Am I the only one without talons?
hehe, seriously! I've been dancing in the US for about three months now, and one thing I notice is that everyone seems to have huge inch-long, bright, jeweled acrylic nails. I'm a dancer of the cute, seemingly innocent-and-underage variety ;) , so i see no need for huge nails...but if they're as much of a staple as they seem to be, i'm surprised no one's required me to get them! Curious.
Is it just my club, or is this an everywhere thing?

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
Mine are very short, and I have tiny nails to begin with. I paint them pink or red, or just clear gloss, and keep them smoothly rounded. I don't like having long nails and I have an office job where I type a lot, so I'm just not interested in maintaining talons. I don't think guys mind as long as they're neat and clean.
I have noticed that they like the red nail polish better than the pink, but length isn't an issue for me.

Ligers..Pretty much my favorite animal, half lion half tiger with magical powers.
SWEET~

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I don't wear fake nails. Just so not me, and a pain in the ass when you're trying to type, knit, cook, or put on your own freaking jewelry. They are definitely strippery, but a good manicure (and pedicure) on natural nails is perfectly sufficient.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
i used to just wear my nails natural and got along fine in the clubs...although i know what u mean. just recently i started getting a french tip (not too long as i'm a student and have to type a lot of papers) but i have definatly noticed that i attract more higher class custies. i love how they look and they aren't hard for me to keep up. i think that they help enhance the look of pretty hands but if u look well groomed all the way through then guys will notice, fake nails or not.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I use this stuff that makes my nails look like I have a natural french manicure. http://www.dermstore.com/product_Pro...mula+2_341.htm
I hate the upkeep of fake nails as well as the fact that they ruin your natural nail.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
Fake nails are very strippery. I used to have them b/f I was a stripper. My hands are small, so they look very overpowering. I got sick of the maintanence, and when you lose one , they look like shit. I opt for a manicure now, and I love how it looks, more than the fake nails. I just wish it lasted longer, but you are not locked into the upkeep. I don't think it makes a difference, guys do notice when they are manicured, this one custie always compliments my red nails!!

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
natural, fairly short here.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I have SHORT pink/white acrylics. This is because Im a biter *yuck* I wont bite as long as they have acrylic on them... always the same.. that with red toes. I was thinking about getting the gels that look short and can be nice and short and rounded... and red, to match my toes :) I hate how this new club is SO dark with black lights that my nails glow like I just came away from a nuclear plant... along with green teeth... gross

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
Im kind of embarrased.Mine nails are nots done at all and look pathetic. But I suck at painting my own,so Ill have to raise some cash to get a pro to do them.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I'm a nursing student, so I always had to keep my nails short and unpainted because of cleanliness. I never had a problem with it. I just bought a nail buffer and took care of my cuticles to make things look neat.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
Yeah,I think the overly long nails with the jewels and different colors look tacky.
-
Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I've kept long, fake nails for the past... egads about 12 or 13 years..... I'm a biter, but only with my real nails. Plus, my real nails are SO thin. I love having my claws. They were dubbed the Swiss Army Nails back up in NY. Heh! I use them to scratch backs and scalps. Folks love it! This is what they usually look like:

Is it a prerequisate? No. Not at all. Sure, a lot of girls keep long nails, but not many as long as say, myself. At least not that I see. I see a lot of girls with theirs about half as long as mine.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
when I opened this, I really thought it'd be a thread about cut-throat dancers :)
my finger nails are boring because I don't like spending the time and money maintaining them
-
Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I can't really wear acrylic nails because they make the skin on my hands horribly dry for some reason and my hands look all white and chalky. I also have a hard time washing my hair (stupid, I know) with them and typing. I heard they are bad for your nails anyway. That said, I really haven't noticed a lot of dancers at my club with them. I will sometimes paint my nails nude or gold-ish -- it makes my fingers look longer/more tan.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
Mine are natural, sometimes short sometimes long.
I've had falsies many times but i hate having to organise my life around a broken nail which always ends up being the case because once one is broken i'd insist on having it fixed immediately.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I haven't seen any dancers in Oregon with the really long nails, most of the girls I work with have either short artifical nails, or natural. The picture is what I used to see quite a bit back in the 90's but haven't seen recently.
-
Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I wear my both short and natural with clear polish and fake. If I get them fake I always get a black and white design...that's something I've been doing since high school.
-
Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I don't wear fake nails either. My other job is in a hospital and I couldn't do it with acrylics. Customers sometimes point it out though. They say "Wow, your nails are so short!" like it's strange or something, but yeah, I don't have em.
-
Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I bite mine and never wear fakes...but it does not seem to affect my money
-
Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I think the whole fake nails thing is just a way of showing you are well maintained and that you take care of yourself. I doubt custys give a damn about us having nails or not, lots of times fake nails are more about impresssing other girls than guys.
I always maintained french manicure talons while dancing, and still do. Makes me feel fancy! lol

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
I've been wearing fake nails for a while now (the kind in the box that you buy in a store and glue on yourself). I used to go get my nails done, but that was too high maintenance, and I had to go every week because the paint would chip. So I do it myself now and I love it. I redo the nails every week, and I've only had a nail fall off about 3 times. They stay on really well. If I use nail super glue they usually stay on for 2-3 weeks without falling off, but I usually just use regular nail glue because I like to do a new style every week. It takes me about 10 minutes to sort them out and put them on, so it's a lot faster and cheaper than going to get them done, and the paint never chips.

Re: Am I the only one without talons?
If you are banking with your innocent and 'barely legal' look then don't upgrade to the claws. My advice would be - lots and lots of calcium, a short/medium length and a slick of clear polish/hardener.
I used to have acrylics but they were horrid - and ruined my nails underneath. I just started eating a lot more low-fat dairy products and taking multi-vitamins and I found they grew to the same length I had with acrylics. I had very weak nails to start with -- the calcium made all the difference. (my husband is saying 'i told you so'... all credit to him, he can undo screws with his thumb nails they are that strong! wtf?)
Downside:
Some guys can spot acrylics a mile away and think they are foul (collecting grime/makeup underneath, spawning fungus when you have your hands in water a lot at work - condensation, champagne buckets etc) - the guys who say they don't like the 'fake' look. Oh and if you smash one on stage - it not only looks crap but it kills! especially if it breaks half-way down and causes bleeding under the nail.
Upside:
Other guys can't help fantasizing about having them dug into their skin. I also had a custy say to me once that the nails say everything about a girl. Professionally done nails do add to the whole package.
That said, beautifully kept natural nails can be just as hot.
I noticed that when I danced I wasn't seeing much sun - so the Vitamin D necessary for absorbing calcium was way low - that's why a multi-vit is crucial. I hope this helps in making your decision.
