I am seeking some general info about fire dancing. Are there any ladies out there who have tried it?
Also, I would be willing to pay someone to give me lessons if they are in the Portland area. 8)

I used to handle, eat, and breathe fire, but I never used poi or anything. There are great videos and books on both at:
http://www.dube.com
This company also sells fire-handling equipment.
It is dangerous and I would make every effort to have someone nearby with the safety equipment recommended in the learning materials.
I am learning how to work with poi. I don't know when I'll feel comfortable working with fire, but it is pretty fun just the same. I bought my poi here . I am looking forward to getting good enough to use fire when spinning my poi. It will probably be closer to christmas before I feel ready, though.
There is a dancer who used to work at Dolphin 1 who works with fire. I can't remember her name, but if you ask I'm sure someone will know who you are talking about. Also Check out Dante's on Sunday night. They usually have fire dancers and you can ask around about who might be available to teach.
Then there is Miss Ty Fire. She is in Portland. I think she works at Union Jacks and Dante's. She just works with torches, no poi or staff twirling, but she does do fire breathing (something I would never attempt). I also know that Regean (miss Nude Oregon 2004) is pretty good with fire. Not sure where she is working these days, but you can catch her on the radio every now and again on KUFO (I think).
I hope this is helpful. I think Dancer Wealth has a link on his webpage to a teacher in Vegas. Good luck, and maybe I'll see you at Dante's soon!

I am a professional fire dancer and have been doing it for about 5 years now. If you were in Phoenix I would totally offer you lessons. A really good resource is www.homeofpoi.com. They have articles and lessons and a community which may allow you to hook up with performers in your area who may be willing to teach. In my opinion, the best place to buy supplies is www.flammaaeterna.com. The first thing you have to do is decide which tool you want to work on, there are so many! I do fire poi, fire eating / body contact, palm torches, fire finger and fire fans and would be more than happy to lend advice on any of these tools. The most important thing to keep in mind is "Safety First". This is a dangerous art and must be taken seriously and done responsibly. Never light up without a safety on hand or while intoxicated. If you are interested in performing in public I would recomend looking up your local laws and regulations to see what the rules are to avoid any hassel from the man, in most cases a permit and insurance would be required. I don't say this to dissade you from pursuing it, but just to educate. This is an incredible art and if at all interested I say go for it!! If you have any specific questions just let me know. Just out of curiosity, how did you discover fire dancing?
The first time I saw a fire dancer was at Mallory Square in Key West. Thanks for the help!
You'd better be sure your club is insured for it and has adequate exits.
Yep, I know.
