Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
Posting this for a friend who has done some work both stripping and escorting and is looking to transition to a career outside of the sex industry. She makes great money now, but the job screws with her mind and her spirit in a way that makes her want to do something not connected to sex. Needless to say, she doesn't want to give up the money either though, so she feels like she is trapped.
Any thoughts on jobs/careers outside the industry that pay as well or better than stripping/escorting with minimal training (2 years or less)?
Thanks in advance for all of your thoughts and I hope that all is well with each of you.

My thoughts are that if there were, those would all be full and would have a hell of lot of people in line for them.
Often the hardest part of a sex worker adjusting back to a civilian job, isn't just the less lucrative pay, but the complications of dealing with a rigid work schedule and not being their own boss. Its a little hard for some gals to give up that independence.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
She could always run an escort biz....but you gotta make sure she does it legally...there is a book on amazon that talks about the financial aspect of escorting that can explain how to run it.
It's a cinch. If she used to work with some girls...they can work for her on the 'side' and you can give them a better cut.
If you were indie..it's tougher.
But yeah, it fucks with your mind after a while. You have to be strong.
In the words of Brittney Sky in "Pornstar" -
I don't like it...I can't feel it. I just do it for the money.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
honestly there are a lot of jobs that make better money than dancing, but you are not going to get one without a college education, experiance and you are never going to have the freedom you get in this profession. Tell her to go to college.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
The best advice I can offer for a job outside of dancing is bar tending... go to bar tending school its not a long course I think the max is 6 weeks even shorter depending where you go. The money isnt as good but there are nights where it can be. I know some bars where the bar tenders make a thousend a night... you have to be good you have to be quick and you have to be super friendly. Chances are she wont be lucky enough for a thousend a night(its DAMN hard to do) but it can be good... Also waitressing... its not as good as money as bar tending but it can be good. Shooter girl in a night club... my friend does this and makes $500 - $600 a night once again shes in a busy club and shes a good hustler. Its going to be hard to find something that pays as good or better without college or training. Best of luck to her!

Bank Officer
Website manager
Computer Systems Analyst
Parole Officer
Paralegal assistant
These are some of the best jobs according to careerjournal.com. They are assessed using factors like income, stress, physical demands, outlook, security, and work environment. Dancer is rated as one of the worst jobs. :O I posted these jobs in particular because a 4-year degree is not necessary to obtain them. Mind you, schooling is required, most likely an associates degree.
Perhaps she should try something in sales. She would need to find a way to get her foot in the door. I have no advice how.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
Why would you ask a bunch of strippers what job is better than stripping? Obviously we haven't figured it out!

Hold up...wait a minute.
Going to college is a mistouted remedy.
For instance, I have 5 degrees....and still can't make what I make dancing.
2 are in the medical field..one is a PhD.
So "tell her to go to college" to me is a bunch of crock. Sure, she needs education, but let her get a degree that makes her something...or go to a trade school, where she STILL won't make as much money.
What's better to tell her is this..."Go to Computer school"...where you can make like 60-80k starting out.

"better money than stripping"
Stripping where and for how much? As has been said in a number of threads, how much you make depends on where you are and what you're doing.
I hear something like RN or radiology tech might be good -- they're fast degrees, and they make pretty high amounts of money. Not six figures, but enough to live pretty comfortably. Maybe $3000-5000/month depending on what and where. RN especially pays well, though you *usually* have to get a four-year degree for that, I think there are some 3-year programs AND there are 1-2-year LPN programs allowing you to start the work and then finish your RN from there -- I researched this only briefly though, maybe one of the nurses or nursing students on this board could say more?

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
Web design. She can teach herself (or go to school for it), and if she's any good, she'll have steady work at $40-ish an hour, which is just fine (imo).
This is assuming she has the gumption to learn, and the sales skills to market herself...
It wouldn't be better money, probably, but definitely enough for most people.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
*spews coffee* Steady work? Unfortunately, I know a zillion unemployed web designers . . . and a zillion more underpaid ones. The latter category used to include me. :(

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
Dental Hygenist: 55K a year, accoridng to what I've read. But, very tough to get into school for (according to a dental office mgr. I interviewed with). There is a good recent book out Jobs that require less than 4 yr. degress. I don't know exact title. Not all of them are high paying. The book also discusses many jobs that are "outsource proof" (as much as possible)

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
I think life is kind of like dancing... if you're good at something, market it, but don't work for a boss. I've known girls who make three figures housecleaning, and it was what they were good at and enjoyed. There's also good money to be made (if you can market yourself) in unskilled fields like dog walking, childcare (having a daycare), household managment (yes, this is where someone pays you to run thier house), event planning, etc.
I think people can also make good money doing massage. The school is expensive, depending on where you are, but when you're done you get to charge like $80/hr for massages.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
Exactly how good is our money?
I'd say that the average for a good dancer who works consistently is $300/shift. At 3 shifts/week, working 50 weeks/year, the average should be about $45,000/year. I know a manager at Pizza Hut who earns this. It is good money. But, I would hesistate to call it the most money a woman could earn.
Not every dancer earns 6 figures. I even doubt that many earn $45,000 because many dancers only work on an "as needed" basis. When the bills are due, they'll work. After the bills are paid, they'll take time off. Sadly, I tend to fall in this cycle myself.

sorrow: I'll let you know right now I don't do high-end design, just HTML and graphics -- I make very basic websites which work, look professional, and don't hang up . . . I decided not to take it further around when I started hearing that all my pro web-designer friends were out of work. :) I'll PM you with links to a couple sites I've done.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
I'm about to go into the financial services industry. I also have the education and degree for it though, so its not an unskilled job. I'll let you guys know if its up to par with lucrative stripping earnings after I get my first commission check. Of course, I'll also be getting a steady paycheck and full benefits, but the fat is in the commission, aka SALES. Then we'll see about hanging up those heels for good. ;) Its a VERY competitive industry, but then again, so is exotic dancing.
Locally, there is very little to be made in web design. I worked in the back-end, aka database management for websites, and college kids basically do it for free or internship credit. NOT a money career these days.

I have a 2 year degree in respiratory therapy, and worked full time in that field for a while. After taxes I could earn just about as much as from dancing ... in exchange for being forced to work rotating weekends and holidays, in exchange for being forced to work overtime (sometimes 16 hour days). On the 'fringe benefit' side, I was in a situation where I was exposed to AIDS patient's blood on a daily basis as well as every other disease which lurks in hospitals - I actually contracted TB and had to go through 6 months worth of treatment. Oh, and I almost forgot, at least once every couple of weeks I was called on the carpet by my department head, and put in danger of losing my job, because I contradicted a doctor's orders which would have been detrimental to (or killed) my patient.
Also, don't forget that college tuition is not free, either in time or money. When one goes to compare dancing earnings versus 'straight job' earnings, don't forget to factor in the months/years spent studying for the degree while not earning a paycheck PLUS the future cost of making monthly payments on your student loans. This is a major reason that there is a shortage of doctors in the USA ... by the time they have lost 8 years worth of potential paychecks as a college/medical school student, and by the time they have paid off $100k + in student loans using after-tax money once they do start practicing, they're age 40+ before they can 'break even' versus having become a stockbroker, real estate agent etc. In my own case, when I obtained my RT degree and started practicing I was already about $60,000 in the hole on potential lost income (by not working full time for 2 years while a student), plus about another $10,000 in the hole on student loans.

Re: Better Money Than Stripping Or Escorting
Weird, web design must only be hot up here, because I didn't even go to school for it and I always have design work when I want it.
*shrug*, OK, scratch my suggestion.
