Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
I've finally gotten up the nerve to give dancing a shot. This is something I've been thinking about for months. I'm currently in grad school in a major metropolitan city in the Northeast, and I don't have a car. My dilemma is this: there are only 2 strip clubs in the city that won't cost me $50 in cab fares to get to and from. One is a complete dive. I researched it on stripclublist.com and it's one of the worst clubs in the country! I also visited the club, and while everyone was very nice, I witnessed all kinds of extras going on, and I'm not willing to do that (not judging anyone who does, it's just not for me). The other club is a classy, extremely upscale club that I'd LOVE to work at. I've visited several times, and almost every girl who works there is drop-dead gorgeous. I know I have a nice body, and I take great care of myself, but I rate myself maybe a 7-definitely not a 9 or a 10. Would I have a shot in hell of getting hired at such an upscale club without any experience, or should I work at the dive (they've already offered me a job) with the goal of auditioning at the upscale club after I've gained some experience?
I love this website! Thanks everyone!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
I say go for the GOLD... if the upscale one hires you work there... whats wrong with starting at the top? If they dont hire you from lack of experience (altho Im not sure this is the type of experience youre looking for) then work at the "dive", gain experience and after a couple months go back to the nice place and try again.
And if anyone could tell me where I rate on a scale of 1-10 just so I can compare?/:O ...that would be great. Thanks.

I think you should go where you can get hired. Working at the dive your going to deal with a lot of creeps and people grabbing at you and just making you feel like a piece of meat. And honestly this can sour you away. If you can get in at the upscale club I would go for it. Otherwise you might want to bite the bullet and pay the $50 each way in cabs. Some clubs have drivers who will take you back and forth for a flat rate thats usually less then a cab fare. And if you make $300 - $400 a night that $50 wont seem like much at all.
Good luck!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Im not sure where you live or how much is the avg at these clubs... $50 isnt a lot if you make a few hundred but if its an area where girls make avg $100-150 it may not be worth it... only way to find out is to try :)

You're a 10. Seriously.

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Since your new,I would go for the dive bar first. It will give you experience to deal with a-holes,save more $ from cab fare, develop your personal style for a while. Then when you have some $ behind you, quit and go to upscale club. You will probably be a pro at getting dances, because you have survived the a-holes you delt with before. It will be easier too becase you wont have the added stress of paying extra for cab.(because youd have it from the other clubs work)

Skip the dive, most girls underrate themselves. GO for the upscale, dont undersell yourself!!!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Thanks, y'all! Your input has been very helpful.
I've slept on it and I've decided that I'm going to take a couple of weeks to polish my image (haircut and highlights, spray on tan, makeover from a very talented drag queen I know) and also practice dancing (I'm signed up for a pole dancing class). Then I'm going to head over to the upscale club and show them the best I have to offer!
If they don't hire me, then I'll take a cab ride over to the third club I'm considering. I've heard that it's possible to make $300 a night there, so if I can get my hustle down, it would be worth it.
I get depressed every time I think about working at the dive. I know extras go on at many clubs, but this place was so open about it and I get the feeling most customers walk in the front door with the mindset that they're going to get an hj that night. I just don't think I can work there-it would really fuck with my head way too much to be worth it.
And by the way, AudreyLeigh...I saw your photos and you are BEAUTIFUL-definitely a 10!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
hal... I know the dive bar you are talking about and in fact, i worked there for almost 5 years. HOLY SHIT that puts things into perspective.
The thing about that club is that there is no dance hustle. They don't have private dances so you have to hustle drinks. It sucks, I won't lie, but that is why you see so many extras going on. If youre a pretty girl with some dancing skills, you can make pretty good money there. but if the extras gross you out, go over to you-know-where.
If I were in your shoes I would go to work at the dive bar, ride it out and get some experience then when they move across the street and start offering private dances in about a month (hint hint) you will be home free in a beautiful new club with tons of money making potential. I heard from a reliable source that they are seriously cleaning house when they move and getting rid of some of the extras trash.
You'll make the right decision!!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Thanks to everybody who gave me advice! Sorry it's taken so long to give an update, but it's been a tough decision to make!
I ended up working at the "dive", where extras are rampant and overt, for several weeks. I found that I just coudn't hack it psychologically, and constantly trying to keep customers' hands out of my thong and away from my nipples got old really fast. There were some really nice dancers, bartenders, and managers there, but it just wasn't for me.
I did a LOT of research on SW and on stripclublist.com, and I decided to audition at a club that's about a 45 minute drive from where I live. I auditioned yesterday, and I got the job! What a great club! Management seems great, the girls were super nice, and I got a really good vibe from the place. I start Saturday and I'm so excited!

Try to get hired at the upscale club. If they won't hire you, then go to the other club.

