Calling all the light haired black girls!!
I'm black and have black hair and I have been dieing to get that Ciara/Beyonce/Christina Milian look. No matter how many times I dye my hair using a blond mix it just comes out only slightly browner. Can one of you gals please tell me how to acheive that look? I was thinking to get extensions sewed in my hair like have my hair braided to my scalp and then have the hair sewn in, and you know how you have to have the hair around your head sticking out, i was thinking of only dyeing that part and getting hair extensions to match since the rest of my real hair will be braided up anyway. Is there a certain brand of dye or something to use? I really want that color. bleach? i'm desperate but I really don't feel like going to the salon and paying the big bucks to get it done. especially if it is just the edges.
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
First off, STOP dying your hair by yourself. That is what a licensed colorist is for. Secondly, to answer your questions you can go about this 1 of 2 ways.
1. Bleach your hair, then apply color. This is one option but I strongly caution it. Do you relax your hair, or blowdry, flat iron often? Hair is extremely fragile and the more elements you put your hair through, the worse.
2. You could get the weave. Either have your natural hair braided and weave sewn on top, or you could do a stocking cap weave (all of your hair is wrapped, put on a stocking cap, then weave on top of that) which is much healthier then the braiding. Plus, no bumps or lumps!
Here is a site by world renowned stylist Clem Lue Yat. Read up on it.

Please keep in mind, I understand that you don't feel like going to the salon or paying money to get this coloring done. But sometimes it's really in your best interest to leave it to the pros. I'd rather spend some dollars and look like a MILLION, than skimp and look a hot ASS MESS!
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
I've used the bleach from the hair store in the past- I don't remember the volume number, but I think it was the highest available.
I left it on my hair all night, I couldn't sleep because of the burning...my hair got lighter, but not as light as I wanted. I took a chance by not going to a salon because I know my hair can take damage and still look alright and on top of that it was a shorter style anyhow. But bleaching and dyeing are hard on hair, so I agree with Cinnamon about going to a pro.
BTW Cinnamon- how would they get hair onto the cap? Personally I get micro braids- all the length or texture I want with little maintenance. But I love bold colors like red and I can't find that with braiding hair.

Well my hairdresser wrapps your hair, then puts the cap over it. You sit under the dryer to "mold" your hair. Then she does a backstitch technique and it is attached. You can wear the hair up, down, to the side. It's great!
This is my hairdresser! She's such a sweetheart.

Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
Matter o'fact here is her explanation of the webweave/stocking cap.
This technique is a full head weave in which you can leave out
your own hair line to get the off the face effect or you can cover
up all your hair and change your hair color or texture. The Web
weave is also braid-less and undetectable. All track work is split
so it does not give the look of a wig, but a very natural look. It
lasts from 2 ½-6 months and you can swim and shampoo while
wearing it. Time is ½ an hour to 1 hour for preparation, an 1
hour to 1 ½ hours for sewing, and 1/2 an hour to 1 hour for
cutting and styling. The price for this technique is $300.00 up to
$450.00.

Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
girl STOP dying your own hair! your shit is going to be in the sink!!!!!!! Do what Cin is telling you go to the salon!!!!! Color, cutting, weaving leave it to the pros!!!!It's not worth saving money. Treat yourself. Also that beyonceciara color is VERY high maitinance(sp). If your hair gros fast those roots will be blk. Most Celebs are wearing wigs. My girlfriend got that color in her hair at the salon and it still broke off. I also used to wear the stocking caps they helped my hair gro alot! Now I'm natural I just streighten(sp) the edges and part my hair in the middle, then I get my weaves sewn in.
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
this is gonna sound kinda whacked- but i have this "thing" about hair/skin colour/tone ratio. beyonce has it almost exactly perfect!
makes me wish i had that darker skin tone :(
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
I have been using mostly L'Oreal's Super blonde for the last 20 or 25 years, though there are a few other brands that work as good. My hair is in shit condition from bleaching though! If you haven't got dreadlocks be careful!!!
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
i've had experience with bleaching. went blond for about a month. had it proffesionally done. the shit is very damaging (sp) to the hair (even more so than relaxers in my opinion). i no longer have my hair bleached.

