Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
cervical cancer vaccine story I found. Ive been following this studying for sometime now as I am others. If everything goes well it will be on the market for young women and girls by 2006! Thats soon people. ;D
I just think this is awesome. Many women were tested not having strains 16 or 18 of HPV. Although this isnt a cure for HPV this can help prevent future abnormal paps.
What do you think about this vaccine? Will it be effective in the long run? Would you get it?

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
Freaking good news to me. Saw this on CCN yesterday.
I have HPV. :(
Hope it's a success.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
ok, just to clarify, this is a vaccine for HPV, not cancer.
I was sort of irritated when I saw CNN reporting that there was a "cervical cancer vaccine" being approved. uuuhh.... vaccines work for viruses, not diseases. cancer is a disease.
Although HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer, I thought that they should have reported the information more clearly.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
I was treated for HPV (non-visible internal lesions). My f*ckface ex gave it to me because he liked to screw party hoes with no condoms. I was too young at the time to have gotten it on my own. (Nice intro to men, huh?)
Many strains of HPV disappear on their own, but not all. If you get it, you need to take good care of yourself to increase the likelyhood of the virus going dormant.
I'm so glad this vaccine is being developed. The way teenagers are today, the should make this shot mandatory along with the Back-To-School shopping list.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
I would never get it - I haven't ever had any vaccines and wont ever.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
A customer was telling me about this last night, as his daughter has cervical cancer. I said the same thing as tampadancer never heard of a vacine for diseases. I think though tenagers may get this and think since they are safe against hpv they dont need to use condoms.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
Its my understanding that, condoms are not 100% when used to prevent spreading of the HPV virus. Since I was diagnosed with cervical cancer about 3 years ago. I was checked for HPV, I didn't have it.
But, I wanted to know about the disease. So I contacted the American Cancer Society and researched other avenues. HPV can be spread from the testicles to the outter vaginal area and also from the shaft of the penis ( if not fully covered by a condom).
I did get a couple of female condoms but, I haven't gotten around to using them. Since I've been seeing women lately.
The good news is studies have shown that HPV does go away on its own. The key is not to get reinfected. So obstaining for sex for a while ( a 6 mths. - 1 year ) might be the best option.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
Americanancer Society would be a great source of info. at this point. They have to put up the facts. Also they give out free info.
I would check with them.
HPV can turn into cancer, since cancer itself is not a "disease." This was always my understanding.
Check into it.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
Thanks Pamela for the source of info it was much more helpful to me.
HPV vaccines: Vaccines for preventing and treating cervical cancer are being developed and tested. Some of these vaccines are intended to produce immunity to HPV, so that women who are exposed to these viruses will not develop infections that continue for a long time. Instead, a woman's immune system destroys the virus before an infection becomes fully established.
Other vaccines are intended for women with established HPV infections, to help their immune systems destroy the virus and cure the infection before a cancer develops. Still other vaccines are meant to help women who already have advanced cervical cancer that has recurred or metastasized. These vaccines attempt to produce an immune reaction to the parts of the virus (E6 and E7 proteins) that specifically contribute to the abnormal growth of cervical cancer cells. It is hoped that this immunity will kill the cancer cells or stop them from growing.
Preliminary studies of one vaccine found that it was successful in preventing HPV-16 from causing precancerous changes. Studies are currently in progress to find out whether it actually lowers their risk of developing cervical cancer. Rsearchers are also working on similar vaccines that would protect women against several high risk HPV types (HPV-16, HPV-18, and several others).
-American Cancer Society
So this does protect women against HPV and women who develop it. It helps block the virus or it helps kill the virus BEFORE it can start to spread cancer.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
And the Christian Right is trying to block it.
I kid you not. Their argument is that it will give young women a "license to engage in premarital sex."
Idiots.
Here's one article but there are tons. If you've never gotten involved before, Lord knows this is the issue that should motivate you.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to post this link. This vaccine could save your life.
http://www.gardasil.com/ It is available.
It's currently recommended for:
- all girls ages 11 and 12 (although it can be given as early as 9 years).
- all girls/women ages 13-26 who have not had the vaccine.
- women with abnormal pap smears, genital warts, or certain other conditions.
Bottom line: If you're in any of those recommended groups, urge your health care plan to include it in their coverage. Out of pocket, it's currently $125 per dose, three doses total, but the four types of HPV it protects against are often responsible for non-hereditary forms of cervical cancer.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
Believe it or not, the fundamentalists are protesting the hell out of this vaccine. They don't want girls or women to get this vaccine because they think it will encourage them to have sex. Guess they'd rather watch some women die of cervical cancer so they can scare the others into celibacy. I hate these people.

Goddamn! It's always something. That's probably why they haven't released a cure for HIV. I'm sure they know what it is, but the government just doesn't want us to have it.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
The fundies are why this vaccine is being marketed as for cervical cancer prevention and not HPV. Apparently it flies better to say that this prevents cancer, not genital warts.

It's reccomended before you become sexually active, too. Sigh, I'm 28 and way past being a virgin. I think this vaccine is awesome and I wish I could recieve it.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
I would highly recommend a vaccine against this to anyone. I would get my daugher immunized (if I had one) as soon as possible.
I have a strain of HPV that I picked up wehn I was 19 or 20 years old. Either I got it from my husband at the time I was diagnosed or else I got it from a lover form about 2 years befre that, with whom I had used condoms. I lost half my cervix in a surgery to remove pre-cancerous cells. The virus is still in my body, resident in the nerves on my hands and feet. Most types of soap, lotion, and cleaning chemicals cause me to break out in painful blisters. I have to clean my house and wash my clothes with special porducts, be extremely careful with any thing I apply to my skin, and carry my own hand soap in my purse, as the kind in most public restrooms irritates my skin.
If you are eligible for the vaccine, get it!

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
hey Mia M,
You're not too old to get the vaccine. I'm 28 too and I was vaccinated today. It's reccomended for younger girls, but that doesn't mean that your doctor can't give it to you.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
One of the reasons I moved to australia because one of the professors at the college down the street founded this vaccine!
Mine already developed into cancer, sadly. The cancer was removed and there have been no appearances since (knock on wood) of it reoccuring. The virus itself is gone which makes me happyjoy. Of course it's only gone because it evolved. Niiiice.
I need to thank that guy...

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
So... HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer? Is it transferable through birth?
My mom had cervical cancer... think I need to look this up.
-
Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
Yes, it transfers most commonly into throat cancer of the baby.

:O Throat cancer? That's a bit off the wall!
Are you doing lots better lilithmorrigan? You said it evolved... eh I'm a bit dense tonight!

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
HPV became cervical cancer. There are no traces of HPV left in my body. Actually, currently, there are no traces of cancerous cells left in my body either! *happy dance*
I'm not entirely sure why throat cancer, but I do remember it being that.

Re: Break through: cervical cancer vaccine
I wonder where I can get this in Houston... I'm looking at the Montrose Clinic webpage because I currently have no medical insurance.
