Meanwhile, check out Project Gutenberg for a huge selection of free e-books.

I can't imagine a reason why your ebook should have any time lag on it whatsoever other than the downloading process. You should try to contact the people you ordered it from for an explanation. Incidentally, what was the website?
It depends on how the author has it setup. If it's an "amateur hour" type operation, they probably check their email only a few times a week and when they get orders, email out the e-book at that time. This is obviously the cheapest, and yet worst (for customer service) ways to go. Some shopping cart systems like the one we use for our e-books emails the product as an auto-responder once the transaction has gone through. Generally speaking, this is immediate and shouldn't take any longer than a few seconds to reach you. Obviously this system is a bit more expensive to maintain, but the time it saves by doing everything automatically for you MORE than makes up for it. For whatever reason, the e-book you bought was created by someone who decided not to go this route. With modern internet technology the way it is, there's just no reason NOT to go with automation for these things.
