She's seven?! Holy shit, lol!
My 6 yr old is overjoyed that's she has 3 presents under the tree right now, lol.
And she will go batshit when she sees the "Santa" present; a spongebob tv/dvd player set.
Lol, not picking Audrey, but damn and I thought I spoiled mine, lol.
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
Be really mean and buy her a book that will teach her how to earn her own money and use it wisely!! http://www.kidsmoney.org/

Hahaha I hear ya on that, girl. We used to stock up on those Walmart Cool Toys every Xmas for the first few years with my 2 oldest. They were ecstatic to get them. I remember one year my Son wanted a Little Tykes pirate ship. It was about $80 by itself, not including the accessories. I went to Walmart and was so excited to find a Cool Toys version with ALL the accessories INCLUDED, for $20! I grabbed it up, and he never knew the difference.
Then of course, we got into the more expensive toys, like the Power Wheels Jeep. That was about $250 by itself. It was downhill from there. My Son was only 3 when he requested that. I did get it, and on Xmas morning, he saw it, and ran the other way. He was deathly afraid of it. So I did what any Mom would do (at least I think they would.. Maybe it's just me.. I'm crazy like that)... I took the jeep outside, hopped in it, and rode around to show him there was nothing to be afraid of.. Hahaha. Man, that thing FLEW! You don't think that 5MPH is fast until you're flying down a hill! I got to have fun for a little while with it, until he took it from me and spoiled my fun. Heh
Delia was easy to please this year.. Just wanted Dora stuff. I went to TarGhetto and cleaned them out pretty much. Heh
My older two.. Oy vey.. I ended up just sending gift cards, because they change their minds so often, ya just can't keep track. At 13 & 11, that's to be expected though.. LOL
Below is me in the jeep that year ('95). I had soooooooo much fun! Heh

^ LOL...Go speed racer! :D
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
LOL That thing rocked, I tell ya!
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
LoL i was like 7 years old I think when they had the powerwheeles jeeps originally out... I BEGGED and PLEADED with my mom for the Barbie one.. I never got it. My dad was downright cruel... the year I begged him for a horse trailor because I was sick of having to pay people to haul my horses to shows he put a note under the tree that sent me on a scavenger hunt that eventually led to outside and sitting in the driveway was one of those dinkie truck/trailor things that you get at the dollar store ::)
Im so glad I dont have kids right now... no way in hell could I afford xmas.
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
Whether or not your kid is subsumed into the conspicious consumption culture that's rampant in this country is entirely within your control.
Kids need boundaries, and they need to have adults help them realize what things are actually worth (and conversely, what things are worthless); establishing the concept of value proposition will serve them well beyond their childhood years.
Two cents.
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
well in theory thats great CO. when you have kids you want them to have things like you did/didnt have. i know what you are saying is great but you arent a parent;) it changes then!
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
Exactly what Velvet said.

I totally 100% understand about this point. How commercials are geared towards children... certain age groups... etc... I used to sit in front of the tv at xmas time and watch commercials and write down what i wanted! lol. The commercials make them feel like they NEED this certain thing... etc... But Id like to say its not in MY control... shes living with her dad this year... so I cant do much about it.
EDIT TO ADD: You also cant help it once they go to school. So and so has a TV in her room.. so and so has a pony.. why dont I have a pony... so and so... and so on.. so they want what the others have. There is absolutely no way to keep from kids whats out there.... unless you lock them in a room and homeschool them and never let them see kids, tv, or human life.
The way I see it I'll spend around $250 on my girl. Does she want a PSP with no games? Or a PS2 game and some other stuff... At this age she still (I hope!) would prefer the latter... but Im thinking in a few years when she understands the value of a dollar and knows that a PSP is expensive so its that and only that... ya know? I think at 7 she would be upset to open just one present... even if it is the PSP...
I just thought her list was totally cute... and of course my parents, her dad, his parents AND I got copies... so were like calling eachother.. did you get her this, how about that? did your mom get her this? it was kinda funny...

My niece had her first birthday in October. Everyone else got her these fancy shmanzy noise making toys that are bound to drive her parents insane. I got her some plain ol' wood blocks. Guess what she ended up playing with most of the day?
I do fine it funny that reflecting upon my childhood, some of my favorite toys (tinker toys, miniature cars, Legos) were often the most simple. They strangely enough just also happened to be the most beneficial for my development, and amongst the cheapest for Mom and Dad to buy.
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
Rhia, you crack me up!!!!
My ten year old is hell bent on Bratz Angelz PS2 game and DC's shoes and a new skateboard.. the shoes alone are $60, new skateboard $75 and the Ps2 game $40.. yeeesh..
What happened to good old fashioned boxes??? My grandparents got a new refridgerator one year and my cousin and I had the best time just with the box.. forget the presents, my grandparents had to PRY us away from the box because all we wanted to do was play in the box.. it was a house, a rocketship, a dungeon, and a cave.. ;D
But, when my daughter was 3 we got matching sit n spins... she was afraid of hers until she saw mommy sittin and spinnin in the kitchen and decided it IS fun to get dizzy and barf. LOL.
Re: The Joys Of Motherhood...
Rofl, Gynger!!!
Darien has one of those, and I got drunk one night and did that too. (She was at a sitters) Hubby laughed his ass off at me when I got off the thing and fell on my butt, that's when I puked.
