supermodel gia
I have been reading Stephen Fried's book Thing of Beauty, The Tradegy of Supermodel Gia. Has anyone ever read it? It so good I can't put it down. The HBO movie was loosely based on her life story. She was so beautiful. It got made thinking about modeling and dancing. She felt that she was selling herself as a model, people didn't care about what she said or thought, just what her beauty represented. She viewed modeling as a form of prostitution. Dancing we represent a fantasy, just like modeling. I also saw a documentary called the The Self Destruction of Gia a few nights ago. It was so sad. She had it all, and lost everything, and ended up a welfare case, and eventually died of AIDS. It is a really ugly side to modeling. Such an amazing story. I look at a magazine, and think that models are so lucky. I tried to model, and never made it. She felt unfulfilled by her work, and she wasn't happy in her life, she turned to heroin. I understand how dancers could feel unfulfilled and turn to drugs. What are your thoughts?

Re: supermodel gia
I read about Gia in a 1993 Vanity Fair and then got the Stephen Fried book. She was really something else but her problems eclipsed her chance to live a happy life. I thought it wonderful that she was able to bring an ethnic middle-class American sense to fashion. It is truly a tragedy, but in those lifestyles people are quick to give you enough rope to hang yourself. The 1998 movie "Gia" with Angelina Jolie is worth watching, even though it's an abridged version of the book.
One of her last wishes was to show kids that they didn't have to do drugs to escape their problems- in her own words, "Look where it got me."

Re: supermodel gia
I am in my 30's.. I remember being a little girl seeing Gia on the covers of magazines, I also remember hearing about her death. Very sad, However, you are in charge of what you make of your life. There is always ways to change, always ways to overcome things, if you truly want to.
I've seen both movies, and read the book, I believe she was a manic depressive prior to being on drugs. But that's just my opinion.

Wasn't she very close friends with Janice Dickinson? Janice always struck me as one to mess with drugs. I watched "Gia with my mom. Very sad story.

Re: supermodel gia
She was friends w/ Janice Dickenson, I read her book No Lifeguard on Duty, she is quite wild! I love watching her on the Surreal Life, you never what is going to come out of her mouth! I also think that Gia was bipolar. Her counselor actually said he thought that. Maybe prescription drugs could have helped her.
