the nerve of some people!!!
I went to a club on sat night which will remain nameless! The doorman tells me I would totally fit in and make money at this club, gives me the times to come and audition. I call on the phone and the manager asks me am I comming in this week. I told her yeah, anyway I couldn't make it last week. I call fri nobody answers the phone! I go yesterday and ask for the manager one of the dancers tells me "oh I know she'll hire you, don't worry" she takes me to her and she hardly looks at me and says " were not hiring" and walks away!Come to find out the lady I spoke with last week quit last week and the bitch I spoke to yesterday just came off vacation! So I get my friend to call and ask are they hiring. She calls and the lady tells her only if your exceptional!!!!! WTF, I know I CAN give everygirl I've seen both times I've been to this club a run!!!! Now I heard this club can be funny about how many blk girls they hire.Since the doorman and bouncer thought I'd get hired I thought maybe they were changing!!! I just don't get it. I saw NO high class types that someone would consider exceptional!!!!!!I hate to say its because I'm blk but the custies wanted to get dances from me when I was just visiting the club! WTF
Have any of you every had this BS happen to you?
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
ALL the time. As black women we are harshly discriminated against in many better clubs. I have been told numerous times how beautiful I am, yet have had to pull teeth to get hired in the better big city clubs.Tyra Banks could walk in, look better than most of the white girls, and be given the run around.
Too many middle aged white males running this industry.
I heard an ad on the radio last week in Phoenix from a club with new management saying they had the youngest dancers in town.
Middle aged guys are not all interested in college aged dancers. There has to be a mix age wise, and racially.
Club owners just don't get it.
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
oh....yeah i've been through that bullshit run around dilema before.....Really don't make sense if you ask me!!!!
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
Sometimes it's racism, more often they think most customers aren't interested in black girls so don't want to hire too many. Depending on the area, they may or may not be right. I've always figured it'd be better to give any hottie a chance and if she doesn't make money she won't stick around.
This is also an example of why it's best to go in asap when you get a foot in the door. Never know what'll happen tomorrow with these jerks ::)
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
I'm Latina and my best dancer friends are women of color. I get so angry about this discrimination. Some of the top dancers at my 1st club were black because it was a conservative rich white town and the customers wanted a fantasy girl different from who they married......
It's their loss.
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
Hun I'm sorry this happened to you, but it's not always blacks they are like that to.
Note: When I say this I'm NOT trying to downplay what happened to you, or say I feel your pain or anything. I'm just trying to make you feel a little better, and let you know this biz is not always fair.
I went to a club in East St. Louis in 1995 and filled out an app. I got ready and was walking out to audition when the night shift mgr, says "You might as well turn around and get dressed again, I wouldn't hire you if I was paid to."
You see then I was a litle chunky and my boobs are real, and I had long dark brown hair. I was SOOO not a Barbie Doll. That's all they had there.
Flash forward 10yrs, lol. In Feb of this year I went back there to audition again for shits and giggles. The same mgr is working there and he's all like "You don't even have to audition, just go get ready."
So I did, then I went straight to him and said "Remember me? I tried to audition here before, and you told me you woulsn't hire me if I paid you."
He's all like "Yeah I remember that, I was really mean to you, I was going through a divorce with my ex, and we were fighting about or kid that day, I'm sorry."
I told him, "Well so am I. Just because I wasn't a Barbie Doll them, you wouldn't hire me. And now that I'm closer to that, I won't work here."
So I packed up my stuff and left. I had 6 custys follow me out the door asking what happened. I told them and now they drive (well 4 of them anyway) the 3 1/2 hrs to see me at my home club.
If they don't like you after they said they would hire you; then fuck 'em! Hell girl if you wanna move, lol I know of 3 clubs in this area that would hire you.
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
There's a certain infamous club manager whose rudeness to dancers is widely known (hint- he's on Guam.) He was so rude to me I never came back to ask for a job. I met a black dancer he talked down to also. I'm assuming he must use a Hazing method for his girls.
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
This has happened to me. There is a club here that is known to be racist. Of course, I am mixed..but whatever.
I go in the club and ask the dance manager to audition. She lets me.
They then tell me that they have enough dancers for the club.
I get my friend to go in (who is white) she gets hired.
My then BF calls up and chews them out, telling them they are racist, etc. The dance manager admits she doesn't need 'black girls' in the club...and that I should go elsewhere.
After that, he and his friends boycott the club and don't set foot in there (too bad, they had good food!)
But yeah. That is one reason why I stopped dancing. It's hard for black chics in this state. Good lord, I'm mixed and I have problems. We don't make enough money unless there is something going on on the 'side' (ehm ehm). Black dudes get dances from white chics and don't pay us no mind...
White gals just make more money in this state..I mean, it WAS the seat of the confederacy. :-X
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
^ I am not even an ethnic dancer but when I was in Richmond several years back I was really tan (went through a tanning bed junkie phase) I had problems with customers and a DJ who thought I was latina and got all racist on me.
It was a real shock to me and I thought to myself 'wow how do ethnic women deal with this day in and day out ? I would go batshit crazy on one of those assholes some day'
Much respect and love to all of you who handle this stuff with class and dignity.
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
This is not really racist, but in some Manhattan clubs they don't want to hire you if they find out you're russian.
Re: the nerve of some people!!!
^ it's close enough though. Comes from the same place when you get down to it.
