I read that 70% of exotic dancers get follwed home. I was thinking of buying some mace and registering for a gun to keep at my house, up high in a closet or somthing. have any of u been followed home?

I always take a detour and stop at least one spot on my way home. There is usually a gas station on the way so I pay attention to what cars leave behind me wherever I am and same goes for when I stop. I also remove the majority of my makeup and pull my hair up when I leave, so I try to attract the least of amount of attention possible. If you feel the need to get a gun, get a child safety lock too, always keep a can of mace that has the little lock lever in your purse.
I was followed home one night a year ago and I didn't get out of my car, I called the police and he left as soon as he saw their lights coming down my street. If you have a roomate, call them on the way home and have them turn on the lights, come outside to help you with your stuff, whatever it takes to make the follower think that you aren't alone. I have my neighbors # and he has come out before and pretended to be my BF.
Weapons usually end up getting turned on a person so keep that in mind before purchasing one.
Maybe consider a self defense class and remember your gut instinct is always your best safety tool so listen to it.
Keep a cell phone on you at all times and if possible have someone you trust pick you up from work so you do not have to go home alone.
If attacked, go for the eyes. It hurts like hell and the automatic reaction is for them to bring their hands up to the eyes so they end up letting go of you. Which means you can then run. Plus they won't be able to see which gives you that little window to get away.
Unfortunately, I speak from experience on this subject.
if you are followed, drive to the nearest police station, and start honking your horn over and over. try and get a license plate number also.
70%? Where did you read that? It sounds a little too high, but I guess you never know.
I take a different route each time I leave. One is a straight shot down the interstate with LOTS of cops around. Plus, I often go to a friend's after work. I have police mace and a stun gun. A close friend was followed home and the guy showed up at her door one day. :(
wow. I always get really scared when I drive home and my boyfriend isn't home yet. I feel like any car driving down my street is someone who's going to jump out and get me, so I throw everything into my big purse and run with my cell phone and keys in my hand to my door. I'm a big scaredy cat but i could definitely fend off an attacker, plus he police station is a block away.
When I was younger my mom used to work in gogo bars and on 2 occasions she had someone follow her home. She was single and her room window looked right out onto our deck, so the guy was there at her window looking in. The police came ad took him away but I can't even imagine how terrified she must have been seeing him there with two very young sleeping children one room away.
Don't get a handgun (see bowling for columbine) I would advise you to get a stun gun for a number of reasons: they're non-lethal, they can subdue someone really fast and they can't be used on you (they have a disable pin and it won't work without it). You could scare your attacker away by just using it as a warning, its scary looking and its really really loud which will draw a lot of attention.
I bought one for $75 on
I got the 900,000 volts because I heard that if applied to the right spot you can make an attacker release his bowels (pretty cool, huh?). There is a cell phone stun gun that looked really cool.
I would also advise dancers leaving parties and nightclubs is to make sure you have enough gas before you go to work! The place I've heard for guys doing something stupid is at the gas station! I don't why when its a well lit area and there are people everywhere, but I've always heard of guys following dancers and coming up to them at the gas station.
Hell Yea! }:D a stungun would definately be my choice of weapon!!!! }:D
Mace always seemed like a bad idea to me anyway. It's to weak. What if you were accidently down wind when you sprayed it? Besides if the guy is really phsyco and is all drugged up then mace won't even phase him or slow him down. But a stungun!!! :D ........
Things to remember though......even though it is a non-lethal weapon it can kill. i recently read an article about an investigation of numberous deaths of people by cops who alledgedly stunned the person multiple times and the guy's heart couldn't take it. And when there is death.....the situation can turn ugly.
Stunguns are NOT good weapons. You have to get too close to use them. Same with mace, for the same reason. If you think you need a weapon, get a handgun and a concealed carry permit, and learn to get very good at using it.
That said, pepper spray did once save my ass in a Christmas mugging when someone pulled a gun on me in a dark, empty mall parking lot after work. I got away and kept the cash too. But I was 16 and stupid and it could just as easily have gotten bad.
yes .. ive been followed home this past August. It was soo scary! But I know where all the cops are parked or hidden at that hour where I was. So.. I pulled right into the cop zone. BUT..While they were following me on the highway.. i playd it like i wanted to talk to them. (but i really didnt).. so the guys slowed down. As soon as they slowed down, i stepped on my breaks and jumped up on their ass and took down their licence plate, year make and modle of their car too. And I gave it to the cops. The cops got them! And yes I do have guns hidden in my home. I believe its very safe. Depending on your living situation. And I carry mace w/ me at all times. I wish I can carry my gun on me at all times.. but i dont feel like getting arrested!! : D
I think the safest way is to just plan ahead for something like that to happen. Always pay attention to whos following you or what vehicles are normal in your neighborhood. Make friends with your neighbors let them know that you work late into the night so you'd appreciate being able to call them if something seems abnormal.