I give you a two. Of course two is the number of clydesdales that it would take to keep my from trying to "tag that ass", rofl!!!! (Mind you, I am not that big of a girl, but I would try to put up a fight!!!)

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Go for the better club. You don't want to start at the dive bar, then eventually go over to the upscale. Heck, as soon as you tell those upscale girls you came from that dive bar, you'll be an "extras" girl for sure in their eyes.
Go for the Gold babe!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
I say go for the club you really want to work at. If the other club is "sleazy," you might have a bad experience for your first dancing job. Get your look together and go for it.

im in a similar predicament. Im thinking of going to the dive first while I lose like 10 pounds but reading all this has me thinking that I should just try the upscale places. Theres 3 right near me. Were worth it lol!

I would try the upscale one. I think that your first experience dancing has to be a positive one or you will not last. If your first club is a dirty extras club you will not have a positive experience with strip clubs and will likely burn out really fast and hate stripping.
When I first started I researched all the clubs in the area and auditioned at the most high end clean club I could find. I also thought I might not get hired because all the girls there had killer bodies (which I later found out was just good lighting), but I got hired no problem, so dont doubt yourself! Whats the worst that can happen? If you get rejected you can always come back a few months later and try again.

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Goldi, This is my issue too!!
I'm nervous because my audition is early tomorrow morning (wah....) but I'm going for the gold. There's one upscaleish club in my area and I'm going for it. When I first went to this club that I'm auditioning for tomorrow I was scared off because all of the girls were soooo thin (ribs showing thin) but the last time I went I saw some cottage cheese on one gal's bum so I'm a bit more confident now. Also the manager gave me the good ol' elevator eyes so I'm hoping that if I was too hideous/fat/whatever to hire he wouldn't bother wasting his time having me audition. The other clubs have auditions during the day so if I bomb I can try again elsewhere @[email protected]
My bread and butter this past year has been dancing, not exotic dancing but other stuff (gogo and pole at nightclubs, ballet, jazz, modern, folkloric, pop and lock, all kinds of crap) so I know how to move my body, not so nervous about that as much as nervous in general. I'm just gonna go for it. I know I got stage presence and can entertain.
I think having a positive attitude is the best thing you can have to get you through (well, confidence too but I feel like they go hand in hand). Let's see how I feel tomorrow though, ha!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
I would say it depends on what you guys are talking about when you say "dive" or "sleazy" clubs. If we're talking about places where extras are commonplace, then I would agree to just avoid those and go directly to the more upscale clubs. But, if you can find a smaller, more laid back club that's clean then I highly recommend those places to start out. It can give you time to learn the ropes, get comfortable in the SC environment, and get in shape if you need to, before moving up to the bigger clubs where competition is often more steep and there's less room for error.

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
I'm in Providence so from what I've heard, extras are pretty much unavoidable but there are some clubs that cracking down on it (from what I've heard).
I've visited a few clubs to see where I'd want to work and really, three of them all seemed pretty good to me so I'm not going to be completely bummed if I don't get my first choice.
The fancy one is pretty small compared to some of the other ones... they all seem like they have a buncha girls on shift though.

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
Good luck Gio and Goldi! Let us know how your auditions go. Like Elvia said small clubs can be nice and good places to learn the ropes. I <3 my first dive club. It was pretty shabby looking you had to go through a shady hallway to get to the lap dance room which often freaked out customers but it was strictly a no extras place. I like to alternate between upscale and smaller clubs because I still like their laid back atmosphere. I'd suggest going to all the clubs and seeing where you feel most comfortable. If you like the upscale clubs go for it then!

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
I don't really like the implication in this thread that "dive" automatically equals "extras".
The absolute CLEANEST club in the tri-county area is also the dive-iest (sp?) club I've seen (I know, I used to work there). It was also pretty low contact and overstaffed with bouncers. Ironically, the most "upscale" place in the tri-county area also has the WORST reputation as far as drugs and extras (I've heard some pretty crazy stories about both those things, alongside lots of waxing poetic about how "beautiful" and "classy" it is, though I have never been there before myself).
I know the OP was not conflating the two but I just wanted to put that out there for newbies who might stumble into this thread and get confused.

Re: Should I get my feet wet at a sleazy club to get hired at an upscale club?
^ i completely agree serena! tons of extras go on in upscale clubs, they just happen in a closed door room with a bottle of champagne.
also, i know my club won't even consider a girl without experience. and experience in a major city. and i was dancing for 4 years before my current club and it still took about 6 months to really learn the ropes. at least. part of the reason was i only danced here and there and didn't give lapdances or do VIPs so just stage really. but anyway, point is upscale clubs can be quite difficult not just to get hired at but then to cut it from there. the dancers at these clubs are older because you need to be mature and not make rookie mistakes, there's too much money involved. i would suggest getting experience and learning how to deal with extras happening because you're likely going to have to most places, unfortunately. wish you girls the best!
