I was in a similar situation -abusive parents then abusive boyfriend - no one to turn to. Moving home was not an option. Stripping saved my ass.

While I have seen some pretty bad declines, there have also been some really encouraging successes (and I don't just mean in a financial sense here).
It can be a very tough business, but with a strong will, you can make it work to your benefit.
