Shoe making.
I've decided to try shoe making after finding a few helpful sites on the net. Has anyone else had any experience with making shoes? Also I'm having a hard time finding supplies - doesn't matter right now as for trial and errors sake I shall use 2nd hand heels and soles until I know what I'm doing, but if anyone can put me on to a supplyer it would be fab! I can't find shoe cement online anywhere either!!! I shall try asking at a shoe repair shop at some point, but it's too much effort right now to get to one.

Re: Shoe making.
Do you have a workbench vise or can you borrow one? I think that would be a cheap & easy way to mold & set pieces together. Let us know how it goes...pics too if possible.

Re: Shoe making.
HI APS-- I've made shoes for a few years now-- This is the link to a now defunct yahooGroup that I'm a member of-- I've added all of the links there along w/ a book list? somewhere on the site-- Pretty much any website that I know about or book that I own is linked on the site. I have quite a few articles and random notes artound the workshop/computer that I can send once I gather them.

Re: Shoe making.
As far as supplies go I shop at
TAndy Leather Store
Ebay
and if youhave one around you may be able to get supplies form an old time village-- may not be culturally relevant, but we have reenactment villages like from the 18th- 20th century and they are usualy happy to keep old arts crafts and trades alive.
COSPlay designers are good sources and so are Leatherworkers -- bag makers etc.

Re: Shoe making.
I was going to try my hand at shoe making, but it got to be too much mess for my apartment.
I have the Mary Wales Loomis book though, if you'd like to buy it off me ;) . It's a very good resource.

Re: Shoe making.
That book is AWESOME. I found it at the library and photocopied the whole thing. Great resource.

Re: Shoe making.
The MAry Wales Loomis book is pretty good as a primer-- with the downfall being that you don't get much info on making lasts or heels.
Shoes for Free People by David & Inger Runk (doncha love the 70's with the plethora of married craft/author's!!) Unity Press California ISBN 0-913300-44-6 is a great Beginner's book that teaches you in a way that gives more freeedom to individual design/editing --
Gaza Bowen is my shoemaking shero check out her site.

Re: Shoe making.
I was just going to post the Mary Wales Loomis link, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who is aware of it! They used to offer shoemaking classes at the Crafts Students League in New York, but the whole school folded because of lack of funds.
