if they're allowing other states to actually drive up and adopt. I'll do it in a heartbeat if they'll allow it.
When I was giving my cats away in AZ, I had to deal with a ton of freaky people wanting to take them. There was one who asked if my male was neutered. When I said "No", he said "Oh, that's fine, I'll do it." I said "Who is your vet?" He said "No.. I do it myself." Right, so of course my male didn't go with that guy. One lady wanted both of my cats, for the sole purpose of catching mice because her house was infested. She got hung up on as well.
He did end up going to a couple who lived in Tempe, which was quite a drive to Peoria for them. They were searching for a gray cat with yellow eyes, and couldn't find one. That's what my male was. They drove all that way to come get him. I knew they were good people and he'd have a good home if they would come so far. My other cat went to a farm where she would live outside. It was a perfect place for her because she was an escape artist and hated that I kept her indoors.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
When people have to give away pets, animals advocates warn them to always ask for some money in exchange for adoption, at least $50. That way, scumbags trying to make quick cash re-selling pets to testing labs won't be inclined to front that much money for the animal. Advocates also recommend requesting at least one post-adoption visit to the pet. This is just what I heard...they give pets away for free here all the time. I would love to go get another kitty, but I am not allowed to have more than one here, and no dogs at all. :(

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
some people on craigslist are offering to take in pets for a time period...also, there was a board that had articles from the local southern newspapers that offered people rooms and stuff-- so if you posted on one of them saying you'd be willing to foster or adopt a pet you prob. wouldn't have to drive that far.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Of course, Rhi, you could have Katrine adopt the pets for you if you send her the money...if you really want the pets. Otherwise, send money down so they can buy food and medication for the animals.
Also...on another note...the Red Cross, etc needs lots of money for diapers and medications...don't forget about the pets' humans!! ;)
-
Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Er.. Yeah, I said that if I can't personally adopt them, I'd send money anyway. Kat mentioned that she'd adopt more, but she's only allowed 1 pet. So that option's out.
I'm also not forgetting about people. There are a million threads going on here, and I've already responded with what I'm doing for them, like most everyone else has.
We just want to make sure that furbabies are being taken care of, because they are getting passed over during the evacuations.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Well, what I meant was that you could ask Kat (or any Texan) to adopt the pets that you want and you could drive down by her and pick them up. The only time you'd need to be a Texas resident to adopt the pets would be if you did it directly from the shelter. Since Kat (or any Texan) is a resident, they could adopt for you and then you could just pick them animals up from them. I think that would work, anyways.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Sure! If anyone wants to drive to Houston to pick them up I can adopt them with you. BUT, remember the 10 hour drive. I can't even have a pet here temporarily in Austin (maybe for an hour or two) because my landlord FLIPS! Believe me, I've experienced it when he saw my cat in her pet caddy and though I had adopted a dog against his permission (and the lease).
-
Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
I wouldn't put you in that position, Kat, because it is a 10-hour drive, and I'd hate for you to catch shit for it. I'm still going to contact the shelters, and see if we'd be able to adopt them on our own. If not, I'll be mailing a money order tonight.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
Thank you for letting us know, Katrine. I will pass on the word to NinaDaisy, will be happy to hear that. She's not doing too well right now.
At which shelter and how can people out of state (as far as California or New York) get in touch with the shelter?

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
I was just going to start a thread about about helping the animals today and saw this. I was in tears this morning seeing the people and then on top of all that grief I saw images of dead and stranded animals. People in the Superdome were told they couldn't take their animals with them. I heard that on TV...so what happens to these abandoned pets???? Just left to die! My god where is the humanity in any of this?!?!?!
We immediately jumped online to donate $$$ for the animals too. We are too far away to adopt but YES...please adopt if you can or donate $$$. This is all making me so sad it's unreal.
3 good organizations to donate money for the animals hurt by Katrina:
www.hsus.org
www.americanhumane.org
www.noahs-wish.com
Also yesterday we were at Petco and they are asking people to round up their purchases to help with the effort as well. They are taking donations too:

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
My dad just walked into the shelter in their neighborhood. They live RIGHT off of I-10, so lots of pets are being taken there since I-10 is the main interstate through NOLA, or was, since much of it is destroyed. I'll call them later to get the name and address of the shelter.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
I forgot to list this site before to help:
http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer
They have up to date info as well on what's going on with the rescues and links to the Houston ASCPA where some of the animals are being kept.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
I jsut started crying thinking about having to evacuate and leaving my animals behind :'(
I just made a donation to the Humane Society

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
^ So did I. In fact, I don't think I would leave them behind. They are as much my family as Scorpio and Makayla. I would never leave them.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
I couldn't leave my pets either. I would give them my last bite of food. It's heartbreaking beyond words. :'(

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
I think they had to abandon their animals...you don't see any at the rescue centers.
I was thinking more about it. I would hate to leave my animals behind, but it would be worse to know they would be really scared during the last moments of their life and then drown to death.
I would have to have them euthanized, which I guess isn't really an option, so I would have no choice but to put them down myself. HOW HORRIBLE! The thought made me sick and I'm sorry for sharing it, but I can't stop thinking about how I'd react in such a situation. It's a terrible choice....leave animals to suffer or kill them yourself.

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
The Phoenix would not be left behind. He would latch his claws into my back and hold on at the sight of water.
So I guess those of us who live far away should only donate money to the shelter?

Re: My Parents are Saints (Animal Refugees from NOLA Adopted)
There have been a lot of stories involving animals. Some of the people who didn't leave stayed because they didn't want to leave their pets behind; only to have them taken away in shelters. Many have had to make the agonizing choice to have them euthanized.
I'm already flipping out over this. I can't imagine how much more agonizing it would be if I was still living there and had to make this life-altering decision involving my three cats. My heart especially goes out to the kids who have their pets being taken away. It still hurts when you're an adult, but you don't have the same coping mechanisms when you're a child.

That is wonderful to hear... all we have heard at this end of the world is about looting, rape, and pillage. I spent a very happy month in New Orleans playing piano in 1992 and it was undoubtedly my fav city in the US.
when floods hit Mumbai formerly Bombay, India about a month ago and had a very similar effect of knocking the city out and killing about 500 people, people were doing everything they could to help each other out. I can understand natural disasters and governmental incompetence but I cannot understand the reaction of the masses that has been potrayed across the world ( ie pillage, rape and looting).. its great to hear that there are still a lot of good people around.
