The three types of hair extention attachment techniques are track and sew, bonding and fusion. Track and sew is the braiding method you've mentioned, bonding refers to wefts or "tracks" of hair glued to the scalp.
Fusion seems to be a popular and expensive choice right now. It's when individual strands of hair are bonded to strands of your existing hair with a special tool. In my opinion, it's the best looking option. It will last just as long as bonding, most claim much longer, but unless you have the the tool you can't just glue in strands as they start to shed. Upkeep costs may be another deciding factor for you. Good luck!
Re: options for extensions
I get mine attatched with wax. They last about 2-3 months and I just can't use conditioner on the bonds (which are attatched about 1/2-1 inch away from your scalp), and I can only use clear shampoo on the bonds, because anything you can't see through is probably too conditioning, and will make the wax slide out. I've gotten my extensions done this way 3 times already, and I love it. It's a lot cheaper than Great Lengths, and lasts almost the same amount of time that my Great Lengths extensions lasted (those lasted 4 months before they went to shit.) I just pay $160 for each bag of hair (I use 1 1/2 - 2 bags each time) and pay my stylist $100 ($25/hour) to put them in.
Re: options for extensions
Why not use clip in extensions? I am so against fusion or any extensions b/c they totally destroyed my hair. Granted, I wore them for months at a time w/o giving my hair a break, but they are so addictive. I missed my rockstar hair so much that I bought a set of clip ins to use while my hair was growing out. They looked great, stayed in at work, and I could take them out when I got home. I now have long healthy hair to midback that is all mine.
You can find a set of human hair clipins on ebay for much cheaper than most websites. :)
Re: options for extensions
Over the years, I have tried extensions a few times. The last time was this summer. I had her do the wax method. They last a few monthes if you take good care of them and won't damage your hair if you are careful. Anyway, it made me remember why I do not like extensions. Way too high maintainance. No Saunas, No swimming, the whole shampoo and conditioning process just takes too much time. Oh and combing it out and separating the extensions out to prevent matting.
