Dancing during break
Ok, so it’s the semester break now and I don’t have to be back to work at campus until the 9th. As always my only holiday plans are a couple of get-to-gathers with friends. So I have lots of free time for a while.
I could use the extra cash, and frankly I could really use the ego boost I always used to get from dancing (yes I know that sounds pathetic, but it’s the holidays, I’m single and I miss being complimented a few dozen times a night.) Besides dancing was usually fun (in the short term anyway). So a couple of weeks of doing it seems like a good idea.
There are a couple of clubs within a reasonable drive that I know I can work at. It has been about 2 years since I was last onstage, but I know I can still get hired and I know I can still hack it. I’m not so worried about that.
My biggest fear is running into one of my students. It wasn’t a big deal when I was a grad student and working as a TA, I laughed it off when it happened. I’m not sure about how things would go now that I’m actually faculty at a college. I have no clue how that would go over.
I really want to go do this, but I’m just nervous. So am I being stupid? What do you think?

Re: Dancing during break
Well, is continuing to be faculty at a college a long term goal of yours?

Re: Dancing during break
yes, though it's unlikely to happen at this one. I've been hunting for a new job for a while now.

Re: Dancing during break
Just tell your students that their professor is your evil twin... "really, I'm the good one" *wink* But be prepared to discuss it and defend it at work, because if a student sees you, they're almost definitely going to tell.

Re: Dancing during break
I say go for it at least a few nights. The extra money can't hurt and in my two years of dancing only 2- 3 times have I ran into someone I know, and even then I was allowed to hide in the back.

Re: Dancing during break
I'm in a similar situation, i was at a wonderful club that a cool girl on this site recruited me to but I stopped working there and I am now at home for the holidays. I really miss dancing but I don't know how I could pull it off living in my parents homeand in my home town.
I went to autozone a few weeks ago and this guy recognized me from way back in middle school! So I would suggest that you take an hour drive to a club far away from your college to avoid running into anyone you may know.
Good luck

Re: Dancing during break
I am a teacher, and would be mortifed if I saw a parent of one of my students, I would suggest going at least on hour away, or maybe to another state, if you have free time why not travel?

Re: Dancing during break
i suggest maybe wearing your hair a diff collor just in case...and go back to the normal color when school starts back up, of course use a different name than your real one...honestly i wouldnt worry about it too much...if you see a student or someone from your faculty just go on a different side of the room...

Re: Dancing during break
You might wear a wig, but you still might be recognized. If your club is large enough for you to avoid someone you know, then things might be in your favor. What are the chances of you running into a student in the few days you'd put in at work? Many many students go home for the holidays if its a state school. Community college.... most will be around with not much to do.
If a student sees you stripping, they WILL tell others and it WILL get around. How would you handle the questions from the students? How would you handle the questions from other faculty members in your department? If you have a workable plan for that, then do it. Stripping is not illegal--only questionable to some.
I've run into a former student of mine and he bought a few dances. It was actually a positive experience, and not so awkward, but we no longer shared a teacher-student relationship. Then again--neither do you since the semester is OVER.
I think the odds are in your favor, especially if you teach at a state school where most have gone home for the holidays.

I remember seeing a show about this same topic on Skinemax one night. :P

Re: Dancing during break
Well, I was told to come on up and apply at one of the clubs, it's about 2 hours from home, so I figure it should be safe.
I may go with the changing my hair color idea. could be fun in and of itself.
thanks for the advice everyone. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Re: Dancing during break
Well I did it.
My feet kind of hurt, it was kind of a slow night, and I do kind of hate the drive...
But boy did I have fun. ;D
The manager and Dj were both very nice to me , I had zero trouble with the other girls and had a really good time dancing.
I'm very glad I did this
(oh and so far student free...)