Its better to be safe and think about what your going to do before it actually happens to you and your too scared and shocked to do anything.
I don't think you need to carry a gun, having one in your house is fine but more than likely if someones followed you, you aren't gonna make it to your gun before they make it to you. Take a self defense class, kick to the groin, then keys in a fist to the eyes when they move to grab themself.
I have been followed a few times. I do a few laps of a block well before I'm near home, most times they know you're "on to them" and leave. Once a regular who turned wierd tried to run me off the road, I rang a friend who called the closest police station and i pulled in there. The dickhead was stupid enough to wait outside so i pointed him out to the coppers who brought him in, got his details and I was able to get a court order against him.
It can be very scary, I always have a pen and paper handy to note down their numberplate also.
A handgun can make you overly secure, and you might also accidently shoot someone who is not malicious, aka triggerhappy. If you have the mace and stungun ready, and someone come from behind, you can backhand zap them with the gun, then mace them. You're not going to overpower them, and a gun takes a lot of strength and position to shoot. Its very easy to press a button on a stun and it fits in your hand. There are also stunners that go a distance with attached wires.
Planning is key, but I would rather NOT have a gun as I personally have a very bad temper and might end up shooting a boyfriend or something, lol, but not really funny.
I agree that prevention is the best course of action.Quote:
I take a different route each time I leave. One is a straight shot down the interstate with LOTS of cops around.
#1- do not establish a routine where you leave the club at the same time, and take the exact same route home, every night. Doing so makes it way too easy for a potential stalker to 'scope you out'. Even if you have no choice but to take one interstate/major highway, make an effort to vary the route from the club to the highway entrance as well as vary the route from the highway exit to your home.
#2- take the time to research every 24 hour business location, both around the club and around your home. If you know where these businesses are located, if you are ever followed it's much less stressful knowing that you can head straight for the nearest 24 hour business and probably shake whoever is 'tailing' you.
#3- IMHO knowing where police stations are is less useful, because while heading to a police station will effectively shake whoever is 'tailing' you it can also potentially lead to some awkward personal questions, a search of your own vehicle/purse, and possible future LE attention being directed towards you or your club. Also, do not assume that police will automatically take your word that you as a 'stripper' are the 'victim', and the stalker as a 'well respected local businessman' is the 'perpetrator'. All sorts of 'stripper stereotype' scenarios could go through the mind of the local cops, including some where you are the 'bad girl' and the stalker is your 'victim' (and which, legally speaking, you'd have a tough time disproving).
#4- I also agree that stun guns, martial arts skills (unless competition level), mace/pepper spray, or any other line of defense which brings you into very close proximity to a would-be assailant represent more additional personal risk than they do additional security.
#5- owning a pistol with sufficient power to actually stop a would-be assailant at a distance DOES represent some real security. However, to be truly effective, you're talking about a calibre 357mag/9mm or larger, which requires a reasonable amount of skill to fire accurately (especially under stress). 'Purse guns' like 32's and 38's are really only good for pissing off the would-be assailant unless you have perfect aim. Also, if you're going to own a pistol, you need to be mentally/psychologically/legally prepared to drop/kill the bastard (as well as taking all the official heat that will follow)- otherwise confronting a would-be assailant with a pistol may only result in your own pistol being turned against you. Plus, in many states, the legal and investigative hoops which must be jumped through to obtain a 'pistol permit' can be prohibitive on several levels (and can also potentially result in LE attention being directed towards yourself or your club).
#6- practically speaking, the two best lines of defense are a cell phone and a fast car !
don't carry a gun or knife!! That's crazy and you wouldn't even want to think about doing something like that..................It's good to carry pepper spray, also as you leave the club always be aware of who might be watching you walk to your car etc...be very aware as you leave the club and proceed on your way home always look to see if someone is following you and even if you make a stop for gas or somewhere to eat etc......just be very careful and aware. If you ever do noticed someone is following you just drive to the police station and go inside and tell them if you need to.
Yes, prevention is key, that being said...
I'm a veteran knife carrier. Only recently did I think about the legal ramifications of shanking a stalker...LOL.....the last two battery incidences I suffered, I would have been arrested straightaway for brandishing a knife (interstate bus trip, you woulda seen me on the news!)
SOOOOOO...Ladies, life is not fair!!!!
My suggestions- the famous Maglite flashlight- can be used to blind an stalker attacker with the beam, bludgeon him and is heavy enough to break limbs. Almost like a police baton. (That is also a good thing to stow under the car seat, a billy club.)
Car Keys- a gouged eye really screws up someone's day. And while they're clawing at their eye, knee 'em in the groin. The windpipe strike is effective too.
A big part of self-defense is preparedness. If you put up a fight or keep fighting, you are more likely to survive.
Often, if they don't know you they don't expect you to fight......so fight.