Oh, wow, CK, that woman is in the place where I've been to get massages! I was down there just a couple of weeks ago.
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
CK if I was ever in Ohio Id go there for sure. I pay about the same for my hair and would love to try someone elses technique.
I want to go for a lighter look next time which is in January when I take mine out. I do feel like Im wearing a giant wig though. Does it always feel like that or does it depend on the technique. In case you didnt know I went with a weave sewn in kind.
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
I don't care how strong my hair is, I would NEVER dye my hair alone (and my hair can handle anything). I've never coloured it though, too scared I won't be able to get it back to the original. Luckily, my hair colours and highlights naturally over the summer in the sun. If I really want a drastic change, I'll do a weave, microbraids or wig.

Come on out here TM. You know you got a place to stay when you get here ;) See, if it's feeling like a wig then that is a BAD THING. That means it's to heavy for your hair. Could be doing more damage than good. When do you take it out? How long did the stylist say it would last. Shoot, you know I don't want my baby walking around like a hot mess. ;) I'm gonna find you a weave stylist out in your neck of the woods. I'll pm you when I get some results.
Love ya,
CK
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
Youre so sweet CK. :) Awww. She said it would last about 2.5-3 montths. Then I gotta get my hair braided to my dome over again. My braids are really small and she had to put extra hair in the braid to make sure the track would have enough hair to grab onto.
For the thread starter do your research on different techniques for your type of hair too. How long you want it to last. Types of hair. What technique you want. Go to a few consults. Most will charge something small or let you put a deposit down for the service.

Cosigning with the "Don't Dye Your Hair At Home" crowd:
At my hair's longest length (middle of my back), I decided I wanted to go light. I did the home dye thing and over the course of a month, my hair fizzled and broke to about my shoulders! And I used to do my own relaxers! Since then, I've never put any dye on my hair (exception - dyeing it back black).
Anyway, it's better to have someone professional do it IF you have to do it all. Personally, I'd recommend adding light tracks and tracks the same color as your hair and do a highlighted look. My hair is naturally jet black, so when I desire something funky, I'll add a track or two to my hair to liven it up a bit.
Also, some hair extention technitions can do your weave where all of your hair is braided and the tracks are hidden. Go for that if you want all over color!
Christelle, you're in SAT. PM me - I know someone who can help you with your hair at reasonable prices.

Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
I had dyed my hair before and it turned out perfectly, however, I had it done professionally. Being a black female, we already have chemicals in our hair so you cannot bleach your hair with a perm. You would have to grow out your perm and start to get it pressed. The chemicals to do not mix together! Your hair will be on the floor in a couple of days after bleaching. Beyonce has fusion in her hair and gets her hair pressed to blend in with the fusion hair. It is a very technical and expensive procedure. If you are truly serious about making a life change with your hair, I recommend growing your hair out using a "sew-in". Then in a couple of months, cutting off the permed hair and continue with the sew-in until you gain a resonable length. Then get it professionally bleched and use zillions in that hair color and continue getting touch ups in you bleached hair color. Th more you take care of your bleached hair, the longer and more healthier it will become. And its true, blondes do have more fun!!!

Wow you look good for 35.I thought you was 18. But to the point of this message. I wanted to have that beyonce look, but I came out an red head. But in the end, the color cause my hair to have breakages. I had a perm at the time. My length was to the middle of my back. My hair slowly got shorter and shorter. I was also living in hawaii. My point is, If you want to dye your hair a lighter color you might end up damaging your hair. Try getting that strand by strand extention in a lighter color. Or just wear a a lighter color wig .
Re: Calling all the light haired black girls!!
Beyonce also sports, as does Tyra banks (very badly glued at the front onto her forehead on her television show) lacefront wigs. They are very expensive but give a pretty realistic look if done properly.
